2nd Day At The 2017 ARML Nationals

Song:  Rio

Group:  Duran Duran

We had to awaken early to eat breakfast at the hotel...
and to then make it to the contest site to meet the rest of the team.

All the teams were present...
and the all important individual round would happen next.

This is the important score which prospective universities look at if you list
having gone to the ARML Nationals as part of your resume.

They are set to begin.

There are proctors at the head of each column...
and they also have some midway down them also.

At the conclusion of each set of two problems...
time is called...
and each competitor must hold his answer sheet up until it is collected by the proctors.

After each paper is collected...
they give out the answers to each of the previous two problems...
and if the competitor had gotten the right answer...
they had him raise his hand.

I watched as Alex raised his hand a total of six times.

This excited me because this would mean that Alex had not only done better at this contest
than he had ever done...but that he had a score which is counted by top universities...
as universities don't count scores below a five.

After the individual round...
I had Alex change his shirt to the team shirt for the day...
and he then went in for team relay contest.

After lunch...
and after the problems were graded and tabulated across the US for placement...
The San Francisco Bay Area team had...
once again...
won first place in the ARML Nationals.

The International winner was...
once again...
China.

Macau had taken second place.

While NNV had done okay this year as a team...
we knew that...
as this year's team consisted of many new and young members...
that although their placement would suffer...
they would gain valuable experience for future competitions.

Two years ago...
they had gotten sixth place in the nation in their division.

This year...
the team hadn't done so well as before.

But...
this was to be expected.

They will be getting stronger in the years to come.

The Macau team had asked the NNV team to pose for a picture...
as both teams had formed another team with each teams' alternates.

Alex is standing in the rear on the left.

Then...
the coach had to retrieve the official individual scores...
and the medals for the team's high scores.

Alex and two other of his teammates had tied for highest individual scorer for their team.

By achieving a score of six...
each one placed in the top 85 - 90th percentile of all the thousands of ARML competitors...
at all four locations...Nationally.

This was a big day for Alex.

The medal reads:

American Regions Mathematical League
ARML Team High Scorer

Alex now has an ARML score which is high enough
to be included in his university resumes this Autumn.

Alex was very proud to have done so well on his individual score.

We were very happy for him...
and he was happy with himself...
as well he should be.

Alex had done such a tremendous job all this past year...
and this was the cherry on top.

We would go to the Bellagio for their seafood buffet later on this night...
and to watch their water show...
to celebrate Alex's very fine display of his mathematical talents.

I will be going into our visit to the Las Vegas strip...
in my next article.

  2. Thank you. It made our whole trip out here a pleasure. We are now getting ready to go to a Shabu Shabu restaurant for lunch and then on to Caltech for the tour of the university.
