2017 Academic Olympics Finals

Song:  Zero To Sixty In Five

Group:  Pablo Cruise

Today was the Finals for the 2017 Academic Olympics.

It was held at a local high school.

Only the top three teams from the semi-finals had advanced to this point.

We had arrived early and waited outside for a little while.

These were the school trophies.

Just by making it to the finals...
the lowest a school could get would be third place.

I was anxious as the first heat would be Northstar against a team
they had previously lost to...by one question.

Northstar took the stage.

The opposing team then took the stage
(The expensive private school)...
and the competition began.

Whichever team lost this heat...
would be in third place.

The team which won this heat...
would go on to try for first place...
or would end up in second place.

Luckily...
a math question was read.

Alex quickly buzzed in for the correct answer.

It was then half-time.

The scores were too close for comfort at this point...
although, I believe Northstar was ahead.

Northstar continued to go strong...

for the win!

Just before the next heat...
Northstar had a team get together.

It was then time for the next heat.

This team was exceptionally strong.

They were undefeated.

At half-time...
the Northstar coach switched out one of the team members.

Although Northstar had put on a good showing...
the other team was just too strong.

And so...
the opposing team had taken first place.

Northstar had taken second place.

The final heat was a fun competition of some of the coaches of the teams...
against some of the support staff of the competition.

The coaches were teachers of various subjects from three different high schools.

The one on the left was a teacher of Physics.

The woman was a Chemistry teacher.

The middle teacher...I am unsure of what he taught...
however, he was from the first place team.

The second from the right side is Northstars coach...
and he teaches Math.

The man on the right side teaches English at the host high school.

The support staff (the ones who ran the contest)...
were ready to go.

They were varied in their professions...
but there were a few teachers in this group.

It was actually close for a while.

The woman Chemistry teacher had one embarrassing moment.

She had missed a Chemistry question  :)

However, in all fairness...
she had buzzed in before the question was fully read...
and so, had misunderstood the question.

Once they had finished reading the question...
and had described the atomic structure of the chemical in question...
she had realized her mistake...too late  :)

It was a fun heat...
and I am pretty sure the coaches had won.

This is a picture of all of the coaches of the Finals teams.

This is a picture of the Third Place high school team.

This is Northstar with their Second Place Trophy.

The announcer had given them kudos...
as they are but a very small online school...
and they had defeated many much larger high schools to get to the Finals.

This is the First Place team.

They had gone undefeated.

They were truly deserving of their placement.

The high school culinary arts class had made dinner for the participants, coaches, and the parents.

This was Northstar's Second Place Trophy.

The Northstar team eating.

We didn't have any food...
as we were going out to eat shortly thereafter.

Alex with the Northstar coach.

The staff at Northstar are very proud of their trophy.

This is Northstar's first Trophy.

We departed and drove to one of Alex's favorite restaurants...
Naan and Kabab.

Alex picked his favorite dish...
Salmon Kabab.

I had gotten my favorite...
Kabab Koobideh.

Although Alex loved his meal...
he could only eat half of it...
as he is still experiencing the after effects of the stomach flu.

-------------

Tomorrow morning...
Alex and I will be touring Elon Musk's newest factory just outside of Reno...
The Gigafactory.

This one plant will be adding over 6,000 jobs to our area.

I am almost certain no photos will be allowed inside.

However, I will be taking pictures of it from the outside.

------------------

Alex is now just relaxing.

Although most of the competitions are over...
Alex must now study for the midterms...
and he has to continually study for the AP exams coming at the end of the year...
so he won't become overwhelmed during finals.

Alex is also still doing very well at his university class.

--------------------

Alex has decided that he will not graduate a year early.

He is only 16 years old...
and he has much to prepare for in life.

He will instead...
continue to take advanced classes at the university...
and he will attempt to get other interesting classes at Northstar.

Should Alex graduate early...
he would miss out on more competitions...
and the possibility of receiving some scholarships.

Right now...
Alex is in the running for becoming a National Merit Scholar.

He believes he will be a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist
for the State of Nevada...
and hopefully...beyond.

However...
he won't know if he made the cut until September.

Also...
as the application deadline for this year's universities passed half a year ago...
he would have nothing to do but to take all of his classes at UNR and Mountain College.

Alex decided to use next year to more thoroughly prepare himself for university.

Alex is planning to take an advanced English class at either UNR or Mountain College
this summer.  He also wishes to work at a private math school over the summer
to gather valuable work experience so he may put it in his resume
for the many university applications he will be submitting this October.

  1. Impressive performance by Northstar to achieve second place. And it was nice that they looked like they were all having fun all season.

  2. Everyone had a great time...and...they have a lot more confidence in themselves. This was a big feather in Northstar's cap. You can bet they will be showing all prospective students this trophy.
