Second Week - 2017 Academic Olympics

Song:  Right Down The Line

Artist:  Gerry Rafferty

The second week of the 2017 Academic Olympics
consisted of four heats.

In the first heat...
the opposing team was good...
but they quickly fell behind Northstar.

Yes...
the young man with the full beard...
is a student!

This was half time, and as their team had a full eight members...
the coach swapped out the whole team during half time.

This was Northstar's half time...
and as Northstar only had five members...
the coach swapped out one member.

In the end...
the opposing team could not catch up...
and it was Northstar for the win.

This particular question was a math problem...
and as Alex is the math man for Northstar...
 he quickly answered correctly.

This was the second heat.

This was another math question...
and again, Alex was the first to buzz in, and he had answered it correctly

Northstar had again won the heat.

During the heat...
there was an irregularity in one of the answers given by the opposing team...
and to the opposing coach's credit...
she had brought it up and set the record straight.

It was good to see honor being held to a high standard.

This was the third heat.

This was a tough team.
They had a good team of STEM students.
They were from an expensive private high school.

Another math question that Alex had gotten first...and had answered correctly.

The teams were tied until the very last question...
which the opposing team had gotten.

They had won fairly and squarely.

 For the last heat...
the opposing team had to forfeit...
as they were from Lake Tahoe...
and there was a storm in progress there...
so they could not make the drive to the competition.

So...
Northstar just played against themselves.

One of the questions was a math problem
which Alex had correctly answered.

After the end of the heat...
the moderator had asked Alex to explain the answer...
as she only had the answer sheet, but not an explanation of how it was solved.

Alex then explained it to her.

It had something to do with a base 9 problem.

So...
for the day...
Northstar had accumulated three wins...and one loss.

3 - 1

So far...
the win to loss ratio for Northstar is 5 - 3.

Five wins...and three losses.

Next week, the competition shall get tougher.

-------------

The Academic Olympics second week was yesterday.

Alex is presently at the Davidson Academy taking a very important math test.

I will have to leave in a few minutes to pick him up.

So far...
Alex is doing very well in everything.

Hopefully...
some good news shall arrive within the next month or so...
as to how previously completed work had turned out.

  1. In the photos where Alex is answering the math questions, it looks like his teammates know that they can just sit back and not stress as Alex will handle it, haha. Looks like he's enjoying the competition... is Alex more relaxed going into this one knowing that it may be more for 'fun' and less competitive for him personally than the math competitions he participates in?

Looks like he is finally over the stomach flu... he looks good in these photos.

  2. Yes, as soon as they learn it is a math problem, Alex's teammates sit back and let him handle it. They love to see the reactions of the opposing team when they first learn of Alex's speed and accuracy in math. Alex enjoys these competitions and they do seem to be more fun for him. You are probably right, although the competition is high in these contests, it is not nearly so high stress as are his math competitions.

Although Alex is feeling better, he still has bouts of nausea from time to time. I still don't feel fully well.
