Alex's Music Appreciation Essay - II

Album:  Dark Side Of The Moon

Group:  Pink Floyd

Alex completed this essay in about 2 hours.

It was predicated on the premise that if he had only 5 choices of music
to accompany him to a deserted island...which they would be...and why.

He had researched much of this music on Amazon and on YouTube.

There are other pieces of music...
and groups from the greatest era of Rock...
the 60s and 70s...
and from which I would like to expose Alex to the likes of:

The Rolling Stones

Led Zeppelin

Deep Purple

for their hard driving beats and rhythms.

The Moody Blues

for their incorporation of full orchestras and beautiful melodies.

Robin Trower

for the most mixing in of Blues and Rock...
giving it an otherworldly sound.

 Journey
(old Journey - Look Into The Future)

Their song - Look Into The Future...
is still one of my favorite songs of all time.

I am so glad Alex appreciated Pink Floyd...
as this single group is still in a league of its own.

The one and only...
David Gilmore...
for his ability to truly make his guitar SING
like no other has ever been able to...
he is a true guitar god.

He is the lead guitarist and lead singer of Pink Floyd...
the greatest Progressive Rock group of all time...
nay...
the single greatest band the world has ever heard or seen.

For anyone wishing to truly experience the essence of Pink Floyd...

these albums are a must:

Meddle

Dark Side Of The Moon

Wish You Were Here

The Wall

A Momentary Lapse Of Reason

And for Anthologies:

Delicate Sound Of Thunder

For their best live concert (video)

Pulse

For anyone who has read my blog from the beginning...
and listened to the music provided from about article 100 or so...
you will have gained modern music appreciation.

Addendum 06/30/16:

Alex just received his essay back from his college professor today:

Alex also received an A in the course.

A Father's Day Card From Alex - 2016

Song:  Illumination

Group:  Secret Garden

You may have a tremendous life without having raised children.

However...
you will never experience true magic in your life...
until you do.

To all young couples wanting to have children...
wait until you are monetarily and emotionally stable enough to guarantee
your children's happiness and welfare.

They are not there to make you happy.

You are there to guide them and to make them happy.

Their happiness is what makes you happy.

It is my son's purity of heart which I love the most about him.

I will take a pure heart over any other human attribute...
every time.

A sacred bond between parent and child can only be formed
if you are there...
in heart, mind, and body.

This is earned...
through careful guidance throughout their young lives.

My life had only become magical once my son was born
and had come into my life.

This is the reward of having been a true parent...
a magical life...
for your child...
and so, for you.

Alex's Book Review / Korean BBQ

Song:  Comfortably Numb

Group:  Pink Floyd

This is a tremendous book.
All high school students should read this.

Alex read it almost 6 months ago.

I have only just started it...
but right away...
I had found it so deeply interesting.

I am sure it will become one of my favorite books.

Anyway...
yesterday, when Alex told me about this book...
I not only said I would read it...
but I wanted Alex to write a review of it.

At first...
Alex was hesitant to write a review on this book as he was still doing
his homework from his college and university summer classes.

However...
I know how quickly Alex can put together his thoughts...
and I also know how well he remembers things.

I told him there was no rush...
that he could just finish it over this weekend.

Well...
just a while later that night...
Alex had typed this up and had submitted it to me.

He had completed this assignment from me in 30 minutes...
right after he completed his homework.

I do this every so often to not only improve Alex's reading and writing skills...
but to let him know how well he can write.

To be able to write a book review on something which had been read
six months prior...is a great confidence builder.

A child who can write an impromptu paper in 30 minutes...
on something which he had not been expecting to have to write on...
teaches him to read deeply from the beginning.

A skimmer cannot do this...
only a true reader who soaks up the thoughts of the author can do this.

This is Alex's impromptu book review.

I had picked this song because after eating my fill at this Korean BBQ...
I had felt comfortably numb.

I was so satisfied (and so full :)...
I felt so light and so, so...sleepy.

After eating lunch here today (almost two hours of bliss)...
as soon as we got home...
I took a peaceful nap of over 3 hours.

This Korean BBQ just opened last week...just a few miles from home.

FINALLY!!!

True Korean Bulgogi!

What a great feast we had here.

It is all you can eat...
all the Bulgogi...
all the other types of meats...
including shrimp.

Their lunch runs from 11 AM till 4 PM everyday...
and it is under $20.00...
for ALL YOU CAN EAT!!!

I just kept ordering plate after plate of Bulgogi meat and shrimp.

This seafood tofu soup was some of the tastiest of soups I have had in my life.

I had two bowls of the soup...4 bowls of the rice...
and so many orders of meats to cook right before me...
that I just lost count.

I was in heaven!

Alex also loved the Bulgogi and the shrimp.

Each meat was spiced so well.

You can see the shrimp shell dish in this picture.

We just kept ordering and eating and ordering and eating...
we spent almost two hours just ordering plate after plate...
and eating as if it were Thanksgiving.

I really don't know how they make any money on their meals.

I know they must have lost money on us  :)

We now have a special place to go
to enjoy a long and leisurely meal
 where Alex enjoys everything.

Alex is doing so well in everything.

He deserves a place like this.

Whenever Alex wants to go to this restaurant for lunch...
we shall go.

Alex's Yoke Walk Update - 160 lbs

Song:  Enter Sandman

Group:  Metallica

Alex was using 160 lbs. for his 1/4 mile Yoke Walk tonight...
but it was too light for him.

Starting next week...
he will be doing the Yoke Walk with 180 lbs.

Before the end of summer...
he should be walking with 220 lbs (100 kilos) on his back for 1/4 mile.

Alex putting the Yoke back in the garage after his walk.

I will have him keep progressing in the Yoke Walk...
and in the Farmer's Walk.

I will then add back in weight training when his body has adapted to
twice weekly YW and once weekly FW.

I have to build his overall body strength and recuperative capability
before I have him add in the weight training again.

This will prevent injury...
and prevent strength stagnation...
as with what normally happens using just weights.

The Yoke Walk and Farmer's Walk
will make his whole body a pillar of strength.

His whole support structure
(Skeletal / Tendonal / Ligamental)...
will be much stronger.

His overall musculature is growing much stronger...
and each is much more highly adaptable to pure strength training
as a result of this type of training.

When Alex starts to carry really heavy weights (at least 2x body weight)...
his conditioning level will really skyrocket.

Until then...
we will have to slowly and steadily progress...
all the while looking forward to what is to come.

(You can only walk through the gates of heaven...
by first walking through the gates of hell).

Alex's Music Appreciation Essay I

Song:  Black Orpheus

Artists:  (Bass Flute) Sergio Barrenechea

(Guitar) Richard Miller

Yesterday...
right after I had picked up Alex from UNR...
I took him to his music appreciation class at Mountain College.

His mother also wanted to go along on this day...
as she wanted to take pictures of Alex as he ate his lunch before his class.

Alex's mother had made him clam stuffed rice balls...
and chicken fingers.

This is Alex's view as he eats his lunch.

Alex was assigned an essay to be completed in a few days...
in his Music Appreciation class.

He finished it in about one hour later on this day...
once he got home.

Alex really enjoys this class.

He put in the turn in date on this paper...
even though he had finished it yesterday.

-------------------

It is funny...
his mother likes David Bowie...
I love Pink Floyd...
but I don't know where he had gotten Queen  :)

--------------------

Addendum 6/22/16:

Alex got his graded paper back from his Music Appreciation professor
a week later.

This was his college professor's comment:

Alex was so proud.

Although Alex has been going to University for two years now...
all of his previous classes were for advanced math.

This Music Appreciation class is Alex's first college class
which is not math related.

Alex now realizes that he can do well in all university level classes...
and not just in math.

Alex At The 2016 ARML Nationals - II

Song:  O Grande Amor

Artist:  Zhang Zhi Yong

The next day...
the testing started at 9 AM and the awards ceremony started at about 3 PM.

There were approximately 550 competitors.

At the conclusion of the competition...
the team went back to the dorm to pack up...
and then eat lunch before they went back to the ballroom for the award ceremony.

For the International Division:

1st place:  China

2nd Place:  Macau

3rd Place:  Vietnam

For the National Division:

1st Place:  San Francisco Bay Area

Some of the greatest young mathematicians in the Nation
consistently come from the San Francisco Bay Area.

A special mention goes to Las Vegas.

This year, they made their own team...
and in the B Division...
they placed 4th in the Nation.

They did a tremendous job.

This year...
NNV Math Club was placed in the A Division.

It was a learning year for this team...
as they had lost so many of their senior members.

After the contest...
Alex was talking with a representative of Mathleague.

They are looking for professional problem designers.

Alex wants to design some problems for some major math competitions.

After we left UNLV...
we went out to eat at an all you can eat sushi place.

We then went back to the hotel for a last good night's sleep.

The next day...
it was 111 degrees F.

We ate lunch at an all day Dim Sum restaurant.

We ate our fill.

Alex rested as I paid the bill.

Near Death Valley...
we stopped in at a candy store so we could get cold drinks.

We are just a couple of hours away from home here.

After arriving at home...
Alex and I went out to eat at a Mexican restaurant.

Alex had a good time...
and he is now going to his university and college summer classes.

Alex is growing up so quickly.

In another month...
Alex will begin to learn how to drive.
