Alex's Mountain Journey - Virginia City I

Song:  Home Sweet Home

Group:  Motley Crue

For this week's long drive for Alex...
I had chosen Virginia City.

Although it only took us about 45 minutes to get there...
it is on a very winding mountain route.

Part of Alex driving lessons is the planning of the trip.

On the night before our journey...
Alex looked up things to do...
and places to eat...
and he reviewed the route there and back on Goggle Maps.

The highway leading to Virginia City is actually the same highway
as the one leading to Mt. Rose...and to Lake Tahoe...
only we just go the other way on the highway (besides the number change 431 to 341).

This is the highway as it leads up the mountains leading to Virginia City.

Virginia City

Virginia City was once the richest place on earth at the time.

It was the site of the Comstock Lode...
the richest strike of silver in history
(there were also gold mines here).

I love the air up here.

For me...
the higher the altitude...
the better.

All this weekend there were camel and ostrich races going on just out of the town proper.

After the races...
they walked the camels down the main street.

Mark Twain once worked in this building.

We went in and spent a while downstairs in the Mark Twain Museum.

It was not only very interesting...
since it was in a deep basement...
it was very cool...temperature wise.

Alex loves underground areas.

Alex had a great time in this museum.

As the entrance fee was only $5.00...
it is a must see for anyone going to Virginia City.

In the next article...
I will cover more of the city...
as well as the great restaurant where we had eaten.
