Alex's Long Drive To Ripon, CA

Song:  Into Dust

Artist:  Mazzy Star

Yesterday...
Alex had driven over 415 miles
over a period of over 8 driving hours...
from our home in Reno, NV...
to our old home in Ripon, CA...
and back.

We departed home at 2 PM...
and had gotten back near midnight.

Our trip was nostalgic for all of us.

Alex had done very well in passing slower cars...
and then merging back to the slow lane.

Just beyond this highway exit...
was all new territory for Alex.

We made our way over the summit...

and all the rest was downhill until the Sacramento plains area.

We made our way through Sacramento...

and on into Ripon.

Ripon was a sleepy little town of 10,000 when we first moved there.

It was an oasis built in a sea of almond orchards.

This was our old house.

Alex lived here from 3 months old...
until he was almost 11 years old.

We stopped in our old neighborhood park.

We then drove to another neighborhood park at which Alex also loved playing.

We then drove to Alex's old elementary school.

The blue cougar paws led the kindergarteners to the cafeteria.

This was Alex's Kindergarten class.

I had posed for a picture in front of this classroom with Alex on my knee...
on his first day of Kindergarten.

We soon left his old school...
and Alex drove to Modesto (a neighboring city)...
so we could eat at a restaurant that was one of our old favorites.

El Rosal...
an excellent Mexican restaurant.

Alex tried the shrimp fajitas...
and I had a four item combo plate.

We then drove a little ways to where Alex was born...

Modesto Memorial Hospital.

We then got back on the highway...
and made our way North.

We fueled up in Ripon...
and continued North to Sacramento.

Near Sacramento...
the traffic had slowed down to almost a crawl.

Fire trucks had blocked the left lane...

and they were putting out a fire which had started in the median.

It was almost out here.

I had initially seen it almost a mile back.
The flames seemed to have risen 30 - 40 feet in the air.

We soon hooked into highway 80...
and made our way over the Sierra Nevadas.

About one hour from home...
Alex stopped in at a rest stop so we could use the bathroom and stretch our legs.

We are getting ready to leave the rest stop.

In Reno...
it was almost midnight...
yet, I was strangely hungry.

I had Alex pull into a Jack in the Box so I could get a burger.

This was Alex's first time to drive through... a drive through.

Alex had gotten some valuable experience on his long drive.

He now knows he can drive long distance...
and how his body reacts when doing so.

Now, most of our long drives for the weekends will be substantially shorter.

For the rest of this driving week...
Alex will be practicing his highway merging.

  1. You've come up with great ideas for the longer drives. Besides being great opportunities for Alex to practice his driving, it gives you an opportunity to visit interesting places. It must have been very "natsukashii" to see your old neighborhood. Was it as nostalgic for Alex as it was for you?

  2. Yes, Alex has very warm memories of Ripon. It was so good to revisit our old area. When we first moved here, Alex was sad. However, we have had so many good memories made here that he is also glad we moved to Reno.
