A Senior Math Club Member's 4 Hour Proof Class

Song:  Shout

Group:  Tears For Fears

A neighborhood library room served as this day's classroom.

The young man on the left was today's teacher of the 4 hour long Mathematical Proof class.

He is the most senior NNV math club member and this is probably his last class.

He had regularly taught lessons to the rest of the math club over the years.

He was accepted into one of the world's top colleges for math...
and he is starting there in three weeks.

There were three new and young members at the class today...
but all have had some experience with mathematical proofs.

These were the last four proof problems of the day.

The first problem's solution was demonstrated by the female participant.

The second solution was given by the second from the left participant in the class photo above.

And Alex had given his proof for the third problem.

As they had run out of time...
they never got to the fourth problem.

This is the senior NNV Math Club member.

I believe his goal is to become a math professor at a university.

He will certainly become a great one.

He not only has the knowledge...
and knows how to effectively transfer that knowledge to others...
but he has a very open and understanding personality...
so his students won't become intimidated...
and so, their minds shall remain open and will feel free to explore and expand.

After the female member posted and explained her proof above...
the youngest member told of a different way to prove it...
and...

the instructor had also shown another way...
but he had explained that the female member's way was the most complete.

The second person then got up and had explained his proof to the class...
and he had also done very well.

Then Alex got up to explain his proof.

The instructor had said that Alex's proof was perfect...
with the exception of him not having written out his initial hypothesis
(Alex had merely stated it verbally without having written it down).

The instructor then wrote out in green...
the Inductive Hypothesis.

And...
this was the complete proof.

As Alex does so much in his head...
and so many things are self evident to him...
he often forgets to write down everything so that he may show others.

-------------------

The young man who was this day's instructor has...
for years, been a leading instructor for the whole math club.

He had really helped young children understand math...
especially when it had come to mathematical proofs.

He was the one from whom Alex had learned so much when Alex had first
started the math club...when he was in the 7th grade.

This young man never tried to lord over the other children
because of his superior knowledge...
but rather, he led the others to understanding through his superior knowledge.

I have always been highly impressed with this young man...
not only because of his obvious very high intellect and mathematical capabilities...
but he has always conducted himself with such professionalism...
and he clearly demonstrated to all of the other children...
what it means to be a true gentleman...
and even more so...
a true teacher.

  1. How wonderful for all the members to have had an opportunity to learn from this young man over the past few years. Hopefully Alex and the other students have learned not just math from this senior, but also how to teach and encourage others.

  2. This young man has exceptional teaching capabilities. When Alex was in the 6th grade, this young man was in the 8th grade, and had gone to the Mathcounts Nationals. Alex was so impressed with his performance that he also wanted to go to the Nationals, and in the 8th grade, Alex also did. He has been a natural leader for the club. Alex also wants to be able to help teach the others in the math club...especially since so many of the older children are going to university now.

  3. This is what I call a true teacher.

I hope Alex does fulfil his teaching dreams.

There will be lots of roofs for proofs!
