Alex At The 2016 ARML Nationals - II

Song:  O Grande Amor

Artist:  Zhang Zhi Yong

The next day...
the testing started at 9 AM and the awards ceremony started at about 3 PM.

There were approximately 550 competitors.

At the conclusion of the competition...
the team went back to the dorm to pack up...
and then eat lunch before they went back to the ballroom for the award ceremony.

For the International Division:

1st place:  China

2nd Place:  Macau

3rd Place:  Vietnam

For the National Division:

1st Place:  San Francisco Bay Area

Some of the greatest young mathematicians in the Nation
consistently come from the San Francisco Bay Area.

A special mention goes to Las Vegas.

This year, they made their own team...
and in the B Division...
they placed 4th in the Nation.

They did a tremendous job.

This year...
NNV Math Club was placed in the A Division.

It was a learning year for this team...
as they had lost so many of their senior members.

After the contest...
Alex was talking with a representative of Mathleague.

They are looking for professional problem designers.

Alex wants to design some problems for some major math competitions.

After we left UNLV...
we went out to eat at an all you can eat sushi place.

We then went back to the hotel for a last good night's sleep.

The next day...
it was 111 degrees F.

We ate lunch at an all day Dim Sum restaurant.

We ate our fill.

Alex rested as I paid the bill.

Near Death Valley...
we stopped in at a candy store so we could get cold drinks.

We are just a couple of hours away from home here.

After arriving at home...
Alex and I went out to eat at a Mexican restaurant.

Alex had a good time...
and he is now going to his university and college summer classes.

Alex is growing up so quickly.

In another month...
Alex will begin to learn how to drive.

  1. Alex is so used to being among the top performers at competitions; how did he take the team not faring as well as last year? I'm sure it was a great experience for the younger members and they will do learn from it.

How did Alex do in terms of his dorm experience?

  2. He was expecting it. Alex personally improved over last year, so, he was satisfied. The dorm experience...well...I have to admit, we watered it down some. He had a room all to himself, and we took him up some food to his dorm room, and we waited until he showered, set aside his next day's clothes, and had set his alarm, before we went back to our hotel. My wife also called him in the morning to ensure he had gotten up (he had). So, Alex had no problems. :)

    1. Sounds like the dorm experience was a good first step - for Alex as well as for his parents. ;)

  3. It is going to be so hard for us, as parents, to let Alex fly from the nest. It is good he wishes to, but we want to ensure he not only has strong wings, but a solid flight plan with built in redundancies, safe havens in case of emergency....etc. Are we ever going to fully let go? No. :)
