Alex Prepares For His Mathematical Talent Exhibition - The Night Before

Song:  Set Fire To The Rain (Bass Flute Cover)

Cover Artist:  Geniflute

The night before the competition.

Alex and I went to Staples to make over 2,600 copies of various tests...
answer sheets and solutions for his math competition.

Alex had designed and made all of the problems
for his First Annual Mathematical Talent Exhibition.

Alex had made multiple sets of problems for each of:

Elementary School

Middle School

High School

As we had to wait for the latest number of registrants...
and we had to at least double the number of contest materials
just in case we had a large number of walk in registrants...
we ended up copying, collating, and stapling for many hours at this Staples store.

The grand total - 2,642 copies / $313.09

Money well spent...
but the sheer number of copies astounded me.

----------

Alex's competition had a change of venue just days before the start of the contest.

His math club teacher was coordinating the actual running of the contest...
and she had volunteers from UNR to staff the contest...
and we had rooms reserved at UNR.

With just five days to go before the contest...
UNR said they had to do a deep cleaning of the whole building we had reserved.

Mrs. Griffin then contacted one of Alex's former teachers at Coral Academy.

He got us the use of Coral Academy's Elementary School.

Mrs. Griffin then got volunteers from the parents of the competitors to help out
on the day of the contest...
and everything flowed smoothly.

Over the next several articles...
I will cover the actual contest...
and I will put in the actual tests and the solutions
so you may have your children try it.

Just remember that the tests are advanced...
but these are the types of problems at many math competitions.

Especially at the high school level...
these problems are at the same level
as the Stanford University / UC Berkeley / Caltech math competitions.

----------

Alex made up all of the problems...
and then made the answer sheets for the scorers...
and he then made solution sheets.

Alex then had a UNR professor of math double check all of his answers and solutions...
and it all led up to today's competition.

Mrs. Griffin of NNV Math Club did a tremendous job
running the competition and assigning the volunteers.

My wife did the registration and sign ins...
and then helped out with the scoring.

I helped out here and there...
and the rest of the time I helped score the answer sheets
from all of the separate categories.

We had many simultaneous competitions running at once
from all of the categories.

In the next article...
I will cover the actual competition with the contest time schedule...
and pictures of the award ceremony.

In following articles...
I will include the actual competition problems and the solution sheets.
