Fourth Place For Northstar - Academic Olympics Finals

Song:  Adiemus

Northstar was competing for the rights to go to
the State Academic Olympic competition.

They were in the number four position going into the competition.

Just before the first heat.

It was a very close battle.

In the end...
Northstar lost by 10 points (1 question).

The final heat proved to be somewhat heartbreaking.

Northstar was ahead at the halftime break.

However, the other team pulled ahead.

No excuses...
they had done well.

One of the Academic Olympic coaches giving the team a pep talk after the competition.

They had done well for their first year.

They ended the season in fourth place...
and they will return next year...
hungry for victory.

We went out to dinner afterwards.

Dealing with loss is part of competition.

For the meek...
it signals a time to quit.

For true competitors...
it lights the fires of drive...
and they return more hungry than ever.

Alex can hardly wait for next year.

  1. You are right that dealing with loss is a part of competition. Alex has always done so well in his competitions so this is somewhat of a new experience, though I would say that Northstar performed quite admirably for their first year. I would not be at all surprised if they qualify for the state competition next year.

  2. It was a very good experience for them all. I must say, however, that the contest is too over balanced towards literature. All subjects should be represented equally by percentage. Northstar would have easily taken number one as Alex had quite easily answered them first. On the last day, there was only one math question in both of the heats. Sour grapes on my part? No, justified indignation. What am I going to do about it? I will write my argument to the national board. Do I think it will be effective? No.
Will it make me feel better? Yes :)

    1. I think you have a good argument... it should at least be consistent across all heats so that one team doesn't unfairly benefit or be unfairly punished just by the balance of subjects. You tell them! :)
