Week 3 Of 3 - Local Academic Olympics

Song:  Flight Of The Imagination

Group:  Future World Music

This was the last week of the first round of eliminations.

Due to Northstar's excellent performance on this third week...
they will be advancing to the second round of eliminations.

Last week they had won 3 out of the 4 heats.

Today...
they had won 3 out of 3 heats (a high school had dropped out on the first week).

For their first heat...
they had gone up against, what I had figured would be, the toughest school to beat...
as they have many advanced programs for their students.

Alex was, once again, the team captain.
The young man in the green jacket sitting next to him was the co-captain.

All of today's matches were fairly close...
and although the other schools had performed well...
this school in particular had the poor luck of having had a math question thrown in...
with the next three questions being bonus math questions...
and with Alex being on the opposing side.

Alex's team members always get a kick out of seeing Alex work his magic with math.

Alex is very accurate...and he has especially rapid calculative skills.

On the initial question (both teams may answer)...
they are given 3 seconds to answer.

On the bonus questions (the winner of the initial question)...
they are given 10 seconds to answer.

This particular question had involved trigonometry.

Alex had gotten all of the questions correct...
and it had really helped his team move ahead.

This doesn't take away from his other team members though.

Each member had done very well.
Everyone seemed to be on their game all day long.

Near the ending of the last round of this first heat.

At this point...
only the scorekeepers knew the scores.

However...
as we would soon learn...
Northstar (Alex's school) had won...
and we then moved on to another classroom for the next heat.

In the second heat...
Northstar went up against a private school.

They had also proved to be tough.

However...
Northstar had again won the heat.

So...
it was on to the final heat.

This last heat was close for a while.

But...
Northstar had won again...
making their wins for this day at 3 out of 3.

Northstar will be advancing to the second phase of eliminations...
next week.

-----------

I always enjoy seeing young men and women
getting involved in their academics.

This event was exciting to watch...
and it was gratifying to see good sportsmanship being practiced
throughout this whole competition.

Next week...
the stakes are raised.

It will be interesting to see how things turn out.

Either way...
Alex's school had already made a good showing for their first year of competition.

-------------

In a couple of days...
Alex will be attending a dinner at the local
Veterans of Foreign Wars hall to receive his 1st place local award for his essay.

We will also find out how far up the competition tier he had gone.

Again...
if this will be like his previous local essay wins...
he will be asked to read his essay in front of all the attendees and guests.

I will video record him reading his essay.

Then...
this weekend, we will be traveling to California
so Alex may compete in the UC Berkeley math competition.

This week is busy...
but, it will prove to be interesting...
and another great learning experience for Alex.

  1. Trying to get caught up after being very busy with work for weeks... This local academic olympics seems like a nice change of pace from the math competitions that Alex enters. Very impressive that Alex's online school would do so well. They seemed to get better each week. It must have felt a little odd for the students to get together the first time as I don't imagine they have that much contact otherwise.

  2. Alex had only seen a couple of them before. After they got their rhythm, they really did well. Alex really enjoys the academic olympics, and he is looking forward to doing it for the next two years after this year.
