Week 1 Of 3 - Local Academic Olympics

Song:  Heaven

Artist:  Florian Bur

Alex arriving at a local high school for the local Academic Olympics.

There are a total of 12 high schools from some 5 local cities
competing in a game show style academic trivia and general knowledge
round robin competition.

This is the first year for Alex's school to compete.

My one complaint...
they had de-emphasized Math.

Math is a core subject.

The competition should have the same number of questions for Math...
by percentage, as all of the other subjects.

Math was only asked about 6% of the total questions.

Of course...
the more math questions asked...
the greater the advantage given to Alex's school...
as Alex is the math specialist for the school
(each student specialized in a subject or two).

In this first week of competition...
Alex had correctly answered the math questions...6 out of 7 times
(buzzer system - first one to buzz in gets the chance to answer it).

Most of the questions involved literature...
historical and geographical trivia...
and with some science thrown in...
but very, very few math questions  :(

We were in search of the team meeting area.

This young man is one of Alex's teammates.
He was doing some magic tricks to entertain us as we waited.

The various teams were getting their competition site.

Two teams would go head to head...
and they would then go to other classrooms...
or would stay and another team would rotate in.

There would be a total of 4 heats on the one competition day per week...
for 3 weeks...
giving a total of 12 high schools done round robin so each high school
would face all of the other high schools.

A full team is 8 persons...but only 4 at a time compete.
Northstar only had 6 people...
and they rotated in the others.

For the most part of the day's competition...
the girl on the right was the team captain...
and Alex was the co-captain.

Their team had lost...
and so...
we went to the next head to head.

Once again...
their team lost.

And again...
they lost.

The last contest of the day...
they had lost once again.

Although Alex had done very well with the math portion...
most of the questions involved literature and historical trivia.

After each of Alex's competitions...
we always go out to eat...
Alex's choice.

During week two of the competition...
Alex's team had done well against their opponents.
