Alex's Paternal Grandmother Update - House Lost

Song:  Nocturne

Group:  Secret Garden

Taken last week by my wife from our backyard.
This is facing away from the sunset (East)...
yet, the skies are filled with color...
for as far as one could see.

I wanted to illustrate that many of Reno's sunsets light up the entire sky...
not just the Western skies.

----------

My mother's bid for the house did not succeed.
A better bid had been given.

Rather than being disappointed...
she is excited at the prospect of finding another one.

There are so many good homes to choose from here.
She knows that she will get one which suits her soon...
an even better one.

My mother will now stay with us for a few months
until she buys another house here.

I took these photos a couple of days ago.

My mother in our backyard...
looking at a soft pastel sunset...
and looking Eastwards.

My mother looking at the same sunset from our backyard...
only this time...she is looking Westwards.

While not so spectacular as many of our sunsets...
this sunset was still nice.

Our house sets under the heart of the sunsets
(as well as at the end of the rainbows  :)

Although this may sound silly at first...
there is a reason we get many beautiful sunsets here.

First of all...
the Sierra Nevada mountain range is just Southwest of us.
It forces the relatively moist air from the Pacific Ocean...
to rise, cool, and condense, into fabulous clouds of all shapes and sizes
as they drift over Reno.

We live on another set of mountains in the Northwest of Reno.
Our house sits at just over 1 mile in elevation (5,300 feet or 1.6 Kilometers).

Many of the clouds are relatively low in the sky as a result.

As the sun sets behind the near mountains on our Western horizon...
this puts us right underneath the starting point of Reno's sunsets
(from our perspective)...
and so, at the heart of the sunsets.

We get a wide variety of sunsets here...
from soft pastels...to brilliant luminescent ones.

The next night...
we took my mother out to eat at one of our favorite restaurants.

Other than one tooth implant due to a tooth fracture...
all of my mother's teeth are her natural ones.

Although this is mostly the result of good genetics
(deep roots into solid bone structure)...
most everyone may enjoy having all of their own teeth for life
through the practice of good dental hygiene...
brushing AND flossing after EACH meal or snack.

Alex and my mother had the Salmon Kabab.

Although my mother is 76 years old...
she still has a healthy appetite.

I had gotten my big appetite from my mother.

We both have high metabolic rates.

As a result...
we may eat large amounts of food without worry over gaining too much weight
(Although, this puts us at a disadvantage in a survival situation.
We would be the first to starve  :)

Much of what we eat...
is converted to heat.

This is also the reason I love cold weather...
and why I hate hot humid weather.

Alex had a combination ice cream and baklava dessert.

My mother and I shared this ice cream dessert.

My mother's appetite will increase even more when I get her on a regular exercise program.

I took her to a Tai Chi school a couple of days ago.

Although she didn't want to learn at this particular place
(There were too many young people.  She wants to learn with more aged people)...
we will look at other schools soon.

I will also reinitiate her weight training program (I have her do Trap Bar Deadlifts)
once we go back to California in a couple of days to pick up her weight set...
among a few other items.

The next night...
we had dinner at home.

Alex had a modified Japanese dinner...
broiled eel over pasta.

My mother and I had grilled mackerel
(she also had Miso Soup and Nato).

(Her hair is a little messy...
she had just arisen from a nap  :)

Right now...
my mother and I stay up late watching Korean Dramas together.

Last night...
we enjoyed viewing a drama while eating hot buttered popcorn
and drinking cold non-alcoholic beer.

We have always enjoyed watching them while eating noodles...
or some other snacks.

Our record is having watched a 25 hour drama in just two sessions
(many years ago).

We watched it for 12 hours straight
(eating as we watched)...
went to sleep...
awakened...
then viewed it until it was finished...
another 13 hours later  :)

Needless to say...
we love our Korean Dramas!

Right now...
my mother is enjoying her Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 64 G
(she ordered one from Amazon a few days ago).

She loves playing a variety of games on it...
and listening to the music I had loaded into it
(much of the same music I use in my blog...she even loves Pink Floyd!  :)

My mother and I think alike.

We both love the simple pleasures in life.

To simply exist...is not enough.

We must each...
forge our own future...
and fill it with a deep love of everything in life.

Plan your life well...
but also listen to your heart.

Love fully and openly.

Our time in life is simply too short to do otherwise.

Addendum:

A few funny things

(As last night's supper was much later than normal...
I ate light, as Alex and I would go on our night walk soon afterwards.
However, I still vomited once during the walk  ;)

I usually wait 3 - 4 hours after eating before our night walks...
but as our night walk takes place at 10 PM or so...
we couldn't afford to walk later.

My water glass reminded me of when my mother had first seen me drinking from it
(her glass is on the left...in my hand.  Mine is on the right).

She looked at me and asked me why I was drinking from a flower vase! :) :) :)

I drink a lot of water...and I hate having to constantly refill my glass.

I just wanted to give an example of a typical meal.

This was my mother's meal:

sliced roast pork...
lightly grilled kale and tofu...
dried and spiced small anchovies...
cucumber pickles...
miso soup, and rice.

These are typical healthful portions for most people.

However...
my mother can usually eat much more.
However, we ate a very late lunch...
and so, she ate a light supper :)

Alex was really wiped out by our night walk.

We are now carrying 80 lbs. in our rucksacks.

After getting home...
and right after Alex slipped off his rucksack...
he just lay on the carpet near the entrance for a few minutes.

He was very tired during our walk...
the most tired I have ever seen him.

I had vomited once, just as we reached our front lawn
(only because I had eaten too closely to exercising).

We are increasing the weight carried 5 lbs at a time now.
We carry added weight until it becomes comfortable...
and then add 5 more lbs.

Because of our vacation...
and my helping my mother find a new home...
we have had to put our exercising on hold.

As a result...
we lost some of our conditioning...
and this walk was felt more acutely than usual.

Our next night walk should prove to be far easier than this one had been.

Alex's Paternal Aunt And Grandmother Update - House Offer In

Song:  Silent Wings

Group:  Secret Garden

A couple of days ago...
my elder sister, my mother, and I, went looking at various houses.

My mother has decided to look for a house to buy now...
so she may move in right away.

She was going to rent and wait for her model to be built...
but has decided to get a less expensive house since she will only be here
for three years (we will be moving in three years...and my mother will move with us).

We looked at a house for sale not too far from us...
and she liked it, however, we also looked at others.

We went out to dinner at a sushi restaurant...
and the next day, we narrowed down our search to a couple of preferable houses.

The next day...
my elder sister, my mother, and I, went to a mountain cafe for lunch.

On the following day...
we ate lunch at a Mexican Taqueria...
and that night...
my sister drove back home.

The next day...
my mother went to look at another home...
but she preferred an earlier one we had seen (less than 10 minutes from my house).

Yesterday...
she had put in an offer on the house...
and we are waiting until she gets an answer as to if her offer is accepted or rejected.

This morning...
my mother and I had Salmon Ochazuke for breakfast.

The night before...
Alex had taught his grandmother how to play Othello
(Alex had won all the games).

After breakfast...
my mother and I played Othello.

My mother seems delighted at her greater number of colors on the board.

Although I had ended up winning this game...
to be fair...
she had won the previous two games  :)

Alex fills his days with studies...
and he likes watching segments of his various math DVD series
with his mother at night.

For the past week...
I have been taking my mother and elder sister around
our zip code to look at houses.

It was just yesterday when I took her to her realtor
so I could review the house offer contract
before she signed it.

Today is just for relaxing and waiting for word tomorrow...
as to whether or not her offer will be accepted.

My mother is excited...
as the house she wants is just perfect for her.

Although it is much less expensive than the model she had initially wanted...
it still has some mountain views...it is higher up in the mountains...
it also has modern styling and is in a very good neighborhood.

With the offer we had put in...
if accepted...
she could move in...
in a couple of weeks.

Once she moves here...
I will be taking Alex and his grandmother swimming once a week (indoor pool).

I want Alex to know...
and to enjoy being with, his grandmother.

I will ensure my mother is practicing the basic three of good health
(Nutritious and Delicious Meals / Exercise / Deep Restorative Sleep).

I will go more into this once I establish my mother's
physical / psychological wellness program...
shortly after she moves here.

-----------------

The prime teacher in life...
is one of example set.

I want Alex to realize that loyalty is not a result of obligation...
but a natural result of love having been received...
and of love, therefore, happily and freely given.

Not only am I caring for someone I love dearly...
I am setting an example for Alex in how he should care for his mother
when she is in her advanced years...should I die first.

Alex's Paternal Grandmother And Aunt Visit His Math Circle

Song:  Hijo De La Luna

Artist:  Sarah Brightman

My mother and elder sister came to visit a few days ago.

Shortly before they arrived...
my wife had taken these sunset shots from our yards
(front and back yards...of the same sunset as it progressed).

Shortly before the sunset had subsided...
Alex was dancing and goofing off in front of our house
as my wife was taking the last of her pictures for the night.

The next morning...
Alex went to his math circle.

My mother and sister had arrived the night before.

My mother is now 76 years old...
but she still loves life...
especially the simple pleasures abounding within...
including good food.

My mother came to rent a home until she may purchase...
and wait for the house she wants to buy, to be built.

On this morning...
we again visited the model she likes.

We then dropped off Alex at his math circle at UNR...
and my mother, elder sister, and I, went out to a local Thai restaurant for lunch.

We ordered a seafood soup and two types of curry.

Their food was very good.

After lunch we went upstairs to where Alex was solving problems
with some other members of his math circle.

There were only three of the members there on this day.

Many of the others are on vacation.

All three solved all of the problems of a previous Mandelbrot math contest
(each member had worked independently...
and each had solved all of the problems correctly).

We sat in some chairs as we waited for Alex's math circle to conclude their session.

We then made our way out...
and back home.

A few hours later...
we went out to eat at a Teppanyaki restaurant.

We had to wait but a few minutes.

Everyone enjoyed the show...
and the food.

We enjoyed Filet Mignon...
Lobster, Shrimp, Calamari, Scallops, and Chicken...
and I had fried, and white, rice.

Alex especially enjoyed the Filet Mignon.

Alex missed the flying broccoli...7 times :)

We then ate dessert...
and several hours later...
bedded down for the night.

On the next day...
we continued our search for a good temporary home
for my mother to rent nearby.

We have more homes to look at tomorrow.
