Alex Turns Fifteen Years Old - A Year In Retrospect

Song:  Story Of My Life

Artists:  The Piano Guys

Alex turned fifteen years old...a few days ago.

His mother had gotten Alex a Kindle as a backup to his iPad.

His grandmother and I had gotten him this watch for his birthday.

As he is a young man now...
I thought it time for him to wear a man sized watch.

In another 6 months...
Alex is going to start learning how to drive.

The car we are now driving will eventually become his.

He is excited about this.

Alex had chosen the restaurant he wanted to eat at for his birthday.

We had ordered their Filet Mignon, Lobster, Scallops, Shrimp, and Chicken dish.

As it had been snowing earlier, and their was ice on the streets...
most people stayed at home.

This made for a very peaceful night out.

My mother couldn't finish her meal.

Her dog 'Hana' had his next couple of meals...
dog food and surf and turf :)

It was snowing more at our houses in the mountains...
so, our car still had some snow on it.

Over the past year...
Alex has been very busy...
as usual.

About this time last year...
just after he had turned 14 years old...
Alex competed in the Harvey Mudd / Caltech Math Tournament
(we are going to Caltech for their math tournament in a few days).

Alex finished up his Linear Algebra course
at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR).

Alex and I had gone on a two day California Zephyr snow train trip
(overnight stay in Sacramento, CA).

(A photo from our hotel room in Sacramento, CA)

Our trip back on the Zephyr.

Alex then took, and finished, a Calculus III course at UNR.

Alex had taken the SAT II Math Subject test...
and had gotten a perfect score
(an 800 score is perfect).

I had Alex practice some basic sports at a nearby park.

Alex had taken the AMC 12 math competition test...
and he had qualified for...
and had taken, the AIME test
(American Invitational Mathematics Examination).

Alex had once again participated in the ARML Nationals in Las Vegas
with his Math club (NNV Math club)...
and his team had taken 6th place in the Nation for their league.

We had gone a 5 State...
8 day trip which included such places as...
the Grand Canyon...
Berringer Crater...
Petrified Forest...
White Sands...
Carlsbad Caverns...
Monument Valley...
Canyonlands...
and Bonnyville Salt Flats.

Alex continued tutoring high school math students
(Alex started tutoring high school math students in the 8th grade).

Alex started his own competition math club at his high school...
and he is the instructor.

Alex had gotten to know his 76 year old paternal grandmother
(who subsequently moved here a few months after visiting).

Alex is presently finishing up his Differential Equations course at UNR.

He will attempt to register for a Game Theory math course for next semester at UNR
(if he can register for the course before it fills up).

-------------------------

Alex has greatly matured this past year.

Intellectually...
Emotionally...
Physically...
he has really grown.

However...
this year...
he will really grow much stronger physically.

As we couldn't add much more weight to the rucksacks
without really straining our lower backs as we walked uphill

(Okay...my lower back  :)...

I had recently bought a great piece of training equipment
for Alex and I to use
(it should arrive later this week).

It will allow tremendous amounts of weight to be carried...
in a more upright fashion
(a strongman yoke).

We will walk a much shorter distance...
however...
the weight carried will be dramatically increased (a little at a time)...
without lower back strain.

After we get much stronger with this piece of equipment...
we may, once again...
go longer distances with the rucksack walks (on different days).

I will be writing an article with Alex using this piece of equipment...
very soon.

  1. This year in review really highlights all of the wonderful things that you all did, and Alex's many great accomplishments.

  2. Alex will learn to drive this year. This will be the largest change he has faced. This is the year I really start to worry. :)
