Weight Training Progress / Alex Teaching His Own Math Club

Song:  My Way

Artist:  Mirella Pantano

Alex and his grandmother have both made steady improvement in their weight training.

As Alex was going to full height in his pull ups...
I had him add 5 lbs to a weight belt as he did them.

When he can do 25 sets of these...
I will have him add another 5 lbs.

My mother is now lifting 70 lbs in the TB Deadlift.

When she can do 25 sets of these...
I will add 5 lbs.

My mother is doing incline pull ups.

When she can do 25 sets...
I will steepen the incline.

Alex is lifting much lighter than he can do
because I want him to toughen his tendons also
(they strengthen more slowly than do the muscles).

He is only lifting 220 lbs.
When he reaches 25 sets...
I will add 10 lbs.

They both should steadily increase in weight used.

In a year's time...
Alex should be able to lift 300 lbs for 25 sets...
and my mother should be over 100 lbs for 25 sets.

Since I am training a youth and an elderly person...
this method is one of the safest ways...
along with one of the most effective means of strength training.

Alex got permission from his high school to run his own competition math club
at the high school and middle school.

Alex prepared his own questions and lesson plan...
and today was his first meeting.

It was open to middle schoolers for Mathcount and AMC 8 practice...
and it was open for high schoolers for AMC 10 / 12 and ARML practice.

Alex is trying to develop a love of math in the youths...
and he will try to get his competition club to compete in various math contests.

Alex arrived early and awaited his first students.

Below are the problems Alex had made up for the first lesson.

These were for the middle schoolers.

I had sat outside the classroom while Alex taught the youths...
but I could hear how much fun he was having teaching his class.

His voice was loud and clear...
and he passed on a new understanding of math to his class.

Alex could only reserve a room for once every two weeks...
but he plans to make the best use of his time by always typing out new problems...
and developing his lesson plan from the new concepts he wishes to teach.

Alex loves to teach.

This is good solid practice for his chosen career path...
that of a University Math Professor.

  1. Impressive to see how strong Alex is getting, and how your mother is able to push herself as well.

Did Alex say much about the students he taught? Were they at the level he as expecting?

  2. Alex said that there were no middle schoolers there on the first day, so he just used the problems on some high schoolers who had. He is hoping to get some middle schoolers next time also. He said his students seemed enthusiastic and he hopes they will continue. The NNV Math club will be hosting some math competitions at UNR this year. He hopes to get some of his students interested in math competition enough that they will compete there.
