Alex And His Grandmother's Thursday Weight Training Update

Song:  Storm

Artists:  Yoshida Brothers

My 14 year old son...
and my 76 year old mother...
have the same basic exercise program.

On Sundays...
they both do the Trap Bar Deadlift...
and pull ups (modified pull ups for my mother).

They both do night walks with a rucksack.

Alex's rucksack presently has 80 lbs of sand in it.

My mother's rucksack is empty...for now.

However...
I will start to add sand to it in smaller doses...
in a month or so...
once she reaches the apex of the halfway point hill.

Alex and his grandmother's Thursday exercise schedule below.

All of the following photos were taken last night.

Alex Cleaning and Jerking 95 lbs.

(Although I had started him out with 80 lbs...
his form was good...
and although this weight is also easy for him...
I had to increase the weight so he could actually start benefiting from the exercise).

On Thursdays...
they both do Clean and Jerks...
and Pull Ups (modified for my mother).

My mother had purchased herself a beginner's weight set...
as the empty bar only weighs 10 lbs...
so she may lift it with ease...
and practice her form...
while still having some resistance.

She had picked the bar up from the ground with ease...
too much ease actually.

On the set prior to this...
she had actually accidentally completed an Olympic Snatch...
instead of a Clean and Jerk  :)

I will have her work on her form for awhile...
before adding weight plates to the bar.

My mother must still work on her split catch
(deeper and wider).

I still must get her to hold her head up...and put her butt down more...
but she is doing well learning the basic mechanics of the Clean and Jerk.

My mother had actually gone all the way to the top on her first set of these modified pull ups
(her chin was above and forwards of the top padding).

On this set...
she had gotten tired...
and so, could only make it halfway up.

-----------------

The same exercise program for the young or old.

WHY?

Wrong question.

As all of our bodies have the same needs...
and as these exercises stimulate the whole body...
the question should then be...

WHY NOT?

Especially for the elderly...
the eventual lifting/carrying of an appreciable amount of weight must be the goal...
if they are to protect their bones from Osteoporosis...
 prevent Muscle Insulin Resistant Diabetes...
 prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis
(and the full or mini strokes associated with it)...
and to keep their bodies mobile and strong enough
to be able to dance the night away...
until their final slumber takes them away...
still sharp of mind...and strong of body.

Why the Trap Bar Deadlift?

The Standard Deadlift is one of the lifts which exercises all of the major muscles
of the body...while allowing for maximal weight to be used...
which in turn...allows for maximum benefit for the whole body.

The Trap Bar Dead Lift allows even more weight to be lifted...
without the tremendous shearing forces on the lower back...
not only making this a safer exercise to do...
but as it allows even more weight to be lifted...
it does even more good for the whole body.

Why the sand filled rucksack night walks?

When an appreciable amount of weight is carried for 1 - 2 miles...
it also greatly strengthens the whole body (aerobically as well)...
as well as greatly stimulating the skeletal system to grow much more dense.

Why the Clean and Jerks?

Besides being a whole body exercise...
it teaches the practitioner to athletically coordinate his whole body...
in an explosive manner.

Correct balance, timing, and breathing, is essential in this exercise.

It also stimulates the often under used spinal column erector muscles...
 and even the bones themselves
(when appreciable amounts of weight are used).

This exercise greatly improves posture as well as balance.

This is not only an excellent whole body exerciser...
it especially exercises the calf muscles.

Why the Pull Ups?

It exercises the largest upper body muscles...
the Latissimus Dorsi (the V that forms from the waist to the shoulders)...
as well as a host of other muscles which keep the shoulders down...
and without which, would allow you to keep your ears warm without wearing ear muffs  :)

They keep the shoulders down and back...
where they should be...
and also improves general posture.

These same muscles, along with the major arm muscles...
are used in all of the major pulling motions.

Pull Ups teach the upper body to work in a powerful
and coordinated fashion in all such motions.

Just last night...
my mother had quite a lot of supper.

Her appetite for food has greatly increased...
as her new exercise program has greatly increased her body's need
for better nutrition and larger amounts to burn and to build with
(her body fat is decreasing...and her muscles are growing).

Her sleep is much more solid now...
 her mobility has greatly increased...
her balance is better...
and she has much more lust for life.

My mother now loves to exercise...
as she is reaping many of the positive benefits of correct exercise.

Whole body exercise increases the amounts of growth hormone
which is released during deep restorative sleep.

It also increases the amount of deep restorative sleep...
as it drains away all stress from the body.

The natural result is a positive cycle of greater health...
and a much greater appreciation for the simple pleasures of life...
all of which are enjoyed to a much greater degree...
all because of the short walks through the gates of hell...
so that all of the beauty of the heavens may be enjoyed the whole of the rest of the time.

  1. Love that your mom is so enthusiastic about taking on this exercise program. How great that she can share the experience of working out with Alex. You will keep her as fit and healthy as possible!

  2. My mother feels so much better now. After her workout and shower, we will watch a drama or play video games together. She then falls asleep and awakens refreshed. Alex enjoys our workouts together also.
