A Few Days In The Life Of Alex And His Grandmother

Song:  Set Fire To The Rain - Bass Flute Cover

Artist (Bass Flute):  Geni Skendo

In general...
Alex's everyday activities involves studying throughout the day...
and going to classes at UNR, math club, tutoring at his high school, and exercising.

In a few months...
so long as his schedule will allow for it...
I hope for Alex to begin studying music...
and to train in a martial art once again.

These pictures involved just the past few days of everyday activities
that he and his grandmother had done together.

Alex was invited to his old high school to give a speech to their math competition class
on his experiences at his math competitions...
and on how he had prepared for them.

This was the second time he had been invited to give a 50 minute presentation
on math competitions and on his preparation methods
(the first time was at his old middle school).

When Alex was in middle school...
he was actually taking math at the high school with the 12th graders...
and he tutored these same high school students in Algebra and Trigonometry.

His old school, and especially his old math teachers, are very proud of Alex.

Not only was he the first, and still...
the only one in the history of the school to have competed in the Mathcounts Nationals
(only the top four students in each State go to the Nationals)...
he had taken first place in the State in 2014.

Later that night...
Alex and his grandmother exercised together.

They started out with some light stretching.

They then did their Thursday weight training
(Clean and Jerks / Pull Ups).

The next day...
Alex tutored high school students in math
(he does this every week).

After we dropped off Alex at his high school...
we went to a local Whole Foods grocery store to eat a light lunch of Pizza
(it is just one block away from his high school).

After our lunch...
we picked up Alex...
and we all went home.

As Alex studies...
my mother and I usually take care of any unfinished tasks needing to be done...
or simply relax at home.

Starting next week...
my mother and I will be very busy everyday.

We will be looking at houses near my house...
 for my mother to buy.

The next day...
we went to a local indoor swimming center so Alex could swim
for an hour before his math club practice...
however, it was closed for maintenance.

So...
we got some lunch...
and I then took Alex to his math club practice at UNR.

Later that night...
we went out for dinner at one of our favorite restaurants...
Naan and Kabab.

It is a Mediterranean restaurant...
and it is one of the hidden gems of Reno.

We had just arrived at the restaurant

I really like this fountain.

It is at an entrance to the Peppermill Casino.

Naan and Kabab lies directly across the street from the Peppermill Casino.

I know I have written about this restaurant before...
but I must go more into the food here.

Their cooks know how to spice and cook meats like almost no others can.

Alex's favorite...
Salmon Kabab.

My mother had the Marinated Steak Kabab.

It is this that I want to speak about.

I had tried it for the first time after many years of our coming here.

First...
you will notice the slight charing of the meat and vegetables.

All their meat and side vegetables are fire grilled.

This brings out the natural flavors like no other style of cooking.

Besides being very tender and juicy...
their meats are spiced so well...
which makes this meat so full flavored.

The salivary glands feel as if a giant hand were squeezing them...
and the tongue feels so alive.

The flavors come bursting out with the natural juices...
and just makes the whole top of your head tingle...
and your body feel so light.

You know you are eating a full flavored meat...
when you don't even think of putting any sauces on it.

Their Chuck Tender was better than almost any Filet Mignon I have ever had.

This is my new favorite dish at Naan and Kabab.

And...

Alex tried one from his grandmother's plate...
and loved it.

Alex and I are going to order the Marinated Steak Kabab next time.

One last picture before we went home.

We always look forward to our Saturday night out.

It is a reward for a week of good effort...
just one of the many carrots in life everyone should place before themselves...
to enjoy upon meeting objectives.

We hope to go to Lake Tahoe next Sunday
to enjoy the Truckee River...
and to eat at one of the restaurants lining it near the the river's source
(Lake Tahoe).

My mother is greatly enjoying her time with Alex.

It is so good to see them together and enjoying themselves.

------------

It is now Sunday night...
and Alex and his grandmother had just finished their Sunday weight training together.

Both are seeing steady improvement in their lifts.

My mother is especially surprised at how she is so easily adapting to her exercises.

She feels so much better...
her posture has improved...
and her energy levels and everyday movements have improved dramatically.

Where before...
she would timidly and tentatively move when faced with objects to step over...
first pausing at the object before her...
and then shakily moving one foot over and pausing once again before lifting the other...
she now steps over multiple objects with the ease of a cat...
with no pause or hesitation.

I cannot express enough how important the basic three are to the
quantity and quality of life.

My mother is enjoying life like never before because of her
now living life by the basic three.

  1. Nice to see your mother so active and enjoying her time with all of you. Besides the physical training regiment you have established for her, I'm sure that being able to spend more time with you and Alex has improved her quality of life and makes her more happy.

  2. She now has a bright future ahead of her. She had the courage to make lifestyle changes...and she is now reaping the rewards.
