Day 3 - Alex's 5 State Summer Vacation

Song:  Goodbye Blue Sky

Group:  Pink Floyd

The next morning we went to Meteor Crater just 20 minutes outside of Winslow, AZ.

Just one of the many fragments of the meteorite which had caused the crater.

We then continued on to Painted Desert / Petrified Forest...
not too far down the road.

We stopped in at a souvenir shop just outside of the Painted Desert / Petrified Forest.

The Painted Desert is called such because of a stratification of pastel earth tones in the formations.

We are at the Crystal Forest in the Petrified Forest.

The petrified logs were the result of minerals filling in each of the cells of the wood
before they could decay.

We had seen the area...
and were ready to go on to our next stop...
Las Cruces, NM for the night, to stage us for
White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns for the evening bat flight.

On our way to Las Cruces...
had seen these large radar arrays laid out in a pattern.

Although it wasn't part of our itinerary...
I immediately recognized them as being part of the Very Large Array.

I had read about them many decades ago.

They were made to detect and image radio emissions from the universe...
in far greater detail than was previously possible.

There are 27 individual receivers on a railroad track.
They can be moved along these to accommodate special purposes.

As an entity...
the combined information may be seen as if there were one dish...
22 miles wide.

As part of a larger radio wave astronomical detecting system...
in combination with a system in Hawaii and the Virgin Islands...
they make up the worlds largest such system...
and so, has the greatest resolution of any yet made.

I stopped off the side of the road to take these shots.

We were 80 miles from Las Cruces in this photo.
We were just outside of a town called 'Truth or Consequences'.

This town had actually changed its name from 'Hot Springs' to this name...
after a radio show (and later, a TV show) called 'Truth or Consequences' had a contest
in which the prize was having the 10th anniversary broadcast from the newly named town.

Before going to the hotel...
we stopped in at Red Lobster for our dinner.

Alex had flounder...
and I had a sumptuous seafood linguini platter.

The next article will cover White Sands, NM...
and the evening bat flight portion of Carlsbad Caverns.

  1. I'm sure my son would love the Petrified Forest.

  2. It was a short drive off the Hwy. They also had a large Info Center...but I already knew about the area. This was my third time there. Kai would have had a blast. You could touch the mineralized logs.
