En Route To The 2015 ARML Nationals In Las Vegas

Song:  Everybody's Talkin'

Artist:  Harry Nilsson

We left for the 2015 ARML Nationals...
a worldwide high school math contest.

Alex and his math club...NNV Math Club...
would compete in Las Vegas in a four location...
(Las Vegas - Western US and all of Asia / Iowa - mid US...
Pennsylvania and Georgia - all of Europe)...
simultaneously administered high school advanced math competition.

There would be over 2,000 competitors from around the world competing
in one of the four US locations.

This is Alex 3rd year of competing at the ARML Nationals.

He started going in the 7th grade...
when his math circle was first formed 3 years ago (NNV Math Club).

We left a day before the first phase of the two day competition...
so Alex could get a good night's sleep before competing.

After leaving a little after noon...
we drove all day (over 10 hours including lunch and vista breaks)...
taking a slightly different route from years prior, and of which included Death Valley.

We are not too far down the road here above Lake Topaz...
and we continued down Hwy 395 as it is so scenic.

We then cut through Death Valley...
and down Hwy 95 to Las Vegas.

It got dark before we fully crossed Death Valley...
and it was still 103 degrees F outside.

We arrived at our hotel (Stratosphere in Las Vegas)...after 11 PM.

We simply showered and went to bed.

As the first phase of the competition was not scheduled to start until 6 PM...
we decided to eat at a good Japanese restaurant before heading to UNLV
to meet up with Alex's Math team.

The next article will cover the first day of the competition.

  2. It is one of my favorite drives. In a couple of weeks, we are going on our long driving vacation. I expect to see many more beautiful sights on the way.
