Adages From A Bonehead: Morality

Song:  A Pillow Of Winds

Group:  Pink Floyd

If you have not already read the first of these articles:

Socrates

 The teacher of Plato

Plato

 The student of Socrates...
and the teacher of Aristotle

Aristotle

 The student of Plato...
and the teacher of Alexander The Great.

These three men are widely regarded as the fathers of Western Civilization.

They had recognized and systematized the concept of right and wrong...
the logical methods of achieving right, and refuting wrong
(not just in questions of morality...but as a way to solve all problems)...
and basic principles of living well
through the governing of behavior as individuals, and as groups...
in an efficient and effective manner.

MORALS:

Golden rules regarding virgin right and wrong...
as applied to all humans and their behavior.

As these rules are universal...
and universally applied to all...
they are subject to degradation...
neither by time... nor by circumstance.

These golden rules are the template for the following basic subcategories:

VIRTUE:

An ideal behavior of morality.

VALUES:

That which is held as virtuous by various groups or societies.

ETHICS:

Principles or rules which govern a person's, or a group's, behavior.

Problems arise in the world because either:

Morals are not established...
and/or...
Values and Ethics are not aligned with Morals.

Okay...
all easily said...
however, what does all this mean?

Example:

MORAL:

Everyone has the right to exist...
unless he attempts to unjustifiably take that right from another...
either through action, or through inaction.

VIRTUE:

Assertion

VALUE:

Self Reliance / Self Protection

ETHIC:

The laws determining the difference between
that of Murder, and that of Self Defense.

Perverted moral:

No one has the right to kill another (ever)
(as in the frequently misinterpreted religious saying of:
'thou shall not kill').

The meaning is... 'thou shall not murder'.

If the previous were the case...
no one would have the right to self protection...
or in the protection of his children or family...
or that of any other innocent person.

Misalignment of an ethic to that which is moral:

Partial Birth / Late Term Abortions
(I am not talking of morning after pills or pre 8 week old abortions)

Planned Natural Expiration

The withholding of fluids and nourishment
to stable non-brain dead comatose patients
(they are dehydrated to death...with pain control in place).

And who deserves a lifetime of welfare
more than those who cannot do for themselves?
(with none given to those who can do for themselves, but choose not to).

Such as was the case of Terri Schiavo (free care for life should have been provided)...
and especially with our grievously injured soldiers returning
from a war zone from exactly where our society had sent them
(they deserve full pay for the rest of their lives...
along with quality, speedy, and free, health care).

With mere euphemisms...
and with the mere citation of a greater need through false argumentation...
morals are frequently, and conveniently, overridden.

How so?

How is it that the most innocent of all beings (a viable baby)...
may be subject to death on the false argument of it being a woman's choice?
(again, I am not talking of pre 8 week old abortions).

Let's see...

A woman has the choice to take full preventive measures ahead of time
through a variety of contraceptives.

Check

A woman has the choice to take precautionary measures after the fact
to prevent implantation of the fertilized egg to the womb through
the 'Morning After Pill'...or even one which causes a miscarry.

Check

A woman has the choice to monitor her body for pregnancy while
there is still plenty of time to exercise an early abortion
(actually...three full months).

Check

A woman has the choice to give her baby up for adoption right after birth.

Check

A woman has the choice to drop off her unwanted baby...
at any 'Safe Haven' (usually any Police or Fire Station)...
and depending on the State...
from 3 days to 1 year after giving birth...
all without fear of prosecution.

Check

You wish to tell me about how Partial Birth / Late Term Abortions...
are a woman's choice?

Another frequently cited excuse is one of deep psychological harm
to the mother were she forced to carry her baby to full term.

What?

The mother cites that she would always wonder about how her
child were doing in the world were she to give her baby up for adoption
(so...it really is a matter of selfish convenience...isn't it?).

There is no general justification for them.

I am sorry...
but it is Checkmate.

On just the thinnest of excuses...
a mother may have her viable child killed...
and a doctor may murder for profit.

Precisely because there is not always
the firm alignment from Morals to Ethics...
anything may be done to anyone...at anytime.

If even the most innocent being may be murdered...legally...
anything may be justified.

By just saying that a simple majority consensus...
if even by just those in power...
somehow justifies any action...
then anything may happen.

This is when people are ruled by man...
instead of being ruled by morals.

Those of whom live without firm morals to rule them...
shall forever be manipulated, ruled, and eventually enslaved, by the whims of tyrants

(I don't know if this was an actual quote from someone famous.
I seem to remember it from somewhere...and I paraphrased it).

Let's see...

Hitler and the Holocaust.

Socialist Russia under Stalin and Lenin.
Their great purges...including the Pogroms...the Gulags.

Communist China under Mao with their great purge.

Pol Pot in Cambodia

Hmmm...
we are already at an estimated 100 million engineered, and specifically targeted, deaths.

You can see the problems which arise when ethics
are not kept in strict alignment with morals.

The Importance Of Morals:

Morals are what give structure to the behavior of human beings...
the most important of which is the identification of the existence...
and the identification of...
 right and wrong...
and without which...
everything would be subjective

(nothing would be objectively true...
everything would be a matter of perspective...
there would be no black and white...only grey...
and so, anything would be okay).

Morals must always be the guiding principles
in order to assure the greatest possibility of survival...
as well as setting up life for maximal gain...
for individuals and, especially for, groups of people.

Morals also must apply at all times...
to all people...everywhere...
and under all circumstances.

They must, therefore...
be very broad in scope.

It is through morals that individuals
become free to invest their time, intellect, and efforts...
and so, may start thinking of the future.

They may start working together and organizing
an efficient system of cooperating with...
and protecting, one another.

Without the framework of morals...
people would be filled with distrust...
and would be constantly at war with one another...
as certain groups would be preying on others freely.

You may also think of a society as one large living organism.
Morals are the cellular instructions which allow the smooth functioning
of all the systems in the organism.

When cells are allowed to go rogue...
you have cancer
(When morals are not followed).

When the body doesn't recognize itself...
it freely attacks that which serves a function...
and you have an autoimmune disease
(When ethics are not in alignment with morals).

Now...
take the first moral

'Everyone has the right to exist...
unless he attempts to unjustifiably take that right from another...
either through action, or through inaction.'...

and combine it with the essence of a couple of others:

'Everyone has the right to the fruits of his labors.'

'Everyone deserves respect and freedom of heart, mind, and body...
so long as he gives the same to all others'...

and you have a simple adage to live by...
one which covers so many morals:

Bonehead Adage #1:

'A moral man's sword cuts but one way...
in the act of assertion against aggression.'

Or...
if you would prefer:

Caveman Style:

'Violence not good or bad.
Assertion...good.
Aggression...bad.'

Or perhaps something with a little flair?:

Dramatic Prose Style:

'Force of Will and Violence are but tools.
Through Assertion...they become the sword of justice.
Through Aggression...they become the scythe of evil.'

:)

Meaning:

Violence is not intrinsically evil.
It must sometimes be used by the Assertor...
to protect against the Aggressor.

The difference between the actions of Assertion and that of Aggression...
is the difference between the one who has the virgin right...
and the one who tries to covet, enslave, or destroy.

So long as the actions were necessary...
and only the amount of force necessary was used to stop and/or subdue the aggressor...
or in the use of whatever force that was used or threatened to be used by the aggressor...
up to, and including, deadly force.

Why would I make this the first adage?

What about words of love...
or perhaps kindness...
or about anything warm and fuzzy?

Because...
nothing else would matter if one could not be assured of the virgin rights to:

His very life...
and those of his family

The accumulation of his efforts

Basic human respect and freedom

These lie at the first two very base levels of
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

Without these...
the individual would not even try...
societies would cease to function beyond the most rudimentary level.

By one knowing an individual has these virgin rights...
he would give basic respect to all...
and knowing that he is also an individual...
he could then be open to truly living his life...
knowing that he is also deserving of respect of heart, mind, and body...
and that he has the absolute right to be free from fear and oppression
through bullying in any form.

'Only a person free from fear...
is free to truly learn...and free to truly love.'

(look at that...another adage!  :)
