A Healthful Diet - A Japanese Super Food - Salmon Ochazuke

Song:  Home Sweet Home

Group:  Motley Crue

Shaq was not lying...
this unit works well.

I will go into this more...later on in the article.

For the sake of simplicity...
I break life into the three basic human categories...
the three which are affected by what we do...or do not do...
by our experiences...and so, our reactions to them...
the three which affect our basic drives...
the results of which guide our life...
each of which sets the rate, quantity...
and quality of everything
we experience in life.

The Physical

The Intellectual

The Emotional

One thing which must be understood...
throughout all of the systems in our body...
there exists a feedback loop (both positive and negative)...
without which...no adaptation would be possible.

The quantity of the quality of healthful input...
and our body's reaction to it...
is what leads to positive changes in our body, mind, and emotions...
and each of the three affects each of the others.

The focus of this article will be on the nutritious diet component.

It is with a high quality input of food into the physical...
that so much of life may be lived far longer...
and with much higher quality.

The Physical

When I talk of this...
it is all inclusive.

It is of anything involving the physical structure or of its components...
their actions or interactions (even on a molecular level)...
and the results of which are directly tangible.

I will not talk of any of the subcategories...
as it is the positive and healthful input
which will give us the positive and healthful results.

It is the quality of input which is what we are after...
as the healthful results will be a foregone conclusion...
within the realm of our genetic potential.

Once again...
the basic three of the physical...
so far as our actions which have the most impact:

A Nutritious Diet

Exercise

Deep Restorative Sleep

Nutritious Diet

I cannot over stress the value of the traditional Japanese and Mediterranean diets.

Each emphasize fish and grain / fruits and vegetables
(with poultry...and very moderate amounts of red meats and dairy products).

Before you think that the chief variable of the longevity of the Japanese people is genetic...
there have been actual long term comparative studies of native Japanese who live in Japan...
and of whom had continuously eaten a traditional Japanese diet...
(with a large enough sampling)...
as compared to those of whom had been initially raised in Japan...
but who had emigrated to the US and had changed their diet
to a typical American one.

They had found that once those people of Japan had eaten
the typical American diet...their lifespans had fallen to that of
the other typical Americans
(especially considering that some of the biggest killers of Americans
were the ones which had risen dramatically in those transplanted Japanese
...heart disease / cancer / diabetes).

The only major variable which had changed...was that of diet.

It was not a mere correlation.

Through this study...
a direct causation had been established.

While eggs are good in moderation...
the standard American breakfast is simply a saturated fat and sugar fest.

It leaves one feeling slow and lethargic...
in mind, as well as in body.

This type of diet not only turns its adherents into the shape of the Michelin man...
it slowly zombifies people from the inside out.

It slows the thought process...
and is a cause of general lassitude in the body and mind.

People eating a typical American diet become mere shadows of what they could be...
because of sapped drive due to heavy meals
demanding much of the blood supply being routed to the gut
for long periods of time...
which then makes those same people have a lack of energy and vitality
throughout much of the day.

One important point about the American diet.

One of the chief reasons for the large consumption of food
the typical American eats is because of the general lack of flavor.

Americans are flavor starved.

The feedback system of smell and taste are not stimulated enough
to correctly regulate appetite.

It takes a huge amount of flavorless food to sate the appetite.

As the mouth remains hungry...
the appetite stays on high as it constantly seeks enough stimuli to sate itself.

As a result...
large and frequent amounts must be consumed to satisfy the appetite.

The Japanese and Mediterranean diets are rich in nutrition and flavor.

The feedback system then becomes in synch with consumed calories.

Breakfast in America is an abomination.

Lunch and Supper are not much better.

Supper becomes especially unhealthful if you eat it too closely to bedtime
(don't eat at least 4-5 hours before bedtime...
and exercise and shower just before bedtime).

Once again...
a healthful diet is no good...
unless it is adhered to for a lifetime.

The keys to keeping it up for a lifetime?

1)  Make the nutritious...delicious.

2)  Make it affordable enough that you may eat it on a regular basis.

3)  Make the preparation of it simple enough so that
the effort involved will not be prohibitive to do so on a regular basis.

The Japanese people eat their particular diet because
they are an island nation with an abundance of fish
(they have the largest fishing fleet in the world)...
which is heavily supplemented with various vegetables and fungi...
and with rice being the staple grain.

They are masters of making various simple and healthful dishes...
which are so delicious...they are addictive.

Salmon Ochazuke

So...
this brings me to a Japanese Super Food which is easily prepared...
and has easy to get ingredients...here in the US:

Salmon Ochazuke.

Ochazuke is simply hot tea (usually green tea)...
poured over cooked rice...
and which usually has some seasonings added.

The meats may vary...
or it is often just consumed without meats.

It is highly digestible.

However...
it is the salmon version which is of particular concern for Americans.

The typical American diet is too low in the healthful cold water fishes...
the oils from which carry so much of their health benefits.

The salmon also gives high quality protein...
making the typical red meat protein redundant in much of the diet...
and so, allowing one to forego much of the red meat protein in one's diet...
in favor of fish.

This makes a perfect breakfast...lunch...or supper.

I love it with two large fillets of salmon crumbled on the rice...
and mixed in when hot water, and the seasoning packets, are poured over it.

We also use a premixed seasoning and powdered tea package (I use two - four )...
for ease of preparation...and for the absolutely delicious taste.

It is inexpensive...
and easily gotten at almost any Asian market...
or online.

You know when a meal hits the spot when you feel energized
for many hours after it is consumed.

After a large bowl of Salmon Ochazuke...
I feel energetic and fully sated for at least 8 hours.

I never have the slow lethargic feeling I get when I must consume
typical American breakfasts when we are on the road.

I guarantee you this...
after consuming a large bowl of Salmon Ochazuke...
you will feel like a caged tiger.

You will know it when songs such as the one in this article play in your head...
and you cannot help but walk to the beat...
and your emotions are riding high on the steady driving rhythms
and melodies of the guitars.

After eating a perfect meal...
you carry a song in your heart...
and everything in the world just feels right.

You are home...
home sweet home  :)

This is how I feel after I eat Salmon Ochazuke.

The energy you will feel all day long from such a meal...
the complete lack of digestive complaint...
the deep satisfaction of the meal staying with you...
nullifying any hunger for unhealthful foods...
is addictive.

After experiencing truly delicious foods...
your appetite will be reset towards healthful foods.

As you will not have the unhealthful cravings all day long...
you will not snack on the typically unhealthful American snacks.

With but one experience with Salmon Ochazuke...
I am sure you will wish to explore other Japanese foods.

After eating a truly nutritious and delicious meal...
the typical American diet will no longer appeal to you.

The typical American diet is what is slowly killing so many Americans early in life!

Red meats are used to supplement the vegetables when used.
They typically do not make up the bulk of the meal.

The Japanese are the masters of hot pot dishes (Nabemono).

While other countries have their own versions...
the Japanese are unique in that the ingredients are not mere carriers of the spices.

Japanese Nabes have subtle and light sauces which accentuate
the natural flavors of the ingredients.

The typical Japanese diet consists of a lot of vegetables and fish.

This is the key to the healthfulness of their diet.

First of all...
buy only wild caught salmon
(as opposed to farm raised).

We buy these fillets from our neighborhood Super Walmart.

While this package is only a pound...
I just bought 2 - two pound packages of fillets.

They also sell them in 3 lb. packages...
but they were out of those sizes.

Simply grill them with but a little salt and pepper.

A large amount may be made all at once
and kept in the refrigerator for use over many days.

Include a large sprout salad...
and BAM...
a perfect meal for anytime...
one which is very healthful...
and is so delicious...
you will always look forward to eating it again and again.

I love, and crave, Salmon Ochazuke
just as much as I love, and crave, the Tacos at UNR
(which are also healthful because of the way they make them).

We buy this at a local Asian market...Mackerel...another very healthful cold water fish.

Natto over rice with a side of Miso soup...
and with some grilled fish and some vegetables...
also makes a very healthful breakfast.

Kale is especially healthful.

My wife prepares this often eaten vegetable in our household...
using Japanese ingredients.

Alex loves it...
and I must admit...
it is delicious when prepared in this manner.

This particular brand of Greek style yogurt is especially delicious.

We also get it from Walmart
(We do almost all of our food shopping there.
The prices are the best...and surprisingly...frequently, so is the quality).

Now...
on to this Tens Therapy unit (about $25.00).

It electrically stimulates the affected area...
and it, in fact...
greatly lowers perceived pain.

A couple of decades ago...
I had rather severely injured the ligaments of my lower back
(doing one of the many stupid things I often did  :)...
and it has been a lingering problem with me ever since.

I tried this unit.

I was pleasantly amazed at the almost immediate...
and lasting pain relief I had received.

It is used for one session for approximately 30 minutes at a time.

Although I did not suffer from severe pain before I used it...
it was an almost ever present pain whenever I moved using certain motions.

I had to be careful with what I did in order to not lock up my lower back.

For anyone with old sports injuries...
never mind the creams and lotions...
try this unit
(or one of the many Tens units available).

Now...
back to a nutritious diet.

We are biological machines.

We would not put in low quality oils or fuels into our prized cars.

What we put into our bodies has profound effects on how well we operate.

Treat all sugary drinks as dessert (even artificially sweetened ones)...
only to be consumed on an infrequent basis...
on special occasions.

Purify your own water at home...
and drink it as the normally consumed beverage.

You cannot say you have truly lived life unless you live by the basic three of health.

We only have one life to live.

Never mind ideological concepts...
to not treat our bodies as the sacred temple it is...
is true sacrilege.

There is no true love in life...
without true respect.

You must truly respect yourself...
if you are ever to truly love yourself.

You must know true love and respect of self...
if you are ever to truly love another.

A true love of another is one of the most magical events in one's life.

You simply cannot respect yourself if you cannot win the battle
against the metaphorical inner demons of hedonism.

A disciplined man...will do the necessary...
regardless of the call of the inner demons.

An intelligent man makes the necessary...desirable...
so he never hears the call of the inner demons.

A healthful diet is necessary.

How you deal with adhering to one is your choice.

However...
if even a bonehead like me knows that making the necessary desirable
is the far superior way of living a healthful life...
there simply is no excuse for others to not also do so.

Find a way to make the nutritious...delicious.

This is the key to setting up life in all aspects...
through affirmation instead of negation.

Operate through positive addictions...
as opposed to punishment for negative habits.

You will then be drawn to a healthful life long diet
because its consumption and effects are pleasurable...
and it will then become an aspect of a fundamental drive...
the pursuit of pleasure...
and so, ensuring that you will stick to it.

  1. You have me hungering for ochazuke. I had it often growing up as a side dish to have with tsukemono after we finished the main dish. I never had it with salmon but it sounds delicious.

  2. Salmon Ochazuke is so satisfying, you will simply crave it often. It is so highly digestible, you will never feel bogged down or have the heaviness that one feels after a large meal of Western meats. It is especially good with an occasional side of spicy Kimchee.
