Alex At The 2015 Spring NNV Math Club Math Off

Song:  Classical Gas

Artist:  Mason Williams

We had arrived at the local high school early and waited for the others to arrive
for the 2015 Spring NNV Math Club Math Off public exhibition math
competition of some of the members of the NNV Math Club
against high achieving members of the public who specialize
 in the STEM fields.

This time...
the members of the public team consisted of Civil and Mechanical Engineers...
and a Software Programer.

This twice a year event is held as a fund raiser for the NNV Math Club to help pay
for their registration fees at the ARML Nationals held in Las Vegas every year.

This high school has its own theater for their high school Thespians.

Alex with some of the other members of the team.

Sherry Griffin being interviewed by a local TV crew just before the competition
(NNV Math Club Founder).

Sherry Griffin and a local TV news caster.
The news caster is an alumni of this particular high school...
and she is also a graduate of UNR.

This news caster did an exceptional job at keeping the audience
somewhat involved while the contestants worked on their math problems.

Alex and another member of the math circle were the life lines
for the groups in the later portion of the competition.

The groups were given one chance to call upon the life line 'experts'
to a particularly tough problem they could not solve...
and they then had the choice to accept one of the life line answers as their own.

The teams, of course, had waited till they had chosen a high dollar amount
and for a problem they could not solve...
before calling upon one.

The team competition was based on the game show, 'Jeopardy'.

Alex and the other member of the math circle...
as being the life line option...
had to work on each problem, fast and furiously...
in order to be prepared to give their answer in case one of the teams
had become stumped...
and had called upon one of them.

Alex was called upon as a life line by the NNV Math Team
when they had become stumped on a question.

Alex was excited to have been called...
and because in his voice and positive affirmation that he had the answer...
the NNV Math Team had confidence in his answer...
and had chosen to take his answer...
and Alex was correct.

During the final Math Jeopardy...
Alex was handed the pubic team's bet and answer...
while the other life line contestant had received the NNV Math Club's bet and answer.

In the end...
this time, the team of Engineers and Software Programmer...
had taken the competition.

All of the competitors are on stage for a group photo.

We were leaving after the competition.

One of the members of the audience was a named partner at her
accounting firm...and she was also a radio talk show host.

A company had agreed to match all funds received on this night...
up to $500.00...
so, hopefully...
the NNV Math Club will have raised enough for the ARML Nationals
coming at the end of May.

We, of course, had also contributed...
and there are also some other corporate sponsors...
so I belive they are in good shape.

As the ARML competition takes place over two days...
a large part of the registration fees are for the dorms at UNLV
for the competitors during the competition.

There are also the transportation costs to also factor in.

After the competition...
we went out to our favorite Chinese restaurant.

Their Hot and Sour Soup was delicious.

They also had appetizers...
of which, Alex only really likes the Foil Chicken...
so, my wife and I had given Alex our Foil Chicken appetizers.

Alex had the Shrimp Chow Mien...
my wife had the Mongolian Beef...
and I had the House Chow Mien.

Although all of our particular dishes were excellent...
I am going to order the Mongolian Beef next time.

It was so delicious...
the best I have ever had.

It was seasoned and prepared so well.

My wife and I had shared each of our dishes.

The Mongolian Beef had made my mouth water...
and I savored each bite.

The vegetables were crisp...
the beef tender...
the red chili peppers added just enough heat...
and the sauce held a deep flavor which made the wonderful flavors linger.

To top it all off...
their prices are very reasonable.

I am looking forward to our next meal here.

Alex also loves the food here.

We especially love their fresh squeezed lemonade.

Alex is presently preparing for another mid-term exam
in his Multivariable Calculus (Calculus III) class at UNR.

In another month...
Alex will be taking his final in this class.

Sometime after his finals...
and before the ARML Nationals...
we are planning a week long trip which will cover four states.

As Alex loves caves...
we will be going to see Carlsbad Caverns, NM.

As part of the other sights...
we will also see...
The Grand Canyon, AZ...
and White Sands, NM.

We will also possibly see the Petrified Forest...
the Painted Desert...
Barringer Crater...
and various other National and State parks.

We will also go to the Great Salt Lake in UT (our last stop before home)...
and hopefully...
Zion National Park...
and possibly more...
just before the Great Salt Lake.

After his Summer Semester at UNR...
we hope to go to the West Coast for a couple of days of driving North.

We have an exciting Summer planned for Alex.

I know he is going to especially love Carlsbad Caverns.

My parents had taken my sisters and I there when we were young.

We, as parents...
are going to make this another magical summer for Alex.

  1. What a fun competition! Great for Alex to participate as one of the life lines.

Looks like you have a great trip planned. I'll look forward to reading about your adventures. I, too, went to Carlsbad Caverns as a kid and would like to take my family there someday, as well as to the Great Salt Lake, Zion, and some of the other spots you mention. Should be awesome for Alex!

  2. The most experienced competitors were the lifelines and judges. Alex wanted to be on the team against the public, but the NNV Math Club founder was afraid if the children completely dominated the competition, no one would volunteer to compete from the public. So, she kept the strongest members off the team.

We are really looking forward to our trip. I know the highlight of the journey, for Alex, will be the caverns.
