Alex At The 2015 ARML Local At UNR

Song:  Come To Me High

Artist:  Rumer

Today was the ARML Local (Northern Nevada) to determine the placement
of the competitors on the team going to the ARML Nationals
in Las Vegas at the end of May.

The location for the local competition had gone through a last minute change.

We were waiting at the initial location
when one of the competitors notified us of the change.

So...
Alex and I walked to the new location.

The new location was at the Mines building
(one of the Engineering buildings).

We had just entered the building.

Sherry Griffin (NNV Math Club Founder)...
had arranged for three university volunteers to help run the competition.

The testing had taken place in a conference section of the building.

The competitors were initially broken up into three teams
for the first phase of the competition.

Shortly after the initiation of the competition...
as it would take a while...
I went outside and sat beneath the shade of the trees.

In a later phase of the competition...
they had taken a break and had gone back in to finish.

At the completion of the competition...
Sherry Griffin announced the results.

Alex was sad about the results.

Although he had made the team going to the Nationals...
he hadn't scored so high as he had hoped for.

Alex was especially kicking himself for a problem he had missed...
as he knew where he had gone wrong afterwards.

As I had told him on our drive home...
and as his mother had told him when we got home...
he needs to study for the ARML competition every day.

Alex has been concentrating on his other school work...
to finish early...which is good...
but it should not be to the exclusion of any one subject.

Even if a subject is only studied half an hour a day...
the important thing is to study it every day...without fail.

Alex will be setting aside some time every day for ARML practice.

Even when we go on our vacation...
Alex will be taking his laptop...
and in the hotel room at night...
he will be studying for the upcoming ARML Nationals competition.

Alex tends to spend hours on one subject at a time...
but only covering a portion of his classes per day.

He must devote time to each subject...each day.

Weekends...vacation...they do not matter.

What matters is that...
each subject is studied every day.

This keeps up the intellectual momentum...
and his studies will always be at the forefront of his mind.

Alex should do better at the ARML Nationals since he now has fewer classes to study for...
as he had finished some subjects already.

Although Alex's high school will finish near the the middle of June...
Alex will be finished with the rest of his classes a month early
(online high school allows a student to finish his classes early).

So long as he studies each subject everyday...
including for the ARML competition...
I am fine with that.

Anyway...
that is why I had chosen this song.

It is slow and slightly melancholy...
just as Alex feels today

(although Alex will be on the team going to the ARML Nationals...
he is upset that he hadn't performed much better at the ARML Local).

However...
Alex usually bounces back very quickly.

I know that he will be practicing for ARML more diligently from now on.

  1. I feel confident that Alex will re-dedicate himself to studying for the competition and that he will do quite well at ARML Nationals.

  2. He is studying many hours a day. He has some major finals coming up this, and next week. Alex should do better at the Nationals also.
