Alex's First Japanese Live Online Quiz

Alex's First Japanese Online Quiz

Just an hour ago...
I had taken this video of Alex at his study station from my iPhone.

On the computer screen...
the tester had put up sentences in English...
and Alex had to translate them to Japanese.

Alex has been taking an online Japanese class for one of his
online high school subjects for approximately 3 months now
(It is a class through Brigham Young University...
and for which Alex gets credit toward his online high school.
Just the exams are live).

This is a first year Japanese course.
Alex wants to finish this course half a year early (by January)...
so he may then take second year Japanese for next semester...
instead of waiting for 10th grade to take it.

Today, Alex had his first online Japanese Language Speaking Quiz.

Earlier in the quiz...
Alex had to name members of an extended family...
and he had to ask the tester some questions.

I started this video just on the last portion of the online quiz.

Alex has been translating basic English into one of the written forms
of Japanese (Hiragana) for a while.

He has also been reading Japanese books for children...
and practicing his conversational Japanese with his mother.

Alex has been very busy preparing for numerous upcoming exams...
and preparing for his finals at his high school...and at the University Of Nevada Reno.

His UNR Linear Algebra class has its final in a little over a week.

For the remainder of his classes...
he has less than two weeks before their finals.

Alex has been on his computer everyday...
diligently preparing himself.

For his next semester...
we are not going to allow him to load himself up with 10 classes in total...
as he had done this semester.

However...on a lighter note...
just yesterday, I was able to get Alex registered
at UNR for a Calculus III class for the Spring Semester.

As Alex has never formally taken Calculus I/II
(just as part of our homeschool curriculum)...
I had to get a waiver from the head of mathematics at the University.

Although we had gotten one last Summer
in order for him to take his other math classes
(Probabilities and Statistics / Linear Algebra)...
a new person had taken over as the math department head...
and so, I had to provide supporting evidence for another waiver.

This shall be the last time he will need a waiver to take more advanced math...
as Calculus III is the prerequisite for the next step up.

His Calculus III class will be four days a week...
and early in the morning.

Alex will be reviewing his Calculus over the winter vacation
so he will be fully prepared for the Spring Semester.

After he completes Calculus III, Alex wishes to take Logic
(this will involve symbolic logic and a lot of mathematical proofs).

Alex says that the Logic class will really give him a firm grounding
in mathematical proofs, of which will really help him
in the many advanced math courses which will follow Logic...
as well as for many of his future mathematical competitions.

Alex also has another major exam this Saturday.

He is looking forward to...
and very excited about, taking it.

Alex's drive to learn is just so satisfying to see.

As I have told him many times before...
he is on the correct path in life.

  1. Enjoyed seeing the video of Alex taking his Japanese quiz. He is coming along rapidly. I'm sure his mother is very happy with the progress he is making, and looking forward to having conversations with him in Japanese.

  2. Alex is looking forward to being able to speak to his grandparents in Japan... when we go in another year.

His mother has been practicing with him. Both, she and I, are very pleased with Alex's progress.
