Alex Watches 'The Empire Strikes Back'

The Empire Strikes Back Soundtrack

Composer:  John Williams

We started out the day after Alex finished his studies.

We decided to drive around the neighborhood
to see if the Autumn colors were in full display.

As it has been unseasonably warm the last couple of weeks...
the colors are late...and so we must try again in a week or two.

We then ate out...went on our nightly walk...showered...
and then settled in to see...'The Empire Strikes Back'.

However, first...the failed attempt to see Autumn colors in the neighborhood.

Most trees were just starting to turn colors...
but weren't quite there yet.

Although this house was quite a ways down the hill side from us...
it still had some nice views.

This particular house was getting ready for Halloween.

After a disappointing search for Autumn colors in our neighborhood...
we went back home...and a few hours later...
we went back to our favorite Chinese / Vietnamese restaurant.

This is our favorite Chinese restaurant in Reno.

Alex started out with his favorite appetizer...Pot Stickers.

He then had Shrimp Chow Mien.

Alex loved this dish...as did his mother.

I started with some Hot and Sour soup.

I then had a small appetizer plate of an egg roll...a crab rangoon...and a foil chicken.

I then had the House Chow Mien
(Beef / Pork / Chicken / Shrimp)...
and some Pork Fried Rice.

My wife had to do some shopping on the way home.

After relaxing for a while at home...
Alex and I went on our walk and then showered...
and we then settled in for the movie.

The only wide scale battle took place on Hoth...
a frozen desolate world.

I had explained to Alex about how a toy company had made almost all of the ships
and battle bots used on Hoth...shortly after this movie came out.

Luke undergoing his Jedi training under the tutelage of Yoda...
the Jedi Master.

Yoda

"Do...
or do not...
there is no try".

This was probably the favorite line for many fathers to their sons
after this movie had come out
(and in their best Yoda voice :)

The cloud city.

The battle scene between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.

Darth Vader trying to convince Luke to join him.

After Luke was defeated by Darth Vader...
Darth Vader spoke those immortilized words...
"No...I am your Father".

(incorrectly quoted by so many as..."Luke...I am your Father"...even to this day...
although, I think this way would have been even more powerful).

This was Alex's favorite part.

Although this was a powerful revelation...
I was hoping Alex's favorite part was when Yoda was training Luke.

He talked of patience...
of not allowing yourself to be ruled by hate...
and of good over evil.

As we had gotten a late start (almost midnight)...
we didn't finish the movie until 2 AM.

Later tonight...
we will finish up the trilogy with...
'Return of the Jedi'.

  1. So did Alex enjoy both movies as much as you did? Since he enjoys science fiction, I was curious to see if his reaction was as exuberant as you might have been hoping for.

These first two Star Wars movies are my favorites. I love The Empire Strikes Back especially. Yoda's wisdom is really a highlight of the film.

  2. Alex always suppresses his emotions, so it is hard to tell how excited he is about something. However, he is looking forward to tonight's showing of the final episode of the trilogy.

The portion with Yoda was also my favorite.
