Alex Gives A Mathcounts Presentation At Coral Academy Of Science

Alex's former Mathcounts teacher from 8th grade
had emailed me and asked if Alex would be willing to give a presentation
to her Mathcounts class at his old middle school (Coral Academy of Science).

Alex was excited to be able to tell other students about the Mathcounts competition.
As I have already stated...Alex is this year's Nevada State Mathcounts Champion.

Alex talked of the structure of the contest itself...
the types of math problems...
and of the strategy of test taking (efficiency of time usage)...
to help this year's Mathcounts competitors prepare for their
competition early next year.

The teacher in the picture (Mrs. Guncu) was Alex's Mathcounts coach when he had taken
1st place in the State in the 8th grade.

She is rightfully proud of Alex.

 No one before Alex...
in the history of Coral Academy of Science (Reno)...
had ever made it to the Mathcounts Nationals
(the top four individuals in the State)...
and Alex had taken it one step further by taking first place in the State of Nevada
(Alex is wearing his Nationals competition shirt).

There were more students in the class...
and as guys tend to do...
they were sitting farther back  :)

Mrs. Guncu is a very nice lady who carries herself with respect...
and she treats all of the students with respect.

We promised her that Alex will be rooting for the team
at the Chapter Mathcounts competition...
and if the team makes it to the State level...
we will also be cheering them on there as well.

He talked about Algebra, Geometry, Combinatorics, Probability...
and Number Theory.

Alex talked for the whole 50 minutes...
including a short question and answer period.

Although Alex had done well with his presentation...
I told him that had he outlined his presentation ahead of time...
it would have made for an even better presentation
(he went into too much problem detail sometimes).

After Alex's presentation at Coral Academy of Science...
we then drove to the North Star campus so he could take a final exam for one of his classes.

Although Alex hadn't gotten so high on his final as we had hoped...
he still got an 'A' in the course...with plenty of room to spare.

Alex is now watching another segment of Professor Benjamin's DVD with his mother.

Hopefully...
tomorrow we will have time to go shooting.

However, we also must do some other activities...
so we may put it off for a few more days.

However, if we are to do it...
it must be soon, as the weather is rapidly turning colder...
and our shooting area in the mountains is unsheltered.

One good thing is that the rattlesnakes and scorpions will be
far less active this time of year  :)

(although Alex will still wear his rattlesnake proof chaps...
just in case).

  1. Knowing how much Alex loves to teach math, I'm sure he really enjoyed the opportunity to go back to his old school and give advice to this year's team. Very nice of his old teacher to invite him back.
