Alex At The NNV Math Club 2014 MATH - OFF

Song:  Game Day

Artists:  The Piano Guys

(I took this from the McQueen High School parking lot).

Today was a great day for Alex.

His Sunday math club (NNV Math Club) put on a mathematical exhibition / competition
at a local High School (near to our home) as a fund raiser for future
distant math competitions.

Channel 2 News video recorded the event.

The theme was...
Are you smarter than a 9th grader?

It involved two phases...
the first one was a countdown round (Mathcounts style).

It involved four members of the math club going head to head
in quick calculation and problem solving.

They had scratch paper and pencils...
but no calculators.

They had buzzers in front of them as two members at a time went head to head.

The second phase was five other members of the team
going head to head with a five member team of professionals from the community...
and each team working on the problems together and answering them as a team.

We arrived early and looked around the theatre (theater)
where the competition would be held.

Sherry Griffin - the founder and chief instructor of the NNV Math Club.

Channel 2 News recorded the event and had Sherry give an initial interview
on the NNV Math Club.

The channel 2 news camera man just prior to the competition.

Alyx Sacks (left) is a Channel 4 news anchor and she was the event's moderator.
It is interesting to note that Alyx Sacks went to McQueen High School...
and she had interned at Channel 4 while a student at McQueen.

Sherry Griffin was going over the event before the competition started.

The first event was the Countdown Round where individuals went head to head
in a lightning fast competition of speed problem solving and calculation.

Alex (left) and his competitor were first up.
They went head to head for the best of three questions.

Things happen so quickly that a competitor often answers before anyone in the audience
even has a chance to fully read the problem.

Alex quickly answered all three questions in a row and moved to the final round.

The next two competitors went head to head.

Both of these tenth graders are very experienced...
and all of Alex's competitors in the Countdown round
are from the Davidson Academy.

Alex and these two were on the same math team which had competed
at the UC Berkeley math competition last time...
and all three are on the same team competing
in the Harvey Mudd / Caltech math competition next month
(a high school math competition).

The young man on the left was particularly quick tonight...
and he had won his round...
all three questions in a row.

So...
for the final competition...
it was the winner of the previous round...and Alex.

Alex (right) had clinched the win by answering very quickly and accurately...
all three in a row.

Alex calculates problems at a tremendously rapid rate...
but then again, that is to be expected...
Alex is the 2014 Nevada State Mathcounts Champion :)

After the event...
a number of parents went up to me and commented
on the lightning quickness of Alex's calculations.

Alex said that he naturally sees patterns in math problems
which point to quick solutions.

It was then up to the rest of the NNV Math Club members to take on
some members of the public in the team round
(no calculators allowed).

The members of the public included...
a Channel 2 News Meteorologist...
a Real Estate Land Developer...
a Senior Risk Consultant with an undergraduate degree in Engineering
and with a Post Graduate degree in Finance and Accounting...
a Math and Science teacher at a charter high school...
and a UNR Professor of Economics.

Alex relaxed after his competition was over...
and he watched his team members take on the members of the public.

At first...
the NNV math club would be ahead...
then it tied up...
and over and over this scenario played itself out until...
NNV math club pulled strongly ahead and won.

After the competition...
Sherry once again made some announcements...
and that had concluded the night of fun.

We then decided to eat at Alex's favorite Mexican restaurant.

Alex had his favorite dish at this restaurant...
fried Tilapia.

My wife had the steak and shrimp fajitas.

I had the sea food fajitas.

We waited until the 11 o'clock news to see how much time Channel 2 News
had dedicated to this event.

I was disappointed in that it was only a 30 second brief on the event...
and they only showed a brief shot of the team event...
they didn't even show Alex's Countdown Round  :(

I think the news should have dedicated a whole 5 - 10 minute segment to the event...
complete with interviews of many of the competitors...
and they should have put in at least Alex winning the Countdown Round...
but then again...
I am biased  :)

Alex is taking a final exam in one of his high school classes tomorrow
(for all of the exams...Alex must take them at the North Star test center)
but before he does that...
Alex will be giving a presentation at his old middle school in the morning
(Coral Academy of Science).

His eighth grade Mathcounts coach asked if Alex would
give a talk to this year's Mathcounts class at the school...
and if he would then launch into a question and answer
period for the students afterwards.

He was very happy to have been asked.

Alex will be wearing his Mathcounts Nationals competition shirt
for the presentation tomorrow.

I will be there taking photos...of course  :)

  1. Looks like Alex and his teammates put on a great show. Nice that the team beat a fairly accomplished public team even without Alex's help on that portion. Shows how good that team is.

  2. Mrs. Griffen purposely kept some of the strongest members off of the team round. She didn't want to scare them away from next year's contest. She put one very strong member on the team...and the rest did Alex's round...and the oldest member was the judge.
