Alex Learns Two Lessons In 'First Knight'

Movie scene from 'First Knight'
(contains spoiler)

This has been a favorite movie of mine since it came out
almost 20 years ago.

It is the timeless tale of Camelot
with the focus being on Lancelot and his love for Guinevere...
and Guinevere's love for Lancelot and for King Arthur.

I will list the reasons I wanted Alex to see this particular movie
later in the article.

Lancelot (Richard Gere)...
a free hearted man with nothing to live for except himself...
until he found love in a woman...
and the concept of Camelot.

Through these...
he began to truly live.

Guinevere (Julie Ormand)...
a woman torn between two loves...
a great romantic one...
and a mature caring one.

King Arthur (Sean Connery)...
a King who had built a city on the concept of service to others...
and Honor through Justice.

Maleagant (Ben Cross)...
a power drunk predator who commands
an army of immature males who know nothing
of Justice and who live only to feed their hedonistic values.

Although I don't know much about the actor (Ben Cross)...
I do know that he must have had extensive experience in the theater arts.
His ability to project his voice and his motions I have only seen in
Shakespearian actors from England.

They are highly trained and almost unparalleled in acting ability.

King Arthur feeling deep betrayal and anguish
as he ponders how to proceed in his actions.

A dying King who finally experiences the love he had craved...
as made possible through his forgiveness.

Only after...
  we have a nice dinner...
go on our nightly walk...
have a hot shower...
and then lie in nice comfortable surroundings...
do we watch the movies.

The order of the pre-movie activities...
as well as the setting of the movie room...
all have a purpose.

A nice meal sates the body's primary drive...
allowing the secondary drives to come to the forefront.
It keeps the mind from being distracted...
from being pulled back to reality once engrossed
in the emotional tide of a movie.

Our nightly walk...
in conjunction with the after walk hot shower...
calms the mind and body
and makes the mind open to suggestion...
which allows for far more emotional connection with the characters.

It has to do with raised biochemical and neurochemical output
(I have no real knowledge of this area...
I am merely passing on what I have read
in medical research papers).

I can only personally attest to the greatly positive effects I experience by doing so.
(As I assume I am no different from others...
what I do to heighten the senses...
others may also do for the same results).

I keep my man cave at a very comfortable 66 - 68 degrees (F)...
the wide screen is at the foot of my bed...
there are numerous pillows to prop up our bodies to a comfortable viewing angle...
and we watch from beneath a light comforter.

To have a workout which is between 30 to 60 minutes long...
and which is kept at a level to just this side of nausea
(depending on your fitness level and the intensity of the exercise)...
clears the body of all stress and increases physical sensations...
frees the mind of all negative thoughts and increases the positive...
and greatly heightens the emotional responses.

To experience the cleansing of a hot shower afterwards...
you then feel the excitement that an infant feels
as his mind absorbs everything in his environment
with great pleasure and wonder.
Everything is new and exciting.

Psychologically it also matters.
When you have earned something...
it greatly increases in value to you.

You will have earned your pleasure to come.

Your reward is the emotionally engrossing movie or drama...
and the greatly heightened sensations it will bring forth
in your then, thoroughly primed mind and body.

It matters greatly.

You don't believe me?

Try a thorough workout and shower before rewarding yourself
with a highly charged drama or movie.

Don't forget the cool environment coupled with a light comforter  :)

As it is summer...
Alex has extra time on a daily basis.
I use the extra time to show Alex examples of the morals and values
which lead to ultimate happiness in life...
and the antithesis of these...
and the destructive path of those who lead
a hedonistic life style...
through specifically picked movies and dramas.

In the movie, 'First Knight'...
I wanted to show Alex examples of:

Honor through Justice

Love over Hatred

Honor though Justice

I want to ensure Alex knows that Honor is not something which
may be bestowed upon a person.

It can only be earned through his just actions.

A person cannot fight for honor...
he may only fight for justice...
and it is his pure hearted actions which then earn him honor.

It makes a difference.

Many people think that fighting for honor is synonymous
with being stubborn...with never backing down...
regardless of what is just.

If a person fights primarily for his social standing...
or for the temporarily good feeling of defeating an opponent...
if it is for any other reason than because it is for justice...
then it is not honorable.

If there is not great risk to the person fighting for justice...
there is no honor.

Only with a selfless heart guiding the just actions
which are done at great personal risk...
or great personal sacrifice...
does a person earn honor.

In this movie...
there are numerous examples of honor.

Love over Hatred

I had also explained that although in the end...
King Arthur had chosen love and forgiveness over hatred...
an even greater example would have been if he had
released Guinevere from her marriage to him...
and had then sent Lancelot and her to live out their lives
happily in her old kingdom.

This would have freed King Arthur to seek out true love with someone new.

True love is not selfish.

However, in the end...
he had demonstrated this well.

Tomorrow night...
I am going to show Alex another movie
with similar moral themes...
'The Last Samurai'.
