Alex's Saturday Sports Day - Racket Sports / Kicking Sports Skill Day

Song:  Amazing Journey

Group:  The Who

Today was the Racket Sports / Kicking Sports skill day.

We started out with Badminton to improve his eye-hand coordination using a racket.

At first, Alex couldn't hit the shuttlecock with the racket.

However, within a short period of time...
he was able to serve using the racket...
and a short while later...
he was able to return some serves of mine.

We hadn't gotten to the point of being able to rally
(sustained back and forth volleys)...
but that will come at a later time
(this picture was the result of a short serve from me :)

We could only play for a short amount of time...
as the wind started to pick up...
so we switched to kicking drills.

Alex did well with his kicking drills.
We started out fairly close while kicking the ball back and forth
to each other...and we gradually extended the distance.

Poor Alex...
I sometimes kicked it too hard and sent the ball over his head  :)

Yes...
we are using a Volley Ball as a Soccer Ball  :)

After our session at the park...
we went home to eat dinner...
after which we returned to the park for some
long distance night flyer throwing fun.

We could only see the other when we were holding the lit disc.

The person throwing had to launch to where the person was...
by estimating his location from where he had last thrown.

As our distance from each other increased...
it became more difficult to place our shots accurately...
but it became more fun...
and the amount of exercise we got...
increased as the number of errant throws increased.

We simply could not be sure of the exact location of each other.

We left the park at around 10 PM...
and went home to shower.

The rest of the night was spent just relaxing at home.

This last picture reminded me of the movie 'Tommy'.

I had first seen it almost 40 years ago
(I still love the movie...and the music).

In one scene from the movie...
the father is holding a ball of light (2:17 of the included music video)...
and it looks something like the lit disc that Alex is holding...
well...close enough :)

Although Alex hadn't had to overcome the difficulties
that the main character had to in the movie (deaf, mute, blind)...
it has been an amazing journey that Alex has been on...
one which he shall continue to trek...
and one I shall continue to log.

Although so many of Alex's accomplishments seem so amazing to us...
we know that it is almost all because of Alex's efforts.

We are merely his guide.

He is walking his path with the commitment and fortitude of a warrior.

The amount of self direction and pure drive he exhibits
as he strives towards his goals always deeply impresses me...
and always fills me with great satisfaction.

He strives forth without fear or trepidation.

In everything he does...
he tries with an open heart full of sustained effort...
and with a committed heart which simply won't quit.

However, don't think that Alex doesn't thoroughly enjoy
what he does, or that he doesn't enjoy life.

He loves life deeply...
and he enjoys everyday...
and everything...including his studies
(he only gets grouchy when he cannot have some free time and solitude to recharge...
when he has had little sleep...or in hot and humid conditions).

Under hot and humid conditions especially...
both he and I get very grouchy
(We both eat a lot of food...
and have high metabolic rates...
and so, we produce a large amount of heat as a result.
So, in conditions where our heat is not dissipated rapidly and easily...
we get very uncomfortable...
so we are at our best in higher altitudes...
and in cooler to cold conditions).

Above all, Alex loves learning...
and he loves seeing progress in his life.

He knows that life is not truly lived
unless one strives for one's greatest dreams.

For only then...
can you consider yourself to be on...
an amazing journey.

And when one is on an amazing journey...
all of life is beautiful
(future, present, and past).

P.S. :  This is nothing profound.

It is simply a subtle shift in thinking
which can produce profound improvements in a person's life.
It is simply running towards a loved and treasured goal.

By running towards a goal...
you run towards everything beautiful in life.

Once you have a sacred goal in life...
you no longer let fear run your life...
you no longer run from anything in life...
not even failure.

Failure is seen as a temporary condition...
one which burns with a fire which shall further temper your steel...
and so, to make you even better once overcome
( a learning opportunity...a temporary weakness identified...
a new area for improvement...a new obstacle to conquer...
and so, a greater person you are to be).

You are simply focused on your goal.

With progress seen...
all the doors open up...
and new horizons present themselves.

This will provide the ever increasing fuel for further progress
(emotional rewards)...
and the victories along the way further reinforces...
further striving (success begets success).

  1. Badminton is not easy, especially on a windy day. It has been a long time since I played but it was the most fun when we had our whole family out there as with more people it was more likely that the shuttlecock would come near someone.

That night flyer disc looks really fun! I've never tried it but it looks wild! Good thing you found a nice wide open area to play.

  2. Alex picked up on using the racket fairly easily. We are going to have fun with it in the future. The Night Flyer is great. It is ultra stable in flight, and night throwing takes it to a whole new level. It is great fun!
