Alex At The 2014 ARML Nationals - I

We had left Reno in the afternoon to reach Las Vegas at around 10 PM.

We were on our way to the 2014 ARML Nationals.

It is a prestigious High School Mathematical contest...
which is actually a world wide contest
(Although Alex is still in middle school...
there were quite a few very advanced middle schoolers in this competition).

There were top high school teams from China (last year's reigning world champions)...
and from many other places in Asia...
along with other teams throughout many other parts of the world.

ARML takes place in four different parts of the USA at the same time.
European teams participate on the East Coast of the US.

Alex's math team competed in the Western Region.
The Western Region has the best teams in, not only the nation, but the world.

Last year, the team out of the San Francisco bay area had taken the top team in the US.

The team from China had taken first in the world.

Although everyone is competing with each other at the same time...
it was an honor to actually be in the same room as the best teams in the world...
as are the ones at the Western Region of ARML.

This is at about the 1/4 way point of an approximately 8 hour drive south to Las Vegas.

We are checking in at South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
We had arrived a day early to get rested before the first phase of the competition
which would take place on the evening of the next day.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable...
and very reasonably priced.

In the hotel...
there is a restaurant called Zenshin.

It is a mostly Japanese restaurant.
We can tell that the chef's are from Japan.

There are many Japanese restaurants which simply don't
compare to the ones in Japan.

However...
this one had very good...
and genuinely delicious, Japanese food.

We had eaten almost all of our meals here during our stay.

My dessert...
Banana Foster Lumpia.

Alex's...
Green Tea Tiramisu.

My wife's...
Young Coconut Bread Pudding.

During the late afternoon at UNLV...
the Northern Nevada Math Team had pizza for a snack.

As Alex had already eaten before his arrival...
we had just sit in a different area during their meal.

Shortly after eating...
the team then moved to the first phase of the competition...
the team rounds.

It was but a short walk to the classrooms specifically designated for each team.

Each room team had their own proctor...
and there were no calculators allowed.

The team after they had finished their initial testing.

The team then went to another building for a presentation.

This is the Student Union Ballroom.

This is where the rest of the competition would be held on the following day.

The teams grabbed a quick snack...
and then decided to go back to the dorms.

We headed back to our hotel to grab a late night dinner of
one and a half pounds of King Crab...
each.

We would have to wake up early on the next day for the final phase
of the competition.

In the next article...
I shall cover the final day of the competition.
