Alex's 2014 Patriot's Pen Local Win

)

Song:  Try To Keep Up

Artist:  Elijah Bossenbroek

Today, on the way home from school...
I took Alex to a local Mexican eatery.

As this evening's schedule would be disrupted
because of an award ceremony for Alex's first place placement
at the local level in the Patriot's Pen contest...
I decided to take him out to have a large lunch so he wouldn't get hungry...
in case at the awards ceremony, he wouldn't find anything to his liking.

Alex had his favorite...
fried Tilapia.

I had a beef Torta and a couple of Tacos (Carnitas - shredded pork).

The ceremony took place starting at 7:00 PM at the local
Veterans of Foreign Wars building.

Alex getting his first place award.

As a first place winner...
he read aloud his essay.

As the hall was filled with veterans...
and they really liked his essay...
they had given him a standing ovation
(his essay is later in this article).

When the veterans stood and enthusiastically applauded Alex...
that was when I started to tear up.

It was not an obligatory standing ovation...
these veterans stood out of respect for what Alex's essay said to them...
and the applause was energetic...and from the heart.

It takes a lot to impress these guys.

One young vet came by to shake Alex's hand.
He said he really liked his speech...
and that it was in essence...
what lies in the hearts' of veterans.

The girl (black sweater) next to Alex, took third place.
The girl next to her had taken second place.
The man in the suit who is standing second from the left, was teacher of the year.

This year was unique.
Not only were the first, second, and third places all from Alex's school...
they are all from the same class (8th grade honors class).

Also, the teacher of the year was from Alex's school...
Coral Academy of Science (High School).

This is Alex's essay:

Although Alex's essay hadn't done so well as last year's
(Alex took second place in the State last year)
he still had done a good job with it.

It sure spoke to the hearts' of the veterans.

Alex's local first place win.

He had also gotten $150.00 for his placement.

Over the past 2 years...
Alex's winnings from essay contests totals
nearly $1,000.00.

I set up a special bank account for Alex last year
so he may cache his winnings for later on.

Well...
right now...
Alex is gearing up for the State Mathcounts finals...
this Saturday.

The following weekend...
Alex will be competing in a High School level math competition...
at a University in California.

The week after...
he will be competing in the Western Regional Science Fair
(his Science teacher confirmed Alex's project to be in this...
the next tier of competition).

We are going to have to rearrange his science presentation board
to make it more concise, and we will include his apparatus.

His science teacher made some recommendations...
one of which was to not focus so much on the mathematical presentation so much...
as many will not understand the full impact of his mathematical computations.

Alex is excited about the coming events...
and he will be facing very fierce competition in all of these contests.

I just had to purchase a better camera for myself...
so I may be able to better capture these...
and all future events.

It should arrive tomorrow  :)

And yes...
I do recommend buying first...
and explaining to the wife afterwards  :)

Although, in response...
she had decided to get a top tier Kindle for herself...
so...all quiet on the home front  :)

Alex is still writing his novels in his spare time.

I had started editing his first novel...
but he had some inconsistancies and he will have to do some revision
of his rough draft before I can edit further.

In the meantime...
he is writing more novels
(Alex is now writing Science Fiction novels.
He is presently working on his second Sci Fi novel...
and, as of yet, unsure if it will eventually become a trilogy  :)

  1. I think the veterans appreciated that someone so young could capture their feelings so well. Well done, Alex!

All of these competitions will be great experience for Alex. I look forward to hearing all about them, and seeing the photos from the new camera. :)

  2. All of the veterans were combat veterans...and as such...are ardent patriots. I think they had felt heartened by Alex's speech, as so many of today's youth don't realize the vital importance the Constitution and the Bill Of Rights play in today's society.

I hope to be able to take much better shots from afar with the new camera.

Alex is looking forward to the competitions. I hope to be able to relay good news from the contests.
