Alex At The 2014 Chapter Mathcounts Competition

Song:  World Of Dreams

Alex outside the Davidson Mathematics And Science Center
on the campus of the University of Nevada Reno.

This was this year's site for the Chapter competition of Mathcounts.
There are two chapters in the State of Nevada...
Northern and Southern.

Alex competed in the Northern Chapter for the individual and school rights to
advance to the State Finals (in four weeks).

There were 21 schools which had sent their teams and individuals
 to this Chapter's elimination.

There were a total of 161 competitors...
all of whom had earned the right to compete on this day...
by being the best at their particular school.

We had arrived early and had gone into a cafe in the building.

The Davidson Mathematics and Science Center was opened in 2010...
for the students of the University of Nevada Reno.

(Coral Academy of Science - Reno)

and his AMC 8 and 10 teacher (picture right).

They are a husband and wife team from his school.

Alex talking with three other members from his Sunday ARML math club
(All three are from the Davidson Academy.
The young man with the hat was last year's Mathcounts number one winner
in the Northern State competition...and he had taken 3rd in the State
(Alex was number 2 for Northern Nevada...and 6th in the State).

This year, the young man in the hat is in 9th grade...
and so, could no longer compete in Mathcounts (it is for grades 6 through 8).

The other two young men were in this year's competition with Alex.

After 3 separate rounds of testing...
(Alex standing)
the top eight individuals went on to a fun round with the parents in attendance
(not counted toward advancement).

Alex had lost the first round of eliminations of the Countdown Round.

Alex had made some simple miscalculations...
and I am sure he had mentally kicked himself for them
because he had actually done very well during last year's State Finals Countdown round
(second place).

However, as this was just for fun...
the individual and team awards followed this event.

For the actual placements from the written competition scores...
out of 161 contenders...
Alex had taken 2nd place.

Do you see the first place winner (stage left)?

This young man is in 6th grade.
He is truly a mathematical wizard.

Although Alex has a good chance at making the State team going to the Nationals...
he has strong competition...
not only from the first place winner (on left)...
and from the third through fifth place winners here
(all three of whom are Davidson Academy students)...
but there are also some extremely bright students from the Las Vegas area.

In the State Finals coming up next month...
Alex will have to really perform well if he is to earn a spot on the State team.

The talent out there this year shall be fierce.

However, don't think that Alex won't try for number one...
or that he doesn't stand a chance to earn the top spot.

The State Final's questions are more difficult.

Right now, it is anyone's game.

Alex is going to try his little heart out...
of that, I have no doubt.

-----------

Alex at the 2014 State Mathcounts Finals:

The team from the Davidson Academy took first place.
They had also taken first place in the State last year.

They are always the school to beat in the Northern chapter.
It is a tremendous school filled with exceptional students.

The team in the black shirts is Billinghurst Middle School (right)...
and they had taken third place.

Alex's school had taken second place (Coral Academy of Science - Reno).

These three school teams shall advance to the State Finals...
along with the top 15 individuals.

Alex with his two second place awards...
individual and team.

Alex got to pick his restaurant of choice for his lunch after the competition.

We ended up going to one of our favorite Sushi restaurants.

When we got home...
although I had given Alex the choice of how he would like to spend the rest of his evening...
he had simply chosen to relax at home...
no movies...no bowling...
he just wanted some solitude.

No problem...
he had earned the rest of the day off
to spend in any fashion he so wished.

 Tomorrow...
he will be working on a long term English project...
and he will be going to his Sunday ARML math club practice.

As for today...
we are all tired...
as we had gotten up early for this event.

However...
we shall all rest easily...
as Alex had really performed well...
and most importantly...
he is steadily improving.

  1. Another outstanding performance by Alex. I'm sure he will do very well in the State competition as well. Congratulations, Alex! (That sushi looked like a very appropriate reward for such an achievement... looks delicious!)

  2. Alex is busy everyday studying. He has the State Finals in less than a month. He knows how many others are gunning for one of the top four spots in the state. We are also waiting for the AMC 10 results. Hopefully Alex had done well enough to be invited to a higher league competition. It is for gifted 10th graders...but Alex may have scored high enough. We will have to see. If not...he has another 2 years he may compete in the AMC 10...and there is also the AMC 12 :)

  7. I don't know about the 6th grader...but I know this young man is extremely good.
I won't reveal Alex's score until after the State competition...you are one of his competitors :)
