Song:  Kefka's Theme (Orchestrated)

Original Composer:  Nobuo Uematsu

Rendition:  Unknown

This is the tenth article on Bill Gates' 11 rules for school children.

Bill Gates'....

Rule #10 - Television is NOT real life.  In real life, people actually
have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

My perspective:

I do not fully agree with this rule.

Ok...
I am going to go sideways here.

In this article...
forward can mean backward...
and backward can mean forward...
depending on the story depicted.

In general...
things which are especially evil...
are not a depiction of reality on an everyday wide scale.

The News and other shows which are designed to shock...
cause fear, to be so abnormal that it titillates us to watch...
can only affect us in such a manner because it is abnormal.
Were it normal...it would not titillate us.

In general...
things which speak of love, friendship, courage...etc...
are popular because they speak to the common feelings in most of us.
So, in the instances of good...shows are real.

So, in fact...
comic books, fantasy movies, great love stories...etc...
are far more true to life than the daily news.

Fantasies are merely tales set in fantastic settings.
Fantasies speak directly to our hearts...
of what we hope to have...
in each of our lives.

They are about our, as of yet, unfulfilled desires and dreams.

They depict how, through extraordinary efforts...
we may each have extraordinary lives.

They, most of all...
teach us to broaden our horizons...
to give us higher dreams for which to reach...
and they tell us that if one may do so...
so may others.

This is reality...
that which we make.

Now...
what is not real life...
is when characters depicted in stories
get what they want merely because they desired it...
without putting in the extraordinary effort to get it.

Dreams are nothing if directed action toward the achievement
of the dreams are not taken...and adhered to...
until fruition is achieved.

Time is also not generally factored in on TV.

Things usually happen far more readily than would happen in real life
simply because as the actors don't age to match the results...
the results must happen far more quickly than that which is realistic.

I know what I am stating is the obvious...
however, a child may not necessarily think in this manner.

Now...
for all who think that what we watch...
that which we read...does not affect us...
especially as children...

well...

how is it that we learn anything at all?

That which they learn is acceptable...
is accepted.

Does this mean that all violence is evil.

OF COURSE NOT.

Aggressive actions are born of evil.

Assertive actions are born of courage, justice, and all that is good.

Violence by the aggressive is evil.

Violence against the aggressive, when necessary, is good and right.

A problem arises when aggressive violence is depicted as heroic
or in anyway as that which is desirable.

Another problem arises when assertive violence is depicted as
something that which is wrong.

To say that all violence is wrong is to pretend that there is
no such thing as a rationale.

It is to say that a mere correlation is directly causative.

It is to say that intent has no meaning.

What it is...
is the difference between self defense and murder.

Simply put...
any aggressive action or inaction...
is evil.

Any assertive action is good.

--------------

Any show which glorifies deferred gratification (as they should)...
and shows the long term harm of immediate gratification...
is good...and realistic.

Shows which do not depict this as the desirable path in life...
are not realistic...or desirable for children to watch.

How so?

It is through deferred gratification that success in anything is achieved.

The antithesis of deferred gratification is immediate gratification.

It is through immediate gratification that hedonism is born.

It is through hedonism that the wrong path in life is picked and tread.

Sacrificing the long term for the short...is hedonism.

What I do not wish to be thought here is that...
somehow...
life must be boring...
that deferred gratification is somehow tortuous...
that it is about drudgery.

It is the opposite.

Deferred Gratification is about long term over the short...
it is all about much greater, and often, permanent gains...
for front loaded effort.

With this...
all of life is filled with anticipation...
and NO drudgery...
since all of the work had already been completed...
and all that is left is to look forward to the upcoming far greater rewards.

One of the greatest stories...
one which illustrates the ramifications of
deferred gratification vs hedonism...
one which ALL children should read is...

MUSASHI

(there exists many TV dramas and movies of Musashi).

So...
TV...Movies...Books...
are in fact...real life...
not so much as what is in the here and now...
but in that which shall be.

Those influences with which you align your heart...
are those which shall guide your heart.

Those which guide your heart...
shall be the driving force which guides your mind.

The plans which are formulated by your mind...
as influenced by your heart...
shall guide your actions in life.

Your actions in life...
determine the end point in your life...
the final result...
for better or for worse.
