Alex's Science Project I - 2013 - 2014 - A Proof Of Concept

Song:  Wild Child

Artist:  Enya

Alex's science project is now completed.
He is just now typing up the last portion of his Abstract...
and possible new directions for his proof of concept.

What his whole project involves is showing how a simple machine
may achieve semi perpetual motion...
and how a small amount of energy may be extracted from it...
without any external energy directly input into the system...
and how this may be achieved without violating
the two basic laws of physics governing such an enterprise.

(twisted thread holding the capillary 1 centimeter up from the end provided
the torque necessary to counter balance the remainder of the capillary...
which then allowed a fraction of a gram of water (.5 cm x 1mm)
beyond the point of balance to provide the reciprocal motion).

Simply put...

Alex's machine merely manipulates the molecular adhesion of water molecules
through the manipulation of materials used...
and of the total surface area in the extraction point.

While the actual molecular attraction of water molecules
to any particular substance is not changed...
the total amount of molecular attraction, due to a larger surface area, is increased...
thereby making automatic extraction of the water from the capillary possible...
and through proper tapering of the extraction point with proper materials...
gravity will provide enough force to pull the water to the original starting point...
and keep the extraction point from saturating...
and with a proper amount of torsion applied through twisted thread (fulcrum point)
to the capillary which then forces the capillary back to the vertical position
thereby allowing re-induction of water...
a perpetual cycle may be realized.

So...
with induction of water in a capillary being a naturally occurring phenomena...
and the extraction of water in a capillary being a naturally occurring phenomena...
and with the capillary being properly balanced...
where a full capillary will overbalance it...inducing motion...
and an empty capillary will under balance it...inducing motion...
all through the two fundamental forces of Electromagnitism and Gravity...
no direct input of energy is needed.

Alex's very simple machine utilizes two fundamental forces:

Electromagnetism -
in the form of Molecular Cohesion and Adhesion...
and as put into action through capillarity.

Gravity -
as acting upon a constantly changing mass of water
in a borosilicate 1mm x 100mm capillary...
causing an ever changing state of imbalance
in a properly balanced lever and fulcrum set up.

It all hinges upon the non-violation of two laws of physics...

Law of Conservation of Energy...
which states that the total amount of energy in an isolated system...
cannot increase or decrease (and so conserved)...
and that it may neither be created nor destroyed...
that it may only change forms.

 First Law of Thermodynamics...
which is a version of the Law of Conservation of Energy...
except applied to thermodynamic systems...
specifically applied in this case to any
perpetual machine of the first kind being impossible...
one which is thermodynamically isolated.

Alex's proof of concept semi perpetual motion machine
violates neither because it is not a truly isolated machine.

Although, through his experiments...
a very small amount of energy may be extracted from the system
without any form of direct energy input...
and at first glance it seems to violate the two above laws...
it does not because the heat of the sun on the earth
keeps the water used in his system from freezing
 (ambient temperature...no direct sun energy)...
the mass of the earth provides a continual pull of gravity...
and the electromagnetic force in the form of
molecular cohesion and adhesion provides the motive force of capillarity...
which when a disparity of molecular adhesive forces is created
at the induction point and extraction point of a capillary
through material manipulation...automatic movement of a mass of water
in a properly fulcrumed lever provides a continual cycle of motion...
and so, becomes a generator of potential kinetic energy
(again...the amount of work force produced is so small
as to not be a viable source of energy).

Again...
his project is a Proof of Concept...
not a means to a viable source of free energy
(as shown in his mathematical calculations of total force production).

Also...
his machine is NOT a true perpetual machine.

Even though it would be hermetically sealed...
mineral deposits would eventually seal the capillary...
friction on the tension thread would eventually cause fraying....etc.

However...
as a means of showing continual motion without the direct input of energy
into the system...while producing a very small surplus of energy...
it proves a concept of a simple machine producing more energy
than that which is directly input being possible while NOT violating
the laws of Physics.

Alex was successful because his goal was to provide the theoretical basis
for a simple machine being able to operate with a surplus of energy
without the direct input of energy by utilizing fundamental forces
(those of Electromagnitism and Gravity).

He was able to establish the theoretical possibility of his project through the
successful results of his three preliminary experiments.

The first dealt with the establishment of a viable height of water draw
up a capillary...one which may be exploited in terms of potential energy.

The second dealt with the viability of creating an extraction point which
would reliably extract water from the capillary without saturating.

The third dealt with the establishment of a structure which would be able to...
not only support a capillary in a free swinging and balanced position...
but provide enough torque to counter balance the capillary...
and to allow the extremely small force of a fraction of a gram of water to
upset the balance enough to cause full motion of the capillary.

The forces he dealt with are extremely small...
however, without further results...
just through the establishment of success in these three experiments...
he had established his goal.

I will be posting his report in two articles...
as he will be turning it in tomorrow.

He still must make his presentation board.

His first portion of his over 40 page report is his initial research report
(I combined many pages into each screen capture to keep it few in number).

His next section is his Hypothesis and Variables:

His next portion is of the Materials and Procedures:

This portion is of his Experimental Notes:

This portion is of his Experimental Results:

His third experiment demanded precision beyond that which could be engineered by him...
but had shown with finer precision...it could easily be done.

Alex's conclusion...
along with his mathematical force calculations and abstract...
I shall include in the next article.
