Development Of Common Sense III / 11 Pieces Of Wisdom From Bill Gates - Part 2

Song:  Dark World

Orchestra:  Distant Worlds

This is part 2 of 11 articles on Bill Gates' rules to school children.

Bill Gates'...

Rule # 2)  The world won't care about your self-esteem.  The world will expect you to
accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

My perspective:

Simply put...
Self-esteem is a thermometer...
NOT a thermostat.

You cannot change a thing by merely heating up a thermometer...
seeing the false resulting temperature reading rise...
and then claiming that the room is warm!

Pretending you are better than you are...
does not make you better!

It is simple cause and effect.

Self-esteem is a natural effect of true achievement (the cause).

You raise the temperature of a room by raising the thermostat...
this lights the fires of passion and commitment for action to achieve
(putting into effect a plan for actual positive change).

The thermometer (self-esteem) will then naturally show the true rise in temperature.

Just as in falsely raising a thermometer to indicate a warmer temperature
than it truly is in reality...which would then preclude any need for
the ignition of the furnace (that which would truly make a difference)...
so it is with the false raising of self-esteem.

A person should feel guilty...
 should feel situationally depressed...
 should feel embarrassed and ashamed...
 should feel emotional pain...
should they not do that which need be done...to achieve a goal.

People should only feel good about themselves...
if they had done something worthy of the good feelings.

Drive is the most important attribute in success.

To falsely assuage the pain of righteous shame...
to feel good about mediocrity...
is to never develop the necessary impetus to manifest true drive.

It is to take away that which makes us want to develop ourselves...
our vision...our passion...our motivation.

I am amazed that so many people do not see this.

As I always say to my son, Alex...

"The world does care about feelings...only about results".

Is the world somehow cold and unfeeling?

NO!

It is the natural reaction of the world to parasites...
the ones who only care about themselves...
about how they feel...
rather than what good they may effect.

To not put in the effort to make positive and noteworthy change...
to not accomplish anything...except to falsely feel good about yourself...
does yourself no good...and it certainly does the world no good.

What such a person is saying to the world...
through their actions and inactions (the true measure of a person)
is that the mere perception of feeling good is what is important...
not the actual products of innovation and effort.

Sound familiar?

It is the thought process of a drug addict.

What is most important to them...
is to falsely feel good.

The only drive they have...
is to feel good...at any expense.

Sure, I know...
many think that by falsely raising a person's self-esteem
(praising mediocrity - magically erasing earned shame)...
that somehow their performance will rise...
because THAT was holding them back.

It wasn't the fact that they hadn't put in the study time...
that they hadn't put in the effort to train...
that it is purely the power of Positive Thinking
which will magically transform them into a winner (obviously not).

Positive Thinking is only the portion which is supposed to
MOTIVATE a person to create a positive plan...
and then to put that positive plan into positive ACTION.

It is then the positive action...
in the necessary quantity and quality...
at the necessary rate...
and for the necessary duration...
which will be the CAUSE of the positive result.

To do otherwise is to shortcut the process...
to erase the root cause of motivation.

The manifestation of motivation is DRIVE...
without which...nothing gets done...
without which...no results will be forthcoming.
No true achievements... no rewards...
not internally...not externally.

The only reason I can assume to be the cause of the widespread faith
that mere unearned self-esteem is the necessary precursor to success...
I can only attribute to a two step process of delusion.

Step #1 -

First of all...
those who espouse this...
and those who believe this...
must have never had a true moment of a hard won achievement.

Had they had one...
they would have automatically known the great amount of effort
behind their success.

Step #2 -

These people not knowing the components resulting in a true victory...
see only one variable of true winners before
and after a contest or performance...
that of confidence (high self-esteem)...
which upon they falsely attribute to be the cause of the success.

They draw a false conclusion based upon
the mixing up of a mere correlation with actual causation.

They know nothing of how true confidence is made...
of how true victory is won in the training hall...long before the performance...
of how through long and rigorous training...
the person develops an expertise in his field or area of performance.

With this expertise...
he knows that an excellent performance is a foregone conclusion.

He will, therefore, have natural confidence...
a high level of self-esteem.

Again...the self-esteem is not the cause of his success...
it is the natural result of his countless hours of practice or study.
It is then the practice or study which is the cause of the success.

The only other possibility I can think of would be the scenario
where the parent of a child actually believes that merely feeling well...
no matter how false that is...
no matter how they are teaching their child to be an emotional drug addict...
how they are conditioning their child to chase short term pleasures
at the risk of never chasing the long term pleasures...
of how to think of all actions...or even inactions...as being equal...
and so that even mediocrity is to be praised...
that it is ok that they falsely define themselves to themselves...
that these temporary feelings are that which are all important...
somehow, in their child's life.

When such a child goes out into the world...
and faces the harsh reality of even a semi meritocracy...
where people must EARN their way...
this is where so many SHALL fail.

Is the world wrong for not automatically accepting everyone?

OF COURSE NOT!

So many people wish to be parasites...
to wish to commit larceny upon their neighbors
by living off of their efforts...instead of their own.

People must economically protect themselves...
and their families...from these parasites.

The world SHOULD expect people to not feel good about themselves
UNTIL they have accomplished something!

A person who has the desire to truly accomplish something...
has passion...a sense of mission...a sense of restlessness...a constant desire to achieve.

A person who feels good about himself with where he is...
has no desire to go further.

He has no desire to listen to reason...
no desire to observe true cause and effect...
no desire to improve a situation.

He is ok with mediocrity...
he just doesn't realize that the world is neither ok with it...
nor should it be.

It is only later...
when he realizes that his world is starting to crumble around him
due to a lack of true effort on his part to actively erect a solid structure
for his life to be built upon because he was raised with the
belief that his feelings came before actual performance...
when he sees the others who had performed...bypass him in life...
it is at this point when he starts to feel depressed.

So often when this should have spurred him into action...
to formulate a plan which could be transformed into true rewards...
this type of person merely looks to feeling well...
rather than doing well.

Although he is merely situationally depressed (as he should be)...
he will often seek to medicate...as he has always been an emotional addict.

So instead of correcting the root cause of his depression...
the lack of effort on his part in life...
he will seek to merely not feel bad about it...
until he has to take another pill...or another drink.

This, of course, is a never ending and self feeding cycle.
He will never improve because he has taken away
any motivation to improve.

This is not to say that all depression is a result of poor decisions.

There exists true clinical depression...
which is a result of an imbalance of neurotransmitters.

However...
they are by far...
in the minority of cases.

(and yes...I have seen the stats...and the methodology used to gather them...
and yes...America is being over medicated.  Not just in the use of antidepressants...
but in a whole lot of "diseases".  And no...it is not a vast conspiracy...
it is something far more insidious...that of complicity...from the producers...
to the dispensers of these highly profitable momentary escape capsules).

So...
in their minds...
they are not at fault...
it is a "disease"
(and so having nothing to change...they don't).

Will all such people become drug addicts?

NO

However, many shall at first fail...
where they should have at first...succeeded.

They will have been put into an unnecessarily disadvantageous position...
whereupon they will have lost...at the very least...valuable time.
And time is something which may never be made up...
merely the loss of which may be mitigated somewhat
through later extraordinary effort on their part.
