Alex's Weekly Long Bike Ride - Fallen Leaf Lake

Song:   All Of Them (King Arthur Soundtrack)

Artist:  Hans Zimmer

After Alex's daily studies...
we traveled a little over one hour to just beyond South Lake Tahoe...
to the trail head of Fallen Leaf Lake.

Although the ride was fairly level...
it was a longer ride than before...
and it had loose dirt, and larger rocks and sticks
for Alex to negotiate.

Alex had fallen a few times...
mostly due to the loose dirt spots and debris on the trail.

Alex had spun the handlebars during one spill.
It resulted in one of the brake cables coming out of a tensioner.

I took a few moments to re-emplace it...
and off we went.

We took a small deviation from the trail a little ways...
and we had come to an abandoned property
(perhaps it was someone's winter property).

The property overlooked Fallen Leaf Lake.
Someone had a piece of heaven here.

We went back to the trail and headed in a little farther...
and decided it was enough for one day.

We headed back along the same route.

The trail narrowed, and had loose sandy dirt...
which had caused Alex to fall once again.

(Momma took Alex's day pack after his last fall).

Alex getting ready to dismount for a small break before the last portion of the trail.

Alex resting near the minivan after the ride.
He drank some cool water from his thermos while I loaded up the bikes
(he looks tired...doesn't he :)

We went home...
showered...
and I then took Alex out to his favorite Mexican restaurant
(he loves the fried Tilapia).

I had a trailer hitch installed a few days ago...
into which this new bike holder directly fit
(this one holds 4 bikes...and is much more sturdy than the last).

I have been researching bike trails for us to ride...
a different one each week.

During our rides...
I am also scouting which ones will be the best Autumn routes.

In certain places...there are groves of Aspen trees.
They turn brilliant yellow in the fall.
We are looking forward to eventually riding through them
during the height of their colors.

We are going to extend the milage covered each week...
and we are also going to ride in varying terrain types for skill development.

Although Alex had fallen quite a few times on this day...
and he had a bit of a rough time negotiating the loose dirt, rocks...etc...
he still loves, and looks forward to, our rides.

Alex is learning each time we go out...
and so...he is enjoying them more each time.

  1. Your latest trail looks like it was a definite step up in difficulty. It's wonderful that Alex did not get discouraged from his rough moments, and wants to keep riding.

  2. My wife was worried that it was too difficult for him...however, Alex realized that it was a necessary step toward our preparation for Mammoth Mountain. He loves the outdoors and bike riding.
