Alex's First Time Skiing - Mt. Rose

Song:  Comptine D'un Autre Ete: L'apres Midi

Composer:  Yann Tiersen

I took Alex to Mt. Rose today
for his first day of skiing.

It is but a half hour drive from home...
and, as we can ski for 6 - 8 months out of the year near Reno...
we shall be skiing frequently in the future.

At first...
we stopped by a neighborhood ski equipment rental shop
to get Alex sized for ski boots and a helmet.

At first we went to Tahoe Meadows once again.

However...
I soon learned that the lack of a ski lift...
and proper instruction for Alex...
would not make for a fun day

(I often forget that Alex is a detailed progressive learner.
I am a generalized visual and kinesthetic learner...
so I must shift my thinking to accommodate his learning style...
although I also expose him to all learning/teaching styles
as he must also learn to adapt to the world).

So, we headed to Mt. Rose Ski area
(10 minutes back up the Highway).

I bought Alex a complete Ski Lesson and Lift package.

Mt. Rose Ski area is the perfect place for beginners.

They have multiple runs for beginners
and intermediate runs on this side of the mountain.
On the other side, they have the more advanced runs.

This shall be our skiing area for quite awhile.

They had multiple stations for each segment of the lessons.

Alex went from station to station and learned all that was necessary
to navigate his first bunny hill on skis.

The bunny hill had a type of moving sidewalk going to the top.

One of the instructors had given special attention to Alex
as he was initially having some difficulty mastering stopping and turning.

After a little while...
Alex went down the bunny hill with his instructor behind him.

She was guiding Alex through vocal commands...
telling him when to turn.

After a few runs with his instructor...
Alex asked to go solo.

Before the end of the day...
Alex was able to ski the whole run while making turns,,,
and not falling once.

Alex had more than a fun day.
It was filled with tremendous gross motor and balance practice.
Alex did very well for himself.

He is looking forward to skiing again.

Next week his 7th grade class is coming here for a day of fun.

I wanted to ensure that Alex had the basics so he could enjoy himself
with his classmates.

He may now just go straight to the bunny hill...
and perhaps...
he may do some beginner runs.

I am looking forward to skiing the mountain with Alex soon.

There is a particular run I want to get Alex skilled enough for.

It starts at the top...
goes to the saddle on the right...
then goes down part way on the other side of the mountain
(with direct views of Lake Tahoe)...
it then curves to the right around the right side of the mountain...
and back to this side.

It should prove to be a particularly long and scenic run.

After this...
there is Boreal...
Northstar...
Heavenly Valley...
among others
(ski resorts)..
all within a short drive from home.

Although I am rusty...
I am sure I will pick it right back up.

There are so many ski resorts all within 1/2 to 1 hour away from home...
there is no way I am going to miss out on all of the good times with my son.

Although it is also fun...
each outdoor activity strengthens Alex's motor coordination.

This summer it will be Mountain Biking.

We will be picking out some mountain bikes soon
(along with some fishing and hiking gear).

Alex just received this pin from AMC 8 (up to 8th grade).

Alex was the top score in his school
(and honor roll recipient for AMC 8).

With Alex doing so well academically...
it is up to me to ensure his motor skills are also thoroughly exercised.

So...
it is more of the great outdoors for us...
all in the name of learning of course  :)
(these are the shared experiences that fathers love to teach :)

  1. You found a good place to expose Alex to skiing. Looks like he got good instruction. I think it is important to develop a child physically and socially in addition to academically, so this is a great experience for Alex. And with so many great ski areas nearby, the two of you will have many nice ski outings together.

  2. He had learned quickly once he got personal attention. The female instructor was nice to him...and most importantly...he listened to her...and he applied what he was taught. After that...he had a great time. We are going back in a few days.
