Alex's New Year Math: Calculus

Song:  In The Mirror

Artist:  Yanni

Alex organizing himself using a white board calendar.
He writes down coming events and assignment due dates.

Alex uses three basic math on-line sites on a daily basis...

Alcumus - for a variety of math problems

Khan Academy - Differential Calculus

Thinkwell - Calculus

And during the school year...
he also goes on to a web site where he does Algebra problems for speed
and gets credit for his Algebra class.

He finished up Pre-Calculus last year...
and he is starting the new year with Calculus.

This is for his at home advanced studies.

He is taking Algebra and Geometry for review at school...
to keep him refreshed on the basics...
and he is taking two math competition classes...
one focuses on MathCounts...
the other focuses on AMC 10.

Alex finished up with Thinkwell's Calculus program.

Alex especially loves how Professor Edward Burger teaches.
He finds it fun and interesting.

Alex was excited to start this program...
he considers this to be a New Year's treat.

This year we will be stressing his independence much more.

When we go places...
I will have him take the lead more and more.

Later in the year...
I will get him involved in the planning of trips...
including routes, contingencies, packing lists, communications...
fuel and food stops, emergency planning...all set to a time scale.

Alex is developing into a very fine young man.

I have so many plans for the future.
There is so much for which I must prepare him.

With Alex's great attitude...
each lesson...both taught and learned...
is a great joy for us both.

  1. I've been having my son do the Thinkwell math -- 6th grade -- since last summer. For us, it usually takes a bit of prodding, or more, to get him to do it. But I am glad that he can get some extra math work in beyond what he does in school. It's hard to imagine Professor Berger teaching calculus!

  2. Alex says the Professor Berger makes learning math so much fun...and he breaks the material down to very easily understood chunks of information.

Kai is doing well to be doing advanced math at home. It will be of great benefit to him as time goes on. He will become very proud of his achievements in math in the higher grades.
