Concept Of A Right Of Passage

Song:  Illusions

Artist:  Thomas Bergersen

No...
I had not used the wrong word.

The very meaning of the term "Rite of Passage"...
is the opposite of that which I wish to convey.

I do not mean a ceremony GIVEN merely as a matter of chronology
under naturally occurring circumstances.

A "Right of Passage" is something that is EARNED through extraordinary effort.

It is something which may be timed to mark a period of life...
however, it must be an event which is the culmination of extended and directed effort
which results in an achievement which vastly extends the person's previous boundary
of comfort and safety (psychological)...
and which results in a fundamental change of the person for the better.

It often involves a great amount of discomfort or pain (physical)...
however, only as a result of the extended effort necessary to achieve the goal.

The pain is NOT the goal.
Any fool can subject himself to momentary pain...
something which may be endured for a relatively short amount of time...
and which involves nothing more than a passive role.

It is in the ACTIVE role of preparation for an event in which the person
must constantly strive to overcome the temptation to quit due to fear of...
extreme and extended physical discomfort or pain...
embarrassment or failure...etc...
that causes the person to invoke, and awaken, the greater person to be...from within.

This is what evokes the fundamental change of the person.

This is what opens the eyes of the pessimist...
to the expansive and extensive view of that of an optimist.

While a person may fool himself into thinking that something is beyond him...
and so, never has to try...never has to endure sustained effort...
once a person puts himself through a Right of Passage...
he will forever KNOW that he is the master of HIS universe.

He will forever know that he will be able to always improve himself...
and that he is limited by only his dreams... and time.

So long as a person can envision his goal...
and his path to it...
he can eventually achieve it.

It just becomes a matter of the amount of passion the person has...
in order to sustain his effort to achieve it.

So many people believe that the person they are at their present moment...
is the person they are stuck with.

So many people think they love themselves...
when they merely love their immediate comfort.
They falsely think that a lack of pain or discomfort in their lives
is somehow living well...and so...they will do anything to stay the same...
for fear of a negative change (they choose to merely exist).

So many people even think that a fundamental change in themselves is impossible.

Each experience in our lives changes us.

The more, and the greater, the experience...
the more, and the greater, the change.

What a Right of Passage does...
is to forever banish negativity as a thought pattern.

A person simply cannot argue with the hard evidence of having achieved something
in his life, as demonstrated through his conquering of his Right of Passage.

He will forever know that he can achieve his goals.
Just as importantly, through the process of correct prioritization
and planning for his Right of Passage...he will know that the same path which
had led him to successfully conquer his passage...
is the same for everything else in life.

I know many people in life will choose to not put themselves through a
Right of Passage.

However...
to deny yourself from an experience in life which will fundamentally change
you for the better...is to cheat yourself from truly experiencing life.

It is to never view the world from the top of the mountain...
for fear of the effort of the climb.

-----------------

We are each... a crab in a bucket (our circumstances).

We are each destined to, one day, die.

However, we have in our power, the ability to determine how well we live our lives...
how many times we climb out of that bucket to once again drink in the ocean of life.

We each may choose the location of our deaths.

We may choose to die free in the oceans...
or to allow ourselves to remain in the bucket...
to be eaten by fear or pessimism...
and eventually by situational depression.

There are four basic types of crabs in a bucket...

The passive...
the ones which merely sit at the bottom of the bucket...
happy to exist...to not extend effort to climb out...
to wait for the hand of death to reach out for them...
to accept the pot of their demise.

They dare not dream of the ocean...for fear of disappointment.

The parasites (selfish)...
the ones who think that it is smart to merely latch on to those climbing out...
to not expend their own effort...to not care that they are endangering...
or hampering, the upward journey of those of whom they cling to.
They are the ones who covet the efforts of others...
who eventually try to step on...and over...the ones who had carried
them to the top once the objective is near.
They lack gratitude, and instead, delude themselves into thinking
that they had achieved something themselves.

They do not realize that by doing so...
they are relegating themselves to a mere tide pool...
instead of exploring the ocean of self achievement.

(in human terms)
Their minds are constantly on themselves and on an immediate objective...
while losing sight of the goal.  They fail to realize that others eventually
see their pattern...and soon cast them out of their lives.  This type of person
must constantly move from one person to another...and eventually...
from one location to another...as their method of operation becomes apparent.

The evil (envious)...
the ones who falsely believe that to pull others down from their climb out...
will somehow enrich their lives...
that at least they won't be left behind in their misery.

They waste all of their time and effort...
plotting and scheming the downfall of others...
when they could have, instead, climbed out themselves.

Their minds are constantly on the progression of others...not on their progression.

The assertive...
the ones who continually climb out and scurry away back to the ocean...
the ones who are not afraid to pinch off the claws of the evil and of the parasites...
each of whom threaten their freedom to live life fully.

Their thoughts are continually on the ocean...
their goal...and their progression towards it.

There is an additional choice.

By choosing to extend yourself through a trial by fire...
a Right of Passage...

you may choose to be a King Crab...
one which roams the seas in search of the scallops of life...

or a Hermit Crab...
one which chooses safety and comfort over the full expanses of the ocean.
