Concepts Of Morality / Amorality / Immorality

Song:   Have You Heard / Voyager

Group:   Moody Blues

There are but three major groups of people:

The Moral:

Knowing the concepts of Right and Wrong...
Good and Evil...
and reflecting that knowledge
through their moral actions in the face of duty...
and through their moral inactions in the face of temptation.

The Amoral:

Having no care of Right or Wrong...
Good or Evil...
even thinking that none can exist...
that everything is subjective and relative...
therefore one action or thought is as valid as the next...
depending on the person's "perception" or "perspective"
(moral relativism - more on this in another article).

The Immoral:

Having an incorrect and destructive concept of Right...
with everything else being Wrong...
and with the Wrong open to derision or predation
(extreme egocentricity).

Now...
right away...you should have noticed two things.

-------------------

ONE...
the only one coupled to actions and/or inactions...
is that of Morality.

-------------------

It is simply not enough to think good thoughts.

To be moral...is to act morally.

There are numerous opportunities in life to...
protect the innocent from evil...
guide the ignorant from an incorrect path
(to educate...not to hound or bully)...
guide yourself from temptation
(long term good over short term diversions which would
sidetrack or derail you from your goals)...
show, through your way of life...your morals.

It is how truly a person walks his path
which is the determining factor in how moral he really is.

There may be some side tracking...
some diversions...
but he always gets back on track...
keeps his gaze to the mountain top...
and keeps walking...
while helping the TRULY needy along the way.

It is simply too easy for a person to say...
and not do...
especially when faced with great temptation to not do...
either to escape displeasure...
or to pursue pleasure.

For the other two groups...
just their thoughts are enough...
as they prime themselves for action for when the opportunity arises
(their whole way of life relies on opportunity...
either by fortune or as a creation of their own.
It is their fundamental plan that is Amoral or Immoral...
it is only circumstance which separates them from action).

The Amoral often operate through parasitism or opportunity.

The Immoral are predators.

Both of these need just to think and scheme.

When the time is right...the Amoral covets without a care.

The Immoral plots and lies in wait for his prey...
or actively hunts.

As a metaphor...
just think of each as one of these common creatures
(more from the fairy tale than reality).

The Moral -
the Ant.

He works and builds for the sake of the good
of himself and others of his group.
He willingly sacrifices himself for his family...
especially in times of survival.
He works tirelessly and unceasingly...
marching toward his goals.
He derives pleasure from his work...
and peace of mind from his forethought.

The Amoral -
the Grasshopper.

He derives his pleasures from the short term... at the expense of long term ones
(he has no deferred gratification).

He suffers no guilt because he thinks his way of life is just as valid as the ants' way.
He lives just for that day and makes no plans for the future.
While he won't readily steal from the ants...
should an ant drop a piece of grain...
it is his for the taking.

He sees himself as smart...
as he may just enjoy the day while the ants work and gather.

He knows in the back of his little head that when times get tough...
he may claim victim hood of the heavens (winter)...
and live off of the labors of others...because...
the world owes him a living
(he thinks it is his right to always be happy...no matter what).

The Immoral -
the Spider.

This especially heinous creature spins a web
( web of deceit / false pleasures / fear - in order to manipulate others )...
lies in wait for the unfortunate creature to become entangled...
only to suck him dry and dispose of him when through
(he demands loyalty...but gives none).

He will entangle and eat anything or anyone to satisfy his ever increasing
appetite for power and general lust.

The spider will also eat its own young if hungry...
because nothing in the world matters more than him...
and the satisfaction of his cravings.

--------------------

TWO...
I had not designated any of the common social groups
that people have grown so fond of giving so much importance to.

Religion is not the sole beneficiary of Morality.

Atheism does not mean Amoral
(it simply means NOT theist - as in atypical).

Homosexuals are not necessarily Amoral or Immoral.

----------

You need not be religious to be moral.

The categorization, structure, and the teaching of Morality
was in the realm of the Philosophers...
hundreds of years before any of the major religions came into being.

-----------

Claiming a religion doesn't necessarily guarantee morality
(especially to others...need I go into that one?!).

TRULY religious people do not attack others on religious grounds
(Theistically speaking...not locationally).

TRULY religious people strive to master themselves...
NOT OTHERS.

TRULY religious people live their religion...
ALL of it...not just the easy parts.

TRULY religious people know that prayer leads the mind to purity...
as a vehicle to pure ACTIONS...
NOT as an end to itself.

It does no good to anyone if you walk around thinking yourself pure...
yet you ignore the needy...
stand by as the innocent get victimized...
ignore the ignorant when with... a little sage advice...
a little kindness...you could make a positive difference in their lives.

Always remember...
any fool can lock himself away in a mountain retreat...
free from stress and other responsibilities...
and claim to be free from worldly desires.

That is an example of the mastering of his surroundings...
NOT of himself.

The advice is suspect until verified...
if his knowledge came ONLY from his
controlled environment.

Now...
had he lived most of his life as others had...
and upon reflection in a more stress free environment...
his revelations were put to prose...
well...that could be valid...
you know...
as in someone who retired and started writing...say...
a blog  :)

Sorry...I had to throw that one in  :)

---------

No...
real examples (not necessarily religious figures)
of people who lived their beliefs in the real world would be...

Socrates...
Aristotle...
Plato...
 Mother Theresa...
a minister who uses his time and the church's money to...
set up beneficial programs and activities for his community...
to feed the hungry...
provide real opportunities through job training...
employment of the needy to maintain the church and grounds...
sports and educational programs for the youth...etc.

Just a few examples of truly religious or moral people who lead, or have led, people
to a better life through examples of how they live their life...
not just through mindless spewing of meaningless words
(if they don't live it...as demonstrated through their actions...
it was meaningless to them...they are the spider in disguise...
they are attempting to ensnare you in their web of deceit...
using meaningful general words
in a different context (a false specific application)
to manipulate your actions to benefit them or their agenda.

Just as a quick example...
in general...
telling the truth is good.

A false specific application is when it would result in evil triumphing...
instead of the spirit of the rule having good triumphing.

Real life example:

Early to mid 1940s  - Poland / Germany

A family of Jewish people are hiding in the cellar of a sympathizer's house.

German troops designated to round them up...knock on the door...
asking if there are any Jewish people there.

Is it always right to tell the truth?

Of course not.

Not when to do so would result in evil actions against the innocent
(you lie your little fanny off...and do so proudly).

(In the realm of good people)
A general rule exists as a guide...
as a way to reach a goal in a way that is, and results in, good.

A golden rule is one to never be breached (extremely rare)...
as in...always strive for good over evil...
right over wrong.

The Golden Rule trumps the General Rule.
The spirit of the rule trumps the letter of the rule...always.

-----------

There are many very moral and very good religious people.

There are also many very moral and very good Atheists.

I am Atheist

(again...the A meaning simply not - as in atypical.
I simply don't believe in a theism...that is all.  A TRUE Atheist
is not against religion or religious people...just as a TRUE religious person
is not against nonbelievers or other religions ).

Does a mountain climber hate all other climbers who take a different route to the top?

No...of course not.

Although he will happily map his route for others to follow his particular path...
he is happy to share the views of the top with all...
even with those who don't climb.

I simply know that Good and Right simply should, and must, triumph
over Evil and Wrong...and that it simply doesn't matter WHY a person
strives to do so.

So long as their way of life is that of good and right...
that is what matters...period.

A man's mind is his own.
It is his actions or inactions which affect others
that can even be of possible concern to anyone else.

-------------

I am against Wrong and Evil.

Is Homosexuality inherently Wrong or Evil?

Of course not.

What IS Wrong is Hedonism and Obnoxious behavior.

Are all homosexuals hedonistic and/or obnoxious?

Of course not.

Are some?

Of course.

Are there heterosexuals who are also hedonistic and/or obnoxious?

Of course.

But aren't there Pedophiles in the homosexual community?

There are a lot of Pedophiles in the heterosexual community also.
They are of the Evil that exists everywhere.

TRUE homosexuals are not about sex any more than are heterosexuals.

It is about LOVE.

They are wired in the brain like the opposite sex...
and so...
are inherently attracted to the same sex.

You mean a homosexual can be Moral?

Of course.

Again...
Morals...or Moral behavior...
is not in the exclusive realm of any religion.

There are but these three major categories.

The Moral:

Anyone who operates out of...
Love...
who strives for all that is Good and Right...
is my brother or sister.

The Amoral:

Anyone who operates as a parasite or as an opportunist...
is someone who I try to educate...
but one whom I will cast off should they stubbornly refuse to change.

The Immoral:

Anyone who operates out of...
Evil...
is my mortal enemy.

  1. I like the ant/grasshopper/spider metaphor. You touched on some sensitive subjects today. As usual, you deal with them with reason, and you make a lot of sense.

  2. Thank you Yuji. I am not out to offend anyone. But, then again...as often throughout my life...many often were whenever I spoke on such topics. An open exchange of ideas is a key component to progress, whether it be for individuals or for nations. It is in the spirit of the (Greek) Forums...open and uncensured dialog... (which allows for an intellectual meritocracy of reason to reign over that of mere opinion)... that keeps ignorance at bay. The only way ignorance may stand a chance...is when an attack on reason itself is carried out...and believed...by the ignorant. Hopefully...reason, and just plain ole country common sense, will reign supreme when people read today's article.
