Hippocampal Growth Through Stimulation Of The Mind, Body, And Soul

Song:  Light

Original Composer:  Hans Zimmer

Performing Artist:   Vestard Shimkus

I have no formal training in any of the neurosciences.

I won't try to fool you into thinking I know more about something than I do.

I do, however, enjoy reading about the latest advancements in science through
the condensation of concepts as presented through various science news outlets
on the Internet.

One science news outlet I particularly enjoy reading on a regular basis is:

Science Daily

It is a "readers digest" of the latest advancements in science.
While it is relatively light reading, so far as news on science goes, it also points to
the source, as well as, at times, the virgin research, so further personal research
on the topic may be conducted on one's own.

The articles frequently cover the methodologies utilized...
to help validate the studies' claims.

As I only know certain concepts of this topic...
I can not go into specifics...I am unqualified to do so.

I have included links to articles on the function and importance of the Hippocampus...
and the importance of stimulation of the mind through exercise of the...
Intellect...
Body...
Emotions.

This article stresses the importance of parenting through...
pulling rather than pushing...
gently guiding rather than forcibly thrusting forth...
positive reinforcement rather than through negative reinforcement.

The linked articles provide the empirical evidence for what is intuitive in good parents...
and for what is later learned through the circumstantial evidence
of trial and error of new parents.

By being provided the evidence necessary to make rational decisions...
I hope to make it easier for new parents to logically infer better ways to
help their children grow in the most efficient and effective manner.

I have not included direct stimulation of the intellect... as this is well known.

The Function Of The Hippocampus

Who says good things cannot come from Blogs?  :)

Mom's Love Good For Child's Brain

While this is something that all good mothers and fathers know...
undeniable evidence shows that while a child may
turn out well under less than desirable circumstances...
he will not be able to reach his full potential
without full nurturing.

Through the physical...
the emotions are touched.

Through a nurturing environment...
a child learns to love another...
himself...
everything in life.

The world is seen as a place of warmth and beauty...
and so, he will seek to engage in life...
to explore, wonder, learn, and enjoy.

It should also be noted that chronic stress or neglect of a child...
shrinks the Hippocampus.

One of the functions of the Hippocampus is the regulation of the
autonomic functions which causes the reactions to stress.

The more stressed a child is...
the less he is able to handle it.

Chronic stress is a big no-no.

A child living in fear...
due to constant parental negative reinforcement...
is one controllable source of chronic stress.

As there is an almost infinite number of ways to do something wrong...
I say to merely concentrate on doing that which is right.

Provide a nurturing environment...
one filled with positive reinforcement...
and chronic stress will, automatically, not be part of it.

Children's Brain Development Linked To Physical Fitness

Exercise is more than to keep the body fit.

Through the physical...
the intellect is affected...
besides being psychologically healthful.

Musical Training Induces Functional Plasticity In Human Hippocampus

There is a reason momma wants her child to learn the piano.

For just the psychological aspect alone...
music, through the emotional and creative outlets it provides...
is stand alone worthy.

Now there is a reason to
not feel bad about paying for those lessons...
it also stimulates the brain.

Hippocampal Atrophy Related To Fluid Reasoning Decline In The Elderly

What is generally known about the body (mind included) is that...
with proper stimulation...
the body adapts to increasing workloads by becoming more efficient
at handling them...by creating more of the necessary components.

Conversely...a lack of stimulation leads to atrophy (barring diseases).

What may be inferred from this article...
is that by being mentally, physically...
and emotionally stimulated in life...
a steep decline in functioning may be averted.

Just another reason to have your child love what they do in life.

What a child loves doing...
becomes habit...
a way of life.

This article shows evidence of the need for a lifelong habit of learning...
through proper stimulation of the senses...
which greatly affects the mind.

If a child is not being positively stimulated...
Intellectually...
Physically...
Emotionally...
he is positively not reaching his potential.

  1. Interesting to see scientific evidence that supports some of the good parenting practices that just seemed to make good sense. For me, personally, I have been trying to work more on using positive reinforcement, so these are nice reminders of its value.

  2. Yes, we humans are emotional beings. That which feels right and good is what we generally respond well to. Positive reinforcement speaks to our emotional side, which provides the motivation for change.
