Development Of Common Sense

Song:  Now We Are Free

Artists:  Hans Zimmer with Lisa Gerrard

Alex's mother uses this book to have Alex practice his reasoning skills.

These concepts make up what what we commonly refer to as...
 Common Sense.

While you needn't formerly learn reasoning skills...
(there are many persons who naturally have common sense...
however...there are also so many who do not)...
as it is developed in many through everyday observations...
and by absorption through experience...
to learn it early allows a child to critically observe all around him
so he may be able to absorb a purer form of critical information...
allowing him to learn much more efficiently.

Many people are easily led astray by...
 politicians
(and their frequently manipulated statistics and false premises)...
advertisers...
false prophets of every sort...
because they don't look critically at the given information...
or the conspicuous lack of pertinent information
(which should be a red light)...
which allows them to be easily manipulated.

If there is any subject which is missing in many public school systems...
it is Critical Reasoning.

It is the core of efficient and effective thinking.

It teaches a person HOW to think...
instead of what to think.

Through critical reasoning...
a child may become wise beyond his years.

He will be able to see through the facades and false paths...
so often worn, and tread, by his peers in the teenage years.

He will be able to correctly reason a true path for his life early on...
while sidestepping the common pitfalls of youth...
such as gangs, drugs...
any number of hedonistic lifestyles...
as he will see them for what they are...
a negative spiral...
an ultimate dead end.

We, as human beings, needn't learn through direct experience.
It is the reason that we progress as a civilization.

Through the accumulation of knowledge...
and the efficient passing on of this knowledge...
we may learn...what would otherwise take many lifetimes to learn
through direct experience...lessons and fundamental truths from afar...
in both, place, and time.

What critical reasoning gives us...
is the ability to separate truth from fiction...
the important from the unimportant...
the context from the unnecessary details...
so our actions are guided by that which is objectively reasonable.

There is simply no better time to learn these concepts than while still young.

Certainly by Middle School...
preferably while still in Elementary School...
learning how to think...
how to reason...
is of critical importance to all children
as all of what they learn may then be placed correctly
in the logic tree of their minds.

This subject is also of importance for adults...
as we may carelessly slip into bad thinking habits.
And there are few things more embarrassing than having
your young child point out incorrect reasoning on your part.
Believe me...
I know  :)

(Every so often, Alex points out a fallacious argument of mine..
usually done in the heat of emotion...ahem  :)

  1. Interesting thoughts on public schools not teaching critical thinking... I don't remember ever being taught that at school. I think I have good common sense, but didn't really learn critical thinking skills until I informally learned from a few books I read on my own when I was a young adult. I agree that people would benefit to be taught much earlier.

  2. Yes, especially when one learns the various fallacies of logic...and how statistics are manipulated...you see more clearly the world around you...and more deeply into the games people play.
