Alex's First Day At The Coral Academy Of Science

Song:  Reborn

Artist:  Thomas Bergersen

At about 1:00 AM we had heard a large wind blowing and we looked out to see
a minor blizzard in progress.  This was to be Alex's first day of school and we
had to start extra early as the roads would be filled with snow and ice.

Our morning neighborhood view.

Driving down our street on our way to Alex's first day of school.

A normally 15 minute drive had turned into a 30 minute one.

It had taken us twice as long to get there on this morning.
I should have realized by the lack of footprints that something was amiss.

We had arrived only to find out that on snowy days...
school starts a couple of hours later...
so off we went back home to only return a short while later.

We, being natives of Central California...
had never experienced such changes in schedules due to weather.

Once we had returned...
we were given uniforms for Alex to wear...
and Alex was given a placement test.

A short while later...
one of the coordinators told us that Alex would be pulled from
his regular 6th grade class during their scheduled Math period...
and he would be going to the library...
where they have computers for student use...
and he would be doing High School Geometry on-line...
and he will be getting High School credit for it.

After that, he will continue to work his way up...
and his next step will most likely be either advanced Algebra or Pre-Calculus.

Although his 6th grade class is studying Pre-Algebra...
Alex finished that in the 3rd Grade.

He is also finished with Algebra 1 and 2.

We had been working with him at home on Geometry...
and he will now be able to get credit for it at school.

They will also make provisions for one of his Electives...
instead of Art...
they will allow him to use the computer to study...
The Art Of Problem Solving - Alcumus during school!

This will allow him to have more free time at home to study
his SAT prep, essay practice, and more Geometry and Alcumus
(after his homework, of course).

They also offer foreign language 4 times a week starting in the 6th grade.

Since there are only a few months left for this year...
he will enroll in Japanese for the 7th grade.

The various clubs (Math / Science...etc) meet for 1 hour extra after school.

We will be getting him in one, hopefully this year...
but as it is late in the school year...
perhaps starting next year.

After things settle down a bit...I will be enrolling him into a Judo dojo.

We will also continue our weight training schedule and a little bit of music practice.

We will use the weekends, and his school breaks, for field trips.

I must say...
the Coral Academy Of Science...
has been every bit as accommodating to Alex as I had hoped.

Hopefully, soon...
Alex will be able to start earning College credit in Math with
their Advanced Placement courses.

Alex also wants to enter their Math and Science clubs and competitions.

Alex at home after his first day.
He told us all about how comfortable he had felt there...
and how he thinks he will really enjoy it at the Academy.

"I love it"...
a quote from Alex.

He said a classmate had taken him around and had shown him where to go
and what to do.

Although Alex is Autistic...
he is still very social.

He loves being around other children
(so long as they are well behaved)...
and he likes the children at the Academy...
he likes the smaller class size (fewer students)...
and he said he really likes the teachers.

He said they had explained things efficiently.

Alex was especially interested in the student handbook.

In it, they list the rules and regulations
(he has always been fascinated with rules).

He seems very excited to be there.

We think that we were so fortunate to have gotten him in so quickly.

My wife is always prepared and organized.

She had all of the necessary files and paperwork copied and ready to submit
to any future school beforehand.

So, we were ready to take advantage of any opportunity that had arisen...
as this opportunity had arisen so fortuitously.

Now...
if only Alex, and I, could also learn to be more organized  :)

P.S. - We now park the van in our insulated garage.
No more de-icing or brushing off snow.
Californians....sheesh!  :)
