We have substituted the math portion using Thinkwell.

We have found it more to Alex's liking...
it explains the mathematical concepts better...
so far as Alex is concerned.

Thinkwell Algebra 2 - College Level
is now Alex's chief math program.

It is more advanced than his last Algebra 2 program as
this one incorporates some calculus as well.

For Math...
Thinkwell is the choice for Alex...as he seems to thrive with it.

All of the other main courses are from Plato.

Alex is doing so much better since we started homeschooling him.

He is much happier, and,  he is moving at a much faster pace.

Perfection is...
a worthy goal.

Perfection is...
attainable...

at least in one's discipline.

Although there is the possibility
of making occasional mistakes...

with constant practice...
the vast majority of that which is
diligently practiced can be performed
flawlessly.

It is only when people think that
perfection means to be perfect
in everything at all times
that it is incorrect.

To say that no one is perfect...
when one fails...
or especially before one has to perform...
is an excuse for oneself
to not have to strive for it...
as it is easier to say something is impossible to achieve
and so...
not have to put in herculean efforts...
to achieve.

A professional musician must perform flawlessly
time and again on stage.

They were able to reach perfection on those
practiced pieces...
time and again...
because of repetitiously...
and perfectly practicing their art.

In life
there are...
of course...
unknown and uncontrolled variables.

Through thorough practice of the basics...
the fundamentals...
one may then be able to handle
most problems without the need to think
as they become a natural reflex.

Without the need to start all problems anew...
as most problems will fall into the standards of the basics...
the brain can devote itself to the anomalies
with greater ease.

To get frustrated at the inability to perform
perfectly in one's chosen discipline
without appropriate amounts of
perfect practice
is wrong...
not the idea of perfection itself.

Start out slowly...
break down the basics into
easily digestible bites...

move on only when one gets 100% of the problems...
understand the fundamental concepts...
with pure repetition...
over time...

I say...

one cannot help but achieve...

Perfection...
(in one's discipline)

Home Schooling - Creative Writing - Alex's Blog

Greensleeves - Arlen Oleson
Instrument - Hammered Dulcimer

Alex has always loved to free write.
He has written many stories.
Just recently, he expressed interest in starting his own Blog.

This is a perfect free writing exercise for children.
They have to generate original content
and be able to gather their thoughts
to be concise.

He is new to this but he seems to have fun.

His Blog...
although not open to the general public...
is something I shall report on from time to time.

Blogging on Blogger is free.

Children will not only feel proud of their Blog...
they will strive to better themselves
as they will then have something worthy
to Blog about.

Blogging is a way...
for children to express themselves...
provide a motive for future actions...
help them structure their thoughts
in an acceptable format to others...
all the while...
being very fun and interesting to them...
a perfect hobby for
Home Schooled children.

Home Schooling: Importance Of Posture

Posture used to be stressed in elementary schools (long ago).

Posture is still stressed in dance, music, religious orders,
professionals of various disciplines and that of especially...
the Martial Arts.

It goes far beyond that which is pleasing to the eye.

When you align your bones...
allowing them to bear the weight
directly...
it allows the muscles to fully relax...
which allows the brain to more fully concentrate...
on more important issues...
than mere body alignment.

When your posture is bad...
besides the detrimental long term health
issues...
you are expending a tremendous amount of
needless energy just to hold yourself upright.

A lot of stress aches are a result of poor posture.

Try sitting upright on a chair...
without allowing your back to touch the chair backrest.

You should have a slight S curve...
in the lower back...
this is not only natural...
it is essential.

Try to completely balance yourself just on the bone structure.

When you hunch...
your muscles must continually contract to hold you upright.

When your bones are correctly aligned...
you feel all tension slip away...
and your mind becomes free to wander.

It allows a quicker and clearer
thought process.

Posture is so crucial to learning the intricate movements
of music...
that it is often the first thing taught.

Notice the Classical Piano player.

One should strive to sit as if at a piano.

Look around at those who complain of tiredness at the end
of their workday (without reason as in office workers)...
notice their posture.

Many think that they are emotionally or intellectually drained.
So many of them are actually physically drained from sitting all day
in a position of poor posture.

Their back muscles are constantly contracting...
the tension affects many other muscles...
they develop stress headaches...
a poor demeanor...
as a result of having self imposed stress.

They have a constant low grade general ache...
they feel sluggish and depleted...
depressed.

Good posture also allows deep full breaths as it allows
for full diaphragmical contraction and relaxation.

When you are hunched over...
there is simply not enough room for full breaths.

This leads to shallow breathing.

Full inhalation leads to full exahalation.

This also relaxes the body.

What is started early becomes a habit.

A habit of deep breathing...
leads to a clear mind...
a relaxed body...
and healthful conditions.

A habit of shallow breathing...
while not critical while young...
when one ages...
it sets the stage for pneumonia.

As the lower portions of the lungs...
don't get the benefit of full airation...
the moisture that stays and builds...
makes for a beneficial place for bacteria
to grow.

Have you noticed the posture of the various
religious orders' monks, priests and nuns?

It takes the mind off the self...
which allows it to think higher thoughts.

High collars are common among them...
as this essentially forces good posture.
It keeps the neck in an upright position...
which generally forces an upright body position.

Slouching would be uncomfortable...
that which is uncomfortable...
is generally avoided.

In general...
good posture inhibits...
extraneous physical stimuli...
from interfering with fine motor control...
and from higher thought.

When one is in an upright position...
one is primed and ready...
to receive new information...
process it quickly and far more accurately...
all without the tiredness of those with
lesser postures.

Notice the serene faces of those with good postures.

It is the result of a lack of unnecessary stress.

Notice Opera singers.

Their postures allow for full lung volume...
which allows for greater projection of their voices...
and for effortless sustaining of those notes.

Notice the postures of the serious...
the studious in schools.

Notice the postures of...
 Executives of major companies...
of Statesmen...
of Classical Musicians...
Opera Singers...

They had long ago...
learned the importance that posture plays.

While correct posture is not so easily gotten...
since many would have to break a
life long bad habit...
once achieved...
it becomes easy to keep
as it makes one feel and think better.

The key is to start early.

The learning of the Martial Arts...
and so many of the other arts...
such as Dance or many of the Musical Arts...
also stress correct posture.

Correct Posture should be effortless...
it is not the rigid contraction of muscles...
to keep oneself in position...
but rather a lack of.

Again...
it is all about correct bone alignment.

Balance oneself as one would a pencil on a fingertip.

When one has balance upon the bones...
all conscious tension is gone.

The Mind becomes free...
the Body becomes free...
the Spirit becomes free...

When you free yourself of yourself
through correct posture...

All become free to soar.

To know when and how to admit fault
and to correctly apologize for it...
is very important
for all to learn.

To acknowledge Fault is to take the first step
toward the rectifying of a derailed situation.

It, so importantly, frees others from suspicion
and builds trust among all involved.

So long as there is no pressing need to rectify the situation
immediately...
then, finding the person at fault (Virgin Guilt)
IS important...
as this is not only the person who needs to make amends...
but the identification of the problem...
is so often the first step to resolving it...
and to ensure its unlikelihood of re-occurrence.

Why the need to find the Guilty party?

One who is never held accountable...
who never has to bear the brunt
of fault...
becomes a tyrant.

There will always be people...
who because of their displeasure in their place in life...
will try to bring others down...
so as to not feel so low in comparison to them.

It is basic long term solving...
by tackling the short term battle.

Never sacrifice the long term for the short.

Now, the general statement below
does not apply when a situation needs immediate correction.

This is also a general rule....
not a golden one...
if in doing so...
you risk the long term...
take it up at another time.

IF..and ONLY IF, you are wrong...
you owe more than the utterances of apology.

You have drawn first blood.

You must expect them to be angry..
of course, in appropriate relation to the offense.

You allow that.

You correct the offense...
and, this is important...you pay back..with interest.

Do not apologize if you KNOW you are right
(be assertive...fight the good fight...the honorable one).

If someone tries to make you apologize
for something they had done...
they are seeking dominance...
should you cave in...
the short term effect may be one of
"peace"...
but the long term effect
is one of no self respect
and thereafter...
getting no respect from them.

It will increase to no end.

If you know you are right...
and can show the other person objectively
and convincingly
that they are wrong...

THEY are being stubborn.

They will seek to impose their will upon you...
knowing you will cave.

You will have sold your soul to the devil...
and you shall live your life in hell
so long as they are in your life.

Apologize correctly and you have the right to expect it in return.

With this, and only with this...
progress can be made.

Basic respect and fairness to all...
means you have a right to it also.

If more parents taught this....
can you imagine how people would relate to one another?

With fairness.

The guilty...
knowing they would be called on it...
would be far more careful in the first place.

Often times people spit out the mindless
and so often incorrectly applied...

Blame Game adage...

or the equally stupid...

"Let's agree to just disagree"

No accountability means no change for the future.

In an objective argument...
one where right and wrong can be established...
it is through mutual cowardice that both "agree to disagree".

It is in the allowing of the status quo...
that "unresolvable situations" breed
(which the incorrect party counts on in the first place)

Just place a big enough threat and everyone must back down...
because in their minds...to win...or at least to not lose...
is far more important than that which is...
  right.

For the person who is right...
to abdicate moral correctness
is to desert all those whom are dependent
upon the situation changing.

If even only
for the use of the argument
as a future reference in their defense.

It also demonstrates to those who seek to profit from wrong...
that they have a much better chance of getting away with it...
because no one is there to challenge them and their deception...greed...evil.

Now...
do not get caught up in perceived motives.

It is very difficult for one to know the true motives of another.

The truest method is over the long term....
their actions...or inactions...
tell what their true intent was.

Just worry about practical aspects of people.
Were their actions reasonable?
Would you have done it that way?
Would their actions lead to immoral results?
Would harm come from it?
Is there a better way?

Think practical aspects of actions or inactions.

Trying to divine motives is very inaccurate in many cases...
it cannot be relied on in any case.

We are talking actions and results....
cause and effect....
these are in the realm of the Objective...
not the Subjective.

If, through your actions or inactions...
regardless of motive....
you cause a loss to another...
you apologize.

Something so simple
as an inadvertent bump on the shoulder
of someone else...
needs just a simple...
turn of the head or body towards them...
(indicating effort on your part)
looking them in the eyes...
a slight nod of the head...
and the words...
"I'm sorry".

Something demanding greater amends...
the accidental destruction of another's property...
as an example...
the damaged property
should be more than merely replaced.

Look to always give more back than the
original loss.

Give them a free upgrade (ex).

You will have earned your forgiveness...
and so...
both can move on.

Some will not accept your appropriate apology...
frequently employing political strategies...
securing others' allegiance against you...
and by ignoring you.

It is good to review the situation in your mind...
it means you are a concerned person...you don't wish to offend.
However...
once you have established that you were not the person at fault
or that there was no miscommunication...
you know who was.

It is not your guilt
but theirs.

Should they not reply to you
you will have rid someone from your life
that shouldn't have been there in the first place.

To worry about something
not of your doing
is an unnecessary drain on you.

Many people who claim offense
have no right to feel offended in the first place.

Just because someone claims to have been offended
doesn't mean they truly were.

Certain people go around in life
trying to get people to owe them
(repay them / owe them allegiance over an imagined offense)...
some out of power...some are bullies
trying to use societal rules as a club...
many do it out of stupidity.

They lack imagination and critical thinking...
and so...
think all others do.

This is what I do:

 Determine guilty party

 If I am guilty...
I apologize and make it up with interest.

 If they were wrong...
I would expect the same in return as I would have done.

Should they not reply or apologize...
I would knock them down a notch or two (or off)
on my hierarchy of relationships mental checklist.

A person who strives for goodness

corrects wrong

he then becomes worthy of others.

Goodness attracts Goodness

With appropriate apologies
given and taken...

Life shall become richer

for all involved.

Alex on one of his computers studying Algebra II
through one of his Plato courses (he also does Thinkwell Math).

Alex automatically goes to his study station right after breakfast.

He is eager to initiate his studies for the day.

Although his subjects have a minimum time standard...
he is always free to extend each according to his desires.

He will frequently wish to work on a particular concept until
he completes the Mastery test (100%).

Just yesterday...
I was in another room and I had heard him jumping up and down
and singing a little song of victory.
He had just mastered a mathematical concept (mastery test)...
one that he had been working on for several hours.

Although the concept wasn't so difficult...
the steps were very labor intensive...
tedious...
one small misstep along the way...
the result would, of course...
be wrong.

In order to prevent massive frustration...
his mother checked his work in groups
(hence the smiley faces).

As he had wished to master that particular segment before doing
anything else...
he (as he frequently does on his own)...
voluntarily extended his math time until he finished the task.

He understands the concept of digression...
to leave a task undone...
unmastered...
not only leads to a half step back...
if left for the next day...
it leaves the mind unsettled.

He usually has some free time after his last study session...
before his Karate lessons.

He completed his Mastery Test with just 5 minutes to spare...
before we had to leave...
but he was so happy with himself...
he was giddy with glee.

He says he just loves improving...
he loves to see his progress...
(illustrates the value of daily reachable objectives)

He got a big hug from me and off we went...
he has the same attitude with his Karate training...
he loves to see his progress in everything.

Many times I am at another computer in the morning...
I hear him come down...
he gives me a big hug and goes to his table to eat and read...
(he likes to read as he eats).

He then goes to his study station and brings up his first lesson
for the day on his computer.

He will complete each lesson and move on to the next
without the need for us to prompt him.

His mother will walk over to him to check on his progress periodically...
 to conceptualize a difficult area...
or to praise him for his progress.

The house is always quiet.
When I listen to music in another room...
while on the computer...
I use headphones.

He has his own areas to lose himself
in his studies...
in peaceful surroundings.

He already knows...
that his early years...
shall set the tone
for the rest of his life.

He is...
in essence...
an intellectual warrior monk...
in training.

He loves solitude...
to be able to lose himself in books...
or studying new and exciting concepts
through the computer or DVDs.

Solitude
allows him to develop his imagination...
his hopes and dreams...
to help him to
discover who he is
and what is important to him
in life.

He enjoys playtime also...
but he also realizes that...
playtime is a dessert...
that it is something to treasure.

Something that is treasured...
is especially enjoyed...
savored...
made memorable...
not to be wasted with boredom...
but with full belly laughs with friends.

He knows the concept
and importance
of Quality...
in everything
in life.

His solitude...
a sacred time of study and reflection...
not only allows him to make steady improvements
in all of his subjects...
it is his baseline...
a constant
from which all of his other experiences are measured.

He doesn't need the ever higher levels
of stimuli to enjoy himself
(as do those who lead a hedonistic lifestyle).

With his base line set on the level
that one needs to be on to excel...
he will not only reach his goals
in an efficient manner...
all of the great simple pleasures in life
become self evident.

Too much...
way too much...
emphasis (in America)...
is put on socialization of the children...
(learning to relate to others)
through playtime at school...
even to the detriment of academics.

This, in my mind, is backwards.

It places, and emphasizes, the learning of
the nature of human relations
from the external to the internal.

I say that it should be from
the internal to the external...
that one should learn to relate with others.

It is through solitude
(combative sports - studies - music...etc. included)
that one learns about oneself...
about one's true nature...
and so...
about the true nature
of all human beings.

One learns to respect oneself...
and so...
learns to respect all others.

In groups...
one leads...
all of the others...
learn to follow.

In solitude...
all are masters of their destiny...
the chief engineers...
the Captains of their ships.

In solitude
there is complete freedom.

The freedom to discover
who you are...
whom you wish to be...
through rigorous training and studies.

It is only through ever expanding exploration
that one progresses in life.

The greater those experiences...
the greater the growth...
and so...
the greater the happiness...
one shall have.

To illustrate this concept...
through a very famous story from Japan...

Musashi...

a monk had initially captured and imprisoned Musashi...
as he had been a rogue youth...
and had just beaten a man to death...
had he been captured by the authorities...
he would have been executed.

The monk (Takuwan)
had locked him in an attic room for
three years
(after hanging him from a tree for a few days).

Musashi had no human contact...
as the monk told him that he was unfit
to be among humans so long as he acted inhumanely.

The monk gave him just the bare necessities...
with one exception...
he had given him copious amounts of books...
those were to be the building blocks of his later
great humanity.

Musashi had later gone on to accomplish
many great deeds.

It was through...

Solitude...

 his studies of great subjects...
of the accomplishments of great men before him...
and later...
through his solitary training of the sword
that he had learned
the true nature of himself...
that of the true nature of others...
what it meant to be a great human being...
about the true beauty of life...
as seen through the eyes of a completely changed man.

His further interactions with humans were ones of
Great Courage...
Great Love...
Great Honor.

The story also illustrated the lifestyle of one of his initial friends...

Matahachi...

who had rejected the honorable life...
and the solitude initially required...
to achieve it.

He went on to live a hedonistic way of life...
seeking popularity and shallow friendships...
eventually finding no true happiness...

wanting to instead...

find a quantity of small temporary diversions...
through drink, and other social pleasures...
to the detriment of his ultimate happiness.

He had sought happiness through others...
(from the outside to the inside)

Instead of seeking happiness through himself...
(from the inside to the outside)

Allow your child to be
a Musashi...
and not...
a Matahachi.

It is through your child's slaying of...
the great demons of...

Ignorance...
Self Doubt...
Self Indulgence...

through solitary training of the
Mind...
Body...
Spirit (Emotions)...
(Studies of Academics / Martial Arts / Music)

as his mainstay...
his constant...
his rock solid foundation...

he will learn to enjoy

Solitude

as he knows this is his path to ultimate
success and happiness.

He will greatly enjoy life...
as all of life's simple pleasures
shall take on
a magnified importance...
since they shall not be taken for granted.

Once he learns the concept of Quality over Quantity
(his goal would then become the Quantity of Quality)...

He will forever settle for nothing less.

This is the correct path to take in life.

The way in life to true happiness
lies in...

Training...

Mind...
Body...
Spirit (Emotions).

There are so many of our children throughout the world
that have been denied a more advanced education than
their age would indicate.

Some statistics indicate some 40% of Gifted Children are actually
underachievers.

As Gifted Children need a higher level of intellectual stimulation...
both in rate and in depth...
many shut down to keep frustration at manageable levels...
or to not stand out in front of their peers...
as they simply wish to fit in with the crowd.

Alex is a Young Scholar through the Davidson Institute.

His Mother had put forth a portfolio of I.Q. test...
performance and achievement results when he was in the 3rd grade.

He was accepted a short while later.

Through them...
we had acquired more information and contacts...
to be able to meet his further higher educational needs.

Through the above link...
further links giving valuable
information for the parents and educators...
of Gifted Children
shall be at hand.

The first step is in the identification of Gifted Children...
this is where we are failing so many of them.
Many are never identified.

The link also goes into various ways to guide the Gifted Child.

Of special note is the Educator's Guild.

Should you think your child is Gifted...
you may want to pass this link on to your child's teacher.

It helps the teacher better identify and help her students.

Listed on the site are some of the criteria for acceptance into the
Davidson Young Scholar Program.

Being identified as a Gifted Child will allow you to better guide
your child to achieving his maximum potential.

It has nothing to do with elitism.

It has everything to do with
opening doors of opportunity
and paths of exploration
to a better future.

The only reason we had taken Alex out of school to homeschool
was that...although they were very accommodating...
they were not able to keep up with his rate of learning
and to his level of understanding.

We had always home schooled Alex
after school each day...
however...
it got to the point of diminishing returns
as his time spent at school was time that
he could have spent on much more advanced courses.

Since Home Schooling Alex...
each day is spent on learning at his rate and level.

It all started with the identification of his level of Giftedness.

There is a large amount of information available...
it takes but a few moments to start your search....
but provides a lifetime of happiness to you and your child.

While this particular link is guided towards the
  identification and advancement
of Gifted Children...

many of my other articles apply to all children.

I think that most children can be far more advanced
than their level in school...
just through proper parental guidance
throughout their lives...
as previously discussed in my earlier articles.

My Wife...

Alex's Chief Instructor...

a woman of great maternal instinct...
the key to his greatly accelerated intellectual levels...
initiated his path to a better future
through her constant vigilance of his

Health and Safety...
Intellectual and Emotional rate of learning...

by thoroughly researching all of the available
information on each topic...

consistently applying what she had learned...
by dedicating herself to her young cub...

his growth and happiness coming
first and foremost...
 which led to her guiding
 Alex
to ever growing levels...

without regret...
without fail.

It was the deep love of her child
that had given her
her resulting drive...
her perseverance...
her patience...
to utilize applied intelligence
to find that efficient path
to true learning.

For her

her cub...
our son

Alex

is the most important being on the planet
and so...
she naturally does
that which is needed
to ensure his ultimate happiness
in life.

There is no task...
no amount of frustration
too large.

She is the

Tigress...

willing to sacrifice anything
for her cubs.

She is a true

Internal Warrior

For the Mothers out there...

through your research...

Martial Arts - Simplicity In Mind / Body / Soul (Emotions)

Heaven and Hell (Theme from Cosmos) - Vangelis

Martial Arts teaches...
basic body mechanics...
emotional control...
and indomitable will...
through simplicity in...
motion...
thought...
and spirit (emotions).

Once a basic movement is taught...
it then becomes a matter of
decreasing unnecessary
tension and thought...
which leads to
a state of simplicity.

As the training becomes more rigorous...
it becomes a study in mind, body, and emotional control.

When it reaches this point...
it becomes meditation in motion.

The immediate effects of the physical training...
so long as it is vigorous enough...
is a thorough
Skill / Stamina / Endurance
workout.

The body sweats profusely...
tension in the body is released...
along with the natural endorphins...
leading to a state of euphoria which can last for days.

This alone...
causes people to return to training...
as the greatly positive effects on the body...
the greatly increased blood flow
to every part of the body and brain...
greatly stimulates and enhances
our experiences in life.

Fat is metabolized...
blood sugar is kept in efficient balance...
energy becomes boundless...
optimism is a natural result.

As the student progresses...
he starts to realize the need to move and think efficiently
in order to keep up with the ever increasing demands of his training.

Through Martial Arts...
they will get to know themselves.

Martial Arts revolve around respect.
  Start them early in life.
It will steer them on to an inner journey...
one that shall keep them on a moral and correct life.

It is through that journey
that they will learn so much about themselves...
and so...others.

We are so similar (humans) in so many respects.
That is why the more you know about yourself...
the more you know of others....the basic drives.

They shall learn to love life through their training...
if they are in a VERY vigorous Dojo (training hall).

They should leave each training day...
half dead from fatigue...but thoroughly cleansed...
in mind and body.

They shall learn to deal with extreme fatigue and fear.

They shall learn to negate their own inner demons
that scream out to quit or to just glide through life.

 In persevering...
they shall learn the most important lesson....
to never quit.

Most people have a lower threshold of pain...fatigue...energy.
They shall learn to extend those to levels
that most never achieve outside of higher levels of sports.

They will...upon recovery...emerge not only stronger...
but relaxed....
many of their anxieties will go by the wayside.

They will have gone through so much in their training
as to give them a sense of awareness....and control.

They shall be able to conquer many of the neurological problems
so prevalent in spectrum children.

They shall be able to gain such a sense of achievement...
inner calm...focus...optimism
(much of life won't be so difficult as their training...
as they will have already conquered that in their training...
life will seem to be a breeze...and so, enjoyable).

They will then be able to enjoy the true beauty all around them.

Although one doesn't talk much in training...
one still feels a sense of camaraderie with the others there
since they are partaking the same journey.

Through deadly serious training...
they will meet some great people.

Through diligence...
they will EARN their respect...
and their own self respect.

They will meet others who share a passion the same as theirs.

It is these people of similar passions
who can become the best friends they will ever have.

They could eventually get to the level of being able to guide others.

  They will learn self mastery.

Their goal is to be able to handle any situation in life that occurs...
with a calm heart and mind.

They will learn so much in life
through their training
that they will look forward to everything in it.

They will simply learn to love life.

It starts with simply going and doing.

They will learn to never quit.

They may progress slowly...
they will feel...at times...extreme pain...fear...fatigue...
and they will learn to welcome it...as this is what forces growth.

They will have the self knowledge that will make them feel a titan among mere mortals...
as they shall come to know that most in life...
never experience what they shall have gone through.

A Martial Art
becomes a true art
when one progresses to the point
of simplicity in...
 motion...
thought...
and emotions.

When one lives it...
that is when the soul becomes beautiful...
as it sees everything around it...
and life itself...
as beautiful.
