Concept 1 Of 6 - The Basic Philosophy Of Alex's Home Schooling

Song:  Distant Dreams

Group:  West One Music

In the home schooling of Alex, we have 6 basic tenets...
basic concepts which we have always known to be true...
and have realized to be effective in the guidance of Alex throughout his life
through our usage of them...
and most importantly...
by the results achieved through them.

As I know the great importance each plays in the progress of a child
in his home schooling...
I shall cover each concept as an individual article.

While individual parents may find their own paths to the achievement of the objectives...
the objectives remain the same.

I am merely pointing to the mountains to climb...
the individual paths to the tops... are yours.

Our first tenet:

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT / DEFERRED GRATIFICATION

The key to steady, and most importantly...
to self driven progress...
is having instilled a passion for learning...
which feeds the drive...
the insatiable desire to move forever forward...
onward...and upward.

For a more detailed article on each concept:

Positive Reinforcement - Positive Spiral

The Importance Of Deferred Gratification

Of the two basic drives in all sentient beings...

The Pursuit Of Pleasure...
The Aversion To Pain...

the Pursuit Of Pleasure is the most powerful and most desirable
to stimulate to effect positive change or for the encouragement of
desirable behavior.

What we have always used as the mainstay of drive building in Alex
is the use of Positive Reinforcement as a method of guiding positive behavior.
As a result, he has an inner desire to wish to do well.  While we greatly praised
his achievements and meritorious conduct, we were careful to not praise mediocre
performance, but rather had guided him to do better and then had given him
the great praise that he had earned
(it must be noted that the great praise is above and beyond our already constant
and great love and affection that we bestow upon him).

By having praise earned through merit, especially after prolonged effort...
he has learned the value of Deferred Gratification.

He knows the feeling of true victory through accumulated effort through...
 not only his academic efforts...
but through his physical and musical training.
He loves to see progress through his long term efforts.
This gives him his passion to learn, and so, his drive to succeed.

This was our main goal.

Through the use of Positive Reinforcement and Deferred Gratification...
although he may have...
 Distant Dreams...
with time...
they are a forgone conclusion.
