Home Schooling - Fantasy Is Reality / News Is, Too Often, Fantasy

Song:  Nights In White Satin

Oh...now you have gone too far, Shiroi!

You had just spoken about Subjectivity in the realm of Objectivity.

Just prior to that, you had spoken of the nonsensical world of Wonderland.

You now say that what isn't... is...
and what is... isn't.

Will you also say that up is down...
right is left...
and backward is forward?

What is this heresy!

-------

Please...bear with me.

Just stay with me on this.

I will not only explain what I mean...
I will explain the practical application of it with your children.

Fantasy speaks of the human condition.

It illustrates the heights of morals...of all that is good and right.
It illustrates the depths of depravity...of all that is evil and wrong.
It illustrates the battle between the two and of the ultimate conquering of evil by good.

It speaks of the purity and sanctity of true...

Love...
Friendship...
Virtue...

and of the willingness to make a necessary sacrifice for the preservation
of those who are good and innocent, even in the face of daunting odds
and almost certain death...
thereby giving true meaning to the words...
Courage and Honor.

It is merely in the setting of a fantasy world and through fictional characters.
What it speaks of is not only what is...but more importantly...what should be.

It has a wide following because of the similar chord it strikes in each of our hearts.
It is a reinforcer of the moral codes for which each of us yearns.

The news, in general, speaks not of the norm...
but of the anomalies.

It is, in fact, by design...
made to titillate our emotions...
our sense of the macabre...
our sense of moral outrage at injustice.

Not to say that the intent is necessarily evil.

The news media is a business.
Their business is to make money...
by whatever means
(not that it is a justification).

Long past is the time of major media being the watchdog of the people...
of true independent and in-depth investigative reporting.

It is titillating precisely because it is on the fringe.
It tells of things that, for most of us, is strange or foreign.
We read of actions, of the few, that defy our comprehension.

For us...it is a fantasy world whence monsters roam.

This is not to say that the events that are depicted had not...
in fact, happened.

It is to say that for the most part...
as for much of what we read...
for those actions to have been done by those people...
they had to have not seen things in a clear light.
Their perception of the situation was faulty...
not what had truly existed at the time
(not necessarily due to insanity...merely of them not looking
at the situation and thinking it through).

Their world was based, not on fact...
but of their false perception of it...
and so, their reaction to a falsely constructed
scenario in their minds was based upon a self made lie.

Their resulting actions reflected, not reality, but a fantasy.

Having your young child see or read the news in its entirety...
would also give him a false picture of the world about him.

A child will see a disproportionate number of heinous acts
to the number of good covered, giving a ratio that does not reflect reality.

This will give him the false impression
that great evil exists in the same proportion in the world as that which is covered.

By giving your child positive examples of morals and of their positive results...
a schematic will have been lain before him.

While some may feel comics and video games are a waste of time...
it is not necessarily so...
only when done to excess.

Should you not have read my articles on using video games, movies, and books
to help teach deep morals...
please...

When I speak of great morals as being a reality...
always remember that it doesn't necessarily mean at that time.

For that which you unrelentingly strive...
is that which you shall eventually achieve.

Reality is what you make it to be
through your applied intelligence and efforts.

  1. Interesting take on the news. I had always thought that kids should be knowledeable about the world around them, and to know current events. But you are right that so much of tv news these days is sensationalistic, and can give such a distorted picture of the world.

  2. It is ok to have them know current events...just from a child friendly source. An excellent site for the latest events in the sciences is science daily. There are child friendly sites for news such as DOGO news.
