Home Schooling - Theatrical Reading Of A Classic - Musashi

Song:  Ritual Of Sacred Fire

Artist:  Himekami

This Novel
(almost 1000 pages of small print)
is, in my mind...
one of the world's great classics.

I had written a book review on it here:

I had first read Musashi while in College.

This is the first night of my Theatrical Reading of Musashi
to my son, Alex.

I say theatrical because I am imparting
not only the words of the book...
but the feeling...
the very soul of the story through...
verbal, as well as, body and facial english.

Through the use of vocal and body modulation...
the inflections, flourishes and tones combine
to make the story come alive in his mind.

Of course...
it is parental bedtime story telling 101.

(The sunburn is from my taking Alex swimming)

It is a visual, as well as an audible presentation...
an expression of mind and body
which is meant to be throughly engaging
to both the reader...and the story teller.

We shall be reading one chapter a night.

At the conclusion of the chapter...
I then have him give me a synopsis
of what had transpired in the chapter...
the reasons why...what he would have done...
the basic morality or immorality of the actions...
what he thinks will happen and why.

In a few nights...
after having given him an example of theatrical reading...
I shall have him read the story to me.

On extended direct dialog between characters...
we may take the opposing or complimentary characters...
each fulfilling the passion of the unfolding story.

Although it will be harder for him to know
where to place the emphasis, as he does not yet know the story...
once he picks up on the character's traits and actions...
he will be able to read into the character's mind.

With this...he will be able to predict outcomes and attitudes...
and so, intuitively know how to express the characters.

Theatrical Reading teaches so many things on so many levels.

Besides the obvious ancillary effects of the reading, creative expression
and critical review process...
it is the practice of, what I call, soul reading...
the ability to not only empathize with another...
but to be able to correctly discern how another feels
about others and why.

People on the Spectrum...
often have a deficit in the intuitive empathetic skill area...
 commonly referred to as...
Theory of Mind.

I think that which does not come naturally...
may be acquired through repetition...
until it becomes intuitive.

The mind is plastic...
it rewires itself when properly and repetitiously stimulated.

When people, due to brain injury...
lose some previously inherent skill...
whether it be physical or cognitive...
can, and frequently do, rewire their brain...
through repetition, to once again...
regain the lost function.

Even were that not true...
for the great ancillary benefits alone...
Theatrical Reading is a great way to stimulate
the child's reading habits.

It also becomes a valuable component of "Quality Time".

In the giving of your child your undivided attention...
your focusing on his every word...
every physical flourish...
he is, in effect, on stage...
performing his heart out...
for you...
his throughly appreciative audience.

His connection to his love of...
reading...
the creative process...
his audience (you)...
is greatly strengthened...
chapter by chapter.

  1. Thank you. It will take a long time...but it will be worth it.
