The Davidson Academy Of Nevada
Premier School in the USA for Profoundly Gifted Children
What does this Academy do that allows greatly accelerated learning?
How does it challenge the best and brightest?
Most importantly...
how can these principles apply
to you teaching your children?
The three most important in my mind:
______
Allow children to accelerate by subject.
______
Some children have an exceptional
drive for a particular subject.
A child grows at an accelerated pace by
allowing his drives to carry him forward...
unhindered.
His weaker areas can be worked on without
sacrificing his upward growth.
______
Group students by ability, not by age.
(Meritocracy)
______
While I think all schools should operate on this principle...
it simply won't happen until people
get their priorities straight.
With Home Schooling...
a parent does not have to wait
for society to catch on to what is the most
efficient and effective mode of operation.
All children in the public school system
would learn at a much greater rate...
with a much greater thirst for learning...
without nearly the frustration...
and with far...far fewer dropouts
if they would just adhere to these principles.
I must say this again:
Plato learning online
in blocks from...
K - 6th
and
6th - 12th
all subjects...24/7 access
Accredited for home schooling.
Many gifted students use this
as their primary learning source.
Some as an adjunct to regular school
to allow them to work far ahead of their peers.
Alex has been using Plato for all of his subjects
except math...
we use Thinkwell...
as he likes it more.
Please note that I have not included links to these
as I want to assure you that I have no ulterior
motive for listing these particular courses.
_____
(My Principle)
The third...
the most important...
100%
_____
In addition to the above principles...
as a Home Schooler...
you may operate at the 100% level.
Should the child miss some of his problems...
simply explain the concepts...
have him go over similar problems
until he has a complete grasp of the problems.
Just as an azimuth may only be one degree off initially...
many miles away can mean being off target by
an unrecoverable amount.
Missing a problem can mean not having fully grasped
an important principle...
which would lead to unrecoverable mistakes
much later on.
Nothing gives a child supreme confidence
in his area of study like
100% understanding.
With Home Schooling...
this can be your normal mode of operation.
As concept builds upon concept...
a rock solid foundation is essential...
if his skyscraper of knowledge
is to reach the sky.
Our immediate primary objective
is for Alex to qualify for...
and achieve entrance to...
the Davidson Academy.
While he has met many of the qualifications already...
we must still meet some very stringent requirements.
We are...and have been... in preparation mode.
You know how the old saying goes...
shoot for the stars...
should you fail...
you shall, at least, hit the moon.
We actually visited the Academy last year for a few days.
Alex has a solid shot at making it...
but should he not...
we have many contingency plans on stand-by.
I am officially retired now.
We shall remain liquid in our capability
to relocate...
anywhere in the world...
to give Alex the best school...
one that allows for unlimited upward growth.
In the meantime...
it is Home Schooling...
and S.A.T. preparation.
We are now on the launch pad...
our rocket is fueling...
the launch window is approaching...
countdown is imminent.

I did not know that a school like Davidson even existed. Their principles make a lot of sense. It is a shame that more schools do not operate that way. I hope your son makes it there, though it sounds like he will do well regardless.
ReplyDeleteThe third principle (100%) is my principle...and the Davidson Institute uses more than the first two listed...but I thought them the most significant. Thank you for your comment...we shall continue to strive.
