Home Schooling - Graphic Organizers For Reading Comprehension

Song:  Thigh Chi
Artists:  Steven Halpern and Paul Horn

Reading Comprehension is the goal of reading.

The text is the medium to convey meaning...
the context...the concepts.

To be able to recite verbatim is meaningless
without the understanding of the whole
of what was written.

Not just what was expressed...
but what was implied.

Not just by what was written...
but by what was not written.

The goal of text is to not only
understand what was said...
but what it applies to
 in the here and now...
the past, and the future.

It should raise questions in the mind...
not only of what...
but who...when..why...where...how.

To give the child graphic representations
of a thought process that will later
become intuitive...automatic...
is the objective here...
with these basic
Graphic Organizers.

Each is printable...
each can be used to help children
understand the way to organize their thoughts
in order to best see comparative relationships
by ratios...chronology...cause and effect...etc.

Some examples:

They will allow the child to gather his thoughts
in a logical fashion.

The effect will be a more rational layout
of understanding for them, and their resulting
output in their reports or papers.

These are very basic exercises...
often used in the early grades of Elementary School.

They are especially valuable for Spectrum Children.

FREE GRAPHIC LEARNING CHARTS

 T-Chart...

and for establishing rough ratios.

 Main Idea Chart...

from essays or articles.

Character Traits Chart...
Improves Critical Reading skills...
useful in helping pick out descriptive text
and the supporting text for each character.

Sequencing Chart...
another way to help with Chronology.

Cause and Effect Chart...
useful in not only seeing relationships
between the two in text...
it is especially useful in helping the child in the
organization and the conditioning of the mind
to see such relationships in everything in life.

It is the core of Critical Reasoning...
and...
the beginning of thinking in a
scientific manner.

My wife had used these early in Alex's development
to ensure his true understanding of...not only what the author had
wanted to get across...but of other questions the article may have raised...
or should have been raised were it to have been a complete article.
