Home Schooling - Life Is Not A Series Of Multiple Choice Questions

Multiple choice questions on tests in school came about, not because of the patterns of thoughts that they engender,  thereby making the participants more efficient and effective problem solvers.  They were not made to reflect real life.  In real life...we will usually be handed a broken system and told to fix it...or even a good system, which we are then told to ensure never breaks.  Real life, so often, involves finding out the answer without possible solutions presenting themselves for use as a deductive crutch.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS EXIST FOR THE CONVENIENCE OF THE TEACHERS...OR FOR EASE OF THE SYSTEM.

It is so endemic in our system...so prevalent...that it is used in most types of testing.  It invaded our school system in the early 1970s or so...with the advent of the SCANTRON.

Without the possible answers narrowed down to a few (usually 4-5) from the outset...the student will have to know the answer cold...not merely generalizing...estimating close enough to exclude all others...COLD...STONE COLD.

The Plato Learning System uses direct answer input.  Not multiple choice. Just as in real life.

If you are a home schooler...although some of the multiple choice tests are unavoidable...when possible, use the direct answer or essay format.  They are far superior to the learning process...as they truly reflect questions posed in life.
